Who ⬤ The clinic crew and perhaps you!
What ⬤ A open mingle log for all needs
When ⬤ September and onwards
Where ⬤ Between Sutoku and Enma territories
Content Warnings ⬤ Possible discussion of medical procedures, others in headers if needed
Open from eight AM to eight PM, this Lost Soul-maintained clinic has been quietly offering assistance to those in need for the past several months. To those in the know, the red cross sign in the window is a beacon for people who need a professional's eye and who for one reason or another - financial, skeptical, etc. - would prefer the intimacy of a private facility. To those not, the whispers are enough to point you in the right direction, the general agreement to not shout about it and keep it under the radar, for affordable and easily accessed healthcare is worth its own weight in gold
Patients are primarily checked in at the front, and either seen by a doctor or one of the assistants. Everything from basic checkups to immediate care is available, as well as compounded medicine for those with particular ailments. To things that just can't be handled in the private space, the staff will see to the proper referrals. Walk ins are always available - even emergencies, just call the number on the sign with the hours.
For staff and volunteers, there's always something to do. Paperwork, attending to patients, taking turns on the front desk, supply transport and acquisition - there's always an assignment for the day, and a schedule written up to be followed on the local chalkboard. Yes, the space below can be for whatever doodles you want, or just writing in when you'll next need time off. The break room contains one Nice radio, courtesy of a certain audiophile, and whether one is following the intricacies of oni baseball or new tunes, it's treated with respect. The calendar pinned to the wall contains everyone's noted down birthdays as per their hiring sheets, and there is now debate on starting a book club, given the inclination of most working there.
The second floor of the clinic is not yet finished, but Dr. Dyer has plans for it, and it's being worked on during slower shifts. Cleaning, painting, and basic repair is to be expected, as well as getting it ready to include a few more beds for when overnight patients are needed. Out the back door, however, is the most popular place to take a break amongst those working - the herbal garden filled with medicinal plants, steadily maintained along the other tasks at hand. A pair of small benches offers a place to rest one's feet, and the scene of tranquility is complete with the sound of the recently installed fountain - the water within also has healing properties, and is used in treatments. But one doesn't need to be ill to appreciate a calming scene.
The city keeps them busy enough, and the clinic so far manages to persevere, putting down small roots in Hell.
(this is a mingle log for everyone who comes through the clinic through the month of september and onwards. all top levels are welcome, from those already involved to new patients to those curious about the workings. talk to your friends, get someone to look at you bleeding your own blood, help with whatever you like - the sky is yours.
if you have any questions, pm me, otherwise enjoy!) © tessisamess

yujin mikotoba | sutoku | ota
[Truthfully, most of his experience lies in the theoretical-- and in the post-mortem-- but taking on the role of Dr. Mikotoba and returning to a medical setting has been a great comfort in all the strangeness of Hell. Mikotoba's now a regular around these parts, and when he isn't bustling about seeing his patients, he can be found all over the clinic:
A) When he's got a few spare minutes, Mikotoba's frequently found
dad stancingstretching his legs and listening to the radio in the clinic's break room, intently focused on whatever sport or news programming is on the waves today.B) He's also usually the one brewing another pot of coffee or boiling a bit of extra water in the kitchen; any staff looking a bit more run-down than usual will get a mug gently, but insistently, pressed into their hands before Yujin pours himself a cup of tea, too:] How are you today? [he asks, with a gentle and attentive smile.
C) And, on occasion-- on the most difficult shifts, really-- he retreats to the garden for a few moments of peace and quiet. Nearly always, he takes the bench beside a patch of brilliantly violet Japanese irisies, contemplating the blooms in pensive silence.]
2. the doctor will see you now;
[But it's not all fun and games, either. A patient-- particularly one with an unusual ailment-- might be seen by a middle-aged doctor with a streak of gray and a reassuring grin. Mikotoba takes a seat on a stool across from them in their room, and, glancing up from his clipboard, asks--]
Good afternoon. I'm Dr. Mikotoba. What is it that brings you here today?
3. the doctor will see you now (derogatory);
[Are you a Shuten or Shuten-adjacent dumbass who got their ass kicked in a fight nearby the clinic?! DON'T THINK DR. DAD MISSED THAT SHIT: you, an idiot, now are being shuttled through the clinic doors by Mikotoba and a youkai assistant. Whether he's trying to stem the bleeding on a fresh wound or setting something very broken, Mikotoba is calm, but firm, as he issues instructions to other staff members. Evidently, this is not his first rodeo.
Whether or not his patient has cooperated, he poses a stern question once everything's stabilized:] What on Earth happened out there?

