the literal jump is something he hasn't seen in a while. he half-wonders if it's him explicitly, or if the man had simply been that concentrated at the task at hand. something tells him that it was easily the latter. regardless, he doesn't deny that his eyes were already scanning over the wish. ]

You say that and yet you hide it with such shame. [ he gives an easy smile at that, not at all perturbed by the displeasure the other displays. if anything, mort was perfectly fine with glazing over this fact. at any rate, he continues: ]

Who is master?

(Ashamed. He isn't. But he is maybe... embarrassed? That's different, right?)

What's it matter to you? You some sort of fairy godmother?

the idea is quite preposterous, of course, but it also makes him chuckle slightly. more in a dark way than it does in an actual humorous way, however. still, he does see the charm in such a belief. ] Even if I was, I don't think you'd be any less difficult. Am I right?

[ but, he doesn't seem offended or miffed in the slightest. ]

But, I do have to say I've made people's wishes come true before.

[ at the expense of their lives and sanity, but listen... ]

If you're helping, it ain't coming true.

(The whole point of the evaluations is for the saniwa to prove their own strength and leadership when leading their armies. If outside forces are helping then the evaluation is void.)

[ unfortunately, hizen's offense isn't any less ... funny to mort.

sorry, except not really sorry. which is precisely why his smile doesn't dissipate any and his countenance remains easygoing.

but, the way the other spoke so firmly about "it's not coming true" does get a bit of an eyebrow raise. ] What do you mean? [ he half-wonders if it's him specifically, or if there was something more to his wish that just isn't obvious to him. ]

Do you dislike the idea of me helping that much?

(It's been five minutes and Hizen is already sick of this guy.

(He is sick of everyone).)

(With a quiet growl, he takes his wish, folds the first part of it, and shows it for the other see,)

well and let and help master pass their next evaluation.

(There's clearly more but he isn't going to show that to anyone. He'd rather die.)

If some rando like you helps out then you're fucking up the whole assignment.

[ fortunately, mort was relatively skilled in not registering aggression as aggression. or displeasure as displeasure. he was accustomed to being on the other end of threats and one-sided arguments even against his own (singular) friend (who actually does not consider him a friend at all), and so it's almost familiar to mort.

hence, he peers over his words curiously without being ruffled in the least. ] So this is a trial for them and them alone?

[ a pause. ] Is your master very skilled?

(HE BALLS UP HIS STUPID FORTUNE AND THROWS IT ON THE GROUND.

He just feels dumb.)

Am I a rando? [ said more to himself than it is in any confirmation in the word, its meaning, or how it relates to him. ... it's the first time he's been called that.

but, not the first time he's been metaphorically shoo'd away. still, he stares in the direction he throws it in. almost like how any adult would pick up a toy discarded by a petulant child (or pet), he leans down picking it up before unraveling it. ]

What if they fail because you discarded your wish?

[ he's not serious, but it doesn't mean he isn't going to pose the question anyway. maybe try and make him think twice if just because this was a little fun, maybe? ]

(Then he'll be able to see the entire wish!)

Make sure everyone is safe and well and help master pass their next evaluation.

(... Hm.

Hizen seems pretty caught off guard by the suggestion, though. He freezes and looks almost uncertain at first,)

Then...

(Would it be his fault? He tenses and frowns. Torn between this own desire to support the saniwa in everyway and his own understanding of how and why the evaluations happen.)

If that's all it takes, then they aren't ready. Wishing for what you want ain't gonna be enough. You gotta be strong and put in the work.

(He understands this. If the saniwa had been so weak they needed to rely on a miracle to impress him when he was the overseer before, then he would have failed them, too, he thinks.)

[ it is a respectable belief. to begin with, mort wasn’t superstitious in the least. even the altar for the dragon lord was nothing beyond simple folly. a simple wish for the people to be protected under the dragons. it was merely the dragon’s whims which would guarantee that protection or not, and mort quite frankly expected that the companion to this man would simply have the skills or not. or perhaps, simply fail due to some other unforeseen circumstance based off of someone else’s whimsical fancies.

such was the nature of life, but that doesn’t mean mort wasn’t going to continue this line of questioning. instead, he gives a small nod, deliberating over each of his words. ] Yes, that may be the case for your master.

But, what of everyone’s safety?
