Who says the proper time isn't now? [ The meal was mostly finished before Emily arrived. With this, he just needs to toss a couple last things together, and they're good to sit down. There's an actual table now, with chairs. One of them has a couple of pillows and blankets on it, just for the Bastard himself, even. ]

[ Slowly, the dishes get put onto the table. ]

[medicative]

[pulling away from the cat, she'll excuse herself to go wash her hands before she eats. what Nishitani has "forgotten" is noted but not commented on - that's his business, then. instead she returns and seats herself at the table with a smile.

if there's cups, she'll pour the wine to be polite. very civil. if the cat wants to join, he may.]

[ There are cups, and the cat does want to join. He has his own special chair right next to Nishitani's, piled with blankets and pillows just for him. Nishitani even has a piece of unglazed salmon out just for the boy, too. ]

[ He sits down beside Bastard, across from Emily. The lunch came together incredibly well, if he says so himself, and he's interested to see her response, but also: ] If you want more of anything, let me know baby. I got extras. [ He's enjoying a working fridge, does it show? ]

[what a little prince, getting his own fish.

that said, she utters a quick thanks, and begins to sample the meal. it's delicious, and she brought her appetite - he can probably see it in her expression, but she takes the time after a few bites to smile.]

It's wonderful. Where did you learn to cook, if you don't mind my asking?

[there. a simple, ordinary question.]

Where else? Home. [ Home, like that isn't a loaded concept for people like him. The food is fucking delicious and he's digging in just as much as her. He snaps his chopsticks at Bastard to keep the cat from trying to steal his salmon, too. Fucking cat still has a full piece to himself. ]

And where is home, hm?

[saying it so casually, she waits to see if he'll brush it off, or actually answer her.]

[ He's in a good mood, so: ] Back when I was a kid in Osaka. Had a cop uncle and a genius sister, so house keeping is where I slotted in. [ Keeping a tidy house helped him feel in complete control of his surroundings, putting elbow grease into a stubborn stain helped him forget the bullying at school. ]

[ He doesn't tell her that he was an orphan. Not yet. But his life is built on those foundations. ]

[even though her eyebrow lifts, she restrains any smart comments about him having a cop for an uncle. stranger things had occurred in life.]

If you cooked like this, I'm sure they had absolutely no complaints.

[the unspoken question is where they are now. but now, they're in hell - it's a stupid thing to assume. maybe his sister is doing fine, far away from the yakuza life. maybe his uncle is retired. maybe she's just hopeful.]

Though I'm sure wine wasn't involved.

Nah, we drank beer like civilized thugs. [ Nishitani smirks, eyes downturned slightly and something genuine in him. Drinking beer with Uncle B, late into the night, watching reruns of the most recent baseball game they'd both missed for whatever reason. ]

[ Nishitani doesn't know if his life could've gone any other way. ]

That's good to know. Next time I'll bring beer, so that you can remember all of the good times you had.

[despise the lightness of the words, she does note that genuine quality to his expression, and it's answered with her own. even if it's in little pieces, it's another piece of information about him. given, not forced. she appreciates it.]