[Godot does make his 1:00 Friday appointment, if only not to have wasted Dr. Dyer's time. And even if he looks like he'd rather be absolutely, literally anywhere else in this city, up to and including getting his ass beat by any given youkai.]

Godot | Sutoku | OTA
[You ever get the vibe somebody does not want to be somewhere?
As Godot sits in the waiting room at the clinic, it's less of a vibe and nearly a visible wave of pure, unfiltered "nope." In spite of his moniker he arrives a bit early for his appointment, leaving him way too much time to pace restlessly around the waiting room, shuffle through any reading materials that might be available, sigh loudly and generally just bring down the mood in every way imaginable.
To make matters worse, he drains his thermos of coffee out of sheer nerves within ten minutes, leaving him coffeeless until after the appointment's over and he can get more.
Whether it's the vibes or the pacing or, let's face it, the glowing apparatus on his face, the restless lawyer is anything but inconspicuous in the lobby. And unfortunately, he's also anything but in a good mood.]
Can I help you? [Delivered in a quiet deadpan, to whoever he's caught staring or approaching him.]
2. Beating Your Head Against A Wall: The Thread (For medical staff or volunteers)
[So, Mr. Godot's blood test results were interesting. Quite a lot of oddities "interesting." How is this man alive "interesting."
But one outlier that's pretty easy to address is the amount of caffeine in his bloodstream. Suffice to say, it's quite a big number. The sort of number that a responsible medical professional would feel inclined to say something about.
To a man who already looks to be getting antsy that he doesn't have a cup of coffee in his hand as he sits in the exam room. And who looks like he knows exactly what's coming.]
Go ahead. Say your piece. I'm listening. [He's not listening and this is about to be the most absurd "consume in moderation" discussion you've ever experienced. You have been warned.]
3. Penance
[It's the day after Godot's most recent appointment, and he wasn't scheduled for follow-up. But in he comes with resolute determination, six mismatched thermoses of varying shapes and sizes slung over his shoulders and a paper sack in his hand. He has a muttered discussion with reception, then vanishes into the break room.]
Coffee?
[Volunteers and staff who drop in will find him ready to dispense a piping hot mug of coffee, lovingly and idiosyncratically prepared by his precise specifications-- and you should see what happens if he's asked for milk and sugar.
(At least he seems aware he's kind of a jerk, and willing to offer apologies in his own way.)]
4. Wildcard
(Happy to plan out or play out just about any clinic interactions. Hit me up if you've got an idea!)

[they'd watched him drain his coffee so quickly that it barely seemed possible, and it's only after a few more moments of watching him pace that they raise their head and tilt the sealed drink in his direction.]
It's not much, but I'm here for heart problems, so I probably shouldn't be drinking much caffeine right now. Do you want this to hold you over?

It doesn't have to mean anything, but there really is an awkward vulnerability to it, running into someone you know but don't actually know in a place as personal as the waiting room of a doctor's office. Either of them could be here for a routine check-up, of course, but Kazuma doubts any Soul in this place really concerns themselves with trivialities like that.
Which means they're both here there for something, and there's this I-know-you-and-you-know-me-and-now-we-know-something-private-about-each-other dynamic going on now that makes Kazuma uncomfortable because he hates being perceived in any way by other people, which is a him problem, but not one he has the self-restraint to let go unacknowledged. The point is he and Godot are both conspicuously sat in the waiting room of a medical clinic and Kazuma feels like he has to say something about it.
Is it... technically possible to try and catch Godot's eyes? Kazuma attempts it regardless.]

[ While Kim hadn't been one of the medical professionals with the poor fortune of dealing with Godot the other day, he is often in charge of the paperwork, which means he saw his caffeine levels and, yes, the notes on his patient chart that he had been... somewhat resistant to receiving that help. Irascible, Kim had written on his chart. For Kim's part, he is a cop, not a doctor. If an abundance of coffee is the worst thing in the fellow's system, that's entirely his own business.
Still, he's not certain that the doctors on staff would appreciate this methodology of making amends. ]
Sure, [ he says, though privately considers it unwise to accept drinks from strangers. But he's in the Clinic anyhow. What's the worst that could happen? ] It'll beat drinking the sludge in the break room.

kim kitsuragi | sutoku | ota
[ Though perhaps not all of the Clinic's volunteers and staff are aware of it, it is in fact one Kim Kitsuragi that has slowly been making the break room a more functional place, beginning with the radio and ending with supplying the room with a variety of prepackaged snacks for everyone using his handy dandy convenience store discount -- which yes, includes a bowl of fruit that more often than not goes untouched. You may find him:
A: Tinkering with the radio, which appears to be off-limits to most people for any purpose other than playing it. As one of Kim's purchases, however, he is singularly allowed. You may encounter him with the radio in pieces in front of him accompanied by a small case of tools and some spare parts in a bag in front of him, looking deeply focused on his task of continuous improvement. Or perhaps you see him sitting and listening to Jigokucho's closest comparison to NPR, evidently absorbed in listening to some curiosity of Yokai culture, as narrated in a soothingly dull voice.
B: Or perhaps you catch him in the kitchenette, unloading a bag of fruit into a bowl on the middle of the table and attending to the coffeemaker, murmuring about how they (he) really ought to invest in something of an upgrade. If he sees you lingering there, he may turn to you and ask, ] Did you want a cup?
ii. on-duty.
[ Kim is not necessarily a doctor -- merely trained in first-aid. Anything more complicated is something he'll leave to the medical professionals, but if you have any sort of physical injury from a bulletwound to a stabwound to a sprain, he's the guy you might wind up with, leaving the others to attend to more complicated patients. As people come into the front room, he glances up from some paperwork and says politely, ] Hello. Welcome to the Clinic. Please tell me your name and what it is you need from us today, and I'll see what I can do for you.
[ Unless, of course, it's readily apparent that you are in need of immediate assistance, at which point he'll whisk you away to a back room faster than you can ask for it. He does have common sense, after all. ]
iii. miscreants.
[ Of course, a clinic like this one isn't free of conflict. While most people seem to respect the rules put forth by the clinic, there will always be some hoping to bring clan conflicts here, or who are simply surly for the sake of being surly, let alone the free assistance that they're getting. In lieu of the proper doctors, it seems that this time, it's no other than Kim Kitsuragi that appears to be tasked with dealing with them. You may see him crowding them by the door, expression dark and tongue sharp, and you may nearly feel yourself quail in the harshness of his tone. The way he speaks is enough to make anyone reconsider their life choices, their lives of gleeful violence suddenly cut down to something pathetic and small in Kim's unrelenting gaze. ]
Do you really think this is acceptable behaviour? To come into a place like this and to bring your petty little squabbles in with you? To make the lives of those who would treat you even more difficult? You should be ashamed of yourselves. [ One reaches into his pocket, ostensibly for a knife, and his hand stills when Kim barks, ] Don't you dare.
[ You can come in to help him shepherd these ne'er-do-wells out, come chat with him in the aftermath... or maybe you're the one getting a talking to. Either way, Kim rarely gets properly angry, but roping the kind volunteers of the clinic into violent nonsense is a quick way to accomplish it. ]

Eiichi Segawa | Shuten | OTA
[Eiichi doesn't exactly have the world's most amazing bedside manner; not even the best in this clinic, frankly. But, unlike his blatantly rude way of carrying himself outside these walls, he's much more quiet and restrained. He doesn't seem cheerful, but he's clear and precise, and genuine when he works, rather than endlessly condescending and sarcastic. ] So, what's wrong?
[He's quick with first aid, and if it worse comes to, his studies in surgery mean he can sew up a wound if the hospital's too far (though don't expect him to be able to cut someone open on the spot). If you're sick with something, he's spent hours studying modern treatments; and, despite stating his refusal to deal with it to his fellow Shutens, if you have a cold or a flu... he knows exactly what painkillers and antihistamines to use, and there's a bed and plenty of water if you feel bad enough, though he would recommend going home for some hot food.]
ii. on break
[Break time though it might've been, Eiichi has never been one to actually... take breaks. When he's not actively helping a patient, or helping at the front desk when the receptionist's away, or whatever other matter he got up to, he could be in the break room... still filling out some kind of paperwork, or going over files, or even just some sort of medical textbook he'd found at the library or a bookstore, reading away. Usually with a cup of coffee, or one that was already empty.
Occasionally, he can be found in the garden, taking a smoke break; typically he prefers not to do it anywhere near the clinic, but sometimes he can't help himself. But at least he tries to be courteous of the plants, keeping out of the way as he blows smoke into the air.
Wherever he is, occasionally... there can be seen a little frog-like yokai (alleged) tottering after him, or carrying something like a stack of bandages or gauze on his head to deliver to one of the staff, or maybe a cup of tea for the staff or the patients (though he's very prone to spilling). If Eiichi's sitting at the front desk, or a table in the break room, the frog man can be seen sitting on the surface next to him while he works. Feel free to talk to him, he's friendly!]
iii. cleaning up
[Maybe it was an extremely... strange choice of occupation, cleaning blood and dealing with sick people when you were someone who was so virulently disgusted by dirt and germ. But Eiichi never brings it up while treating people, and it means where he's working is mostly (almost) immaculately clean. If he's not working with patients, or doing any other administrative work, then he can be found dawdling back and forth, cleaning up any stain and disinfecting any surface, and he was extremely adept at knowing how to clean up blood by now. Someone's a busy little bee.
Though, if you get in the way while he's trying to wipe something up or rinse something off, he can quickly turn sour.] Move.

emily dyer | sutoku | ota
often, she's engaged with patients, dispensing care, advice, or a carefully compounded medicine to those that need it. to those with the worst injuries, she's there with steady hands and a keen eye. though she can and will heal magically, particularly with things that would require an extended healing period, she won't do it for everything. you'll still need to wait for things like sprains, accidents, colds, to decide they're done with you - she's a firm believer in people needing to recall that they aren't invincible. particularly if you're a repeat visitor.
with her staff, she's cheery, always trying to make sure everyone has what they need to get about the day, inquiring how things are but also interested in whatever small talk they have or what's on their minds. she wants to be friends with people there, and Emily is grateful to every single one who puts in their time and effort into helping. she's there with her lists, her organization, and her planning to always improve and keep the place going strong. where she can help, she will, and she's happiest with things to do.
even she's not inexhaustible, however, and so on her breaks one can find her in one of two places for sure - either sitting in the break room, eyes closed and listening to whatever program is on the radio, or out in the garden for the fresh air. though at times, she'll have to be reminded to take a break in the first place. just because she's good at looking after others doesn't always mean she's good with herself.
other than that, Emily is available for whatever people might want or need.]
i realized this worked better than a TL forgive me
But she has a job to do, and it's important. If she's entrusted with the safety of those traveling in the wasteland, that's something she takes seriously. She owes no one here nothing, but she signed an oath, and that means doing her work to the best of her abilities. So. After a few moments more to compose herself, she does approach someone. Why hadn't she asked for like, a description?]
