[ Waking up at five in the morning isn't remarkably early but purpose drives him to roll out of his blankets. Despite the time he is visibly excited for the day, there are plans and he wants to be sure he is completely ready. Most enthusiasm isn't inspired by the anticipation of finally watching a film. That may be a new experience, however, so is accepting Chongyun's invitation. Ever since they met all those years ago as children, it was he who planned every expedition, every adventure through the land. The hunt for evil spirits, tales made up on the fly, and off they went. Or the ocassions when a request was enough to have his friend join him on some tedious assignment that became increasingly less dull with company.
Unfortunately for anyone who needs a little more shut eye, Xingqiu begins a noisy round through the flat examining his clothes to find an appropriate outfit for the day. With his closet consisting of a dining chair along with half the table, most of the sofa, and some garments have even made their way to his bookshelf it takes him a moment to get an idea of what he wants to wear. Afterwhich it is just a matter of getting bathed and dressed.
Aware he likely disturbed his roommate he would have to make it up her some other day.
As quickly as he got up, he was just as promptly ready which remarkly he finds surprising that not much time was spent making himself presentable. Staring at his phone screen wouldn't bring eleven o'clock about any faster, so instead he opts for breakfast as a way to pass the time and afterpreparing then eating a light meal he settles on reading a book. This is a hobby he can typically find himself lost in for hours; with Xingqiu now attempting to peruse through a novel there is silence once more in the flat, however, today reading doesn't come easy. Finding himself staring at the same sentence, over and over he reads the same words but his attention is elsewhere.
Which is why he ends up falling asleep on top of the garment upholstered sofa.
The urgent knocking on the door is what draws him out of his slumber, practically scrambling to his feet he trips on his way to the door though he manages to catch himself as he makes it to the entrance. Anticipation at seeing the exorcist's face brings a smile to his own, the door swings open all too quickly as he settles a hand on his hip. Right outside Xingqiu finds disappointment as a startled youkai stares at him and he stares right back.
The creature holding a small container in its scaly hands soon makes a request. Apparently it's his neighbor in need of sugar which he ends up providing and then he wanted the youkai run off. After closing the door he expects that any minute Chongyun should show up, it is getting close to that time. Maybe he shouldn't have gotten so excited when he heard that knock earlier but it can't be helped when once again his attention is drawn to the door because this time it has to be his friend. Only when he swings the door open does he find the same youkai and his smile remains despite faltering enthusiasm. This time it needs butter which Xingqiu promptly provides. After watching the creature go for a second time he decides that he won't fall for that again.
The third time there is a knock on his door, he doesn't rush to open it. When he does there is barely a smile on his face. ]

Chongyun.

After yawning and waking up more fully with some stretches, he begins with training of the body. A cool shower with nicely scented soap; he’s careful to select the shampoo that promises “body and shine” to go along with its crisp fresh scent. He leaves the matching conditioner in his hair for the full seven minutes as instructed on the label before washing it out, and even plays around with the razor a bit before sighing, resigning himself to the fact that there’s really nothing to shave. The “manscaping” portion will have to be skipped.
Once out of the shower, he cracks open the lotion that was recommended to him—taking a generous portion in hand, he splats it onto his face and rubs it in thoroughly. The cashier at the store had sworn it would make his skin look glowing; he isn’t sure about that after he’s done, feeling like he looks no different than normal, but it does make his face feel very nice. He takes another second to sigh at how he has no facial hair to speak of—no need for the razor here, either.
While his hair dries he switches over to another aspect of training: training of the wardrobe. He turns to his closet to pull out a few articles of clothing.
Since he almost always wears the same thing, he had to buy new clothes for the sake of changing it up. This isn’t a job or an investigation or even work for the Tamamo clan, so wearing his usual uniform hadn’t seemed right. The associate at the clothing store picked out … basically everything the moment he indicated that he had no preferences. She had picked out a whole outfit herself, nodding and smiling while using him as her own personal dress up doll. She claimed he looked like “a cutie straight outta BTS”. While he had he had no idea what that meant, he had nodded and purchased the clothing anyway. She had spent a good deal of time picking it out, after all. It is comfortable, and while he’s very unused to stepping outside the box when it comes to his clothing—almost always wearing the same thing, or something close—this is what training is, right? Right.
Hair finally dry, he styles it: pushed back and out of his face, swiped slightly to the left. Satisfied, he makes sure he has his wallet, keys, and phone before departing for Xingqiu’s flat. Along the way a few women wink at him and wave, but he has no time to help them figure out what spirit is making their eyes twitch like that. Another exorcist will have to step up today.
It’s only when he’s inside Xingqiu’s building and accidentally bumps into some scaly little youkai carrying some butter—it trips and the butter splats on the floor—that he panics. The creature glares up at him but its face contorts into knowing amusement, “Who are you looking all dressed up for, huh?” It chuckles something about youth before picking the butter up with its hands and putting it back on the dish, clearly intending to use the floor butter anyway, “Five second rule and all that.”
But Chongyun isn’t thinking about the five second rule. Now he’s panicking that he’s overdressed and weird—what if Xingqiu makes fun of him for looking silly? Scrubbing hands through his hair, his mop of blue falls back into its usual look.
Does he have time to go back home and change into his usual clothes? Glancing at the time tells him … no. They would be late for the movie, and they definitely wouldn’t be able to investigate the nefarious cousin of that cashier.
So he trudges forward, knocking on Xingqiu’s door, worried that he overthought this too much. They’re just friends hanging out. Right?
When his friend answers, Chongyun’s stomach drops at how there’s barely a smile. Ah, does he not want to go to the movies after all? Does he look weird? Was he the only one excited for this? Mustering up all of his strength, the exorcist pretends like he isn’t thinking about a hundred things at once. ]
Xingqiu. Are you ready to go?
[ He offers a little smile of his own. It’s the first time he’s been the one to really take the initiative to plan an outing since Xingqiu is normally the extroverted one. He really wants this to go well, even if he’s already made a mistake in not just wearing his exorcist garb as usual. Hopefully Xingqiu won’t roast him too hard over his outfit… ugh… ]

At the very least that is the idea Xingqiu has settled on. His own sudden insight does not necessarily mean that there are corresponding feelings, he would have to content himself with life as is. Besides, what if he just makes things needlessly complicated. It's already difficult enough that they're separated by the boundaries of factions although he has yet to see any repercussions for fraternizing with members of different clans.
Either way, he has given everything much thought. There is the chance they both wish for wildly different things, and would eventually lead completely different lives. Time has a way of changing things after all. Here in hell, Chongyun's honest and genuine nature makes it more obvious than ever what he truly wants. Xingqiu while surrounded by many varied people wanted nothing more than only a few close confidants. Meanwhile, Chongyun seemed ready to navigate a sea of individuals. Definitely not conducive to anything beyond friendship. Or was he just trying to convince himself? It's hard being young, coming to a realization, and attempting to be rid of sentiment for the sake of maintaining a friendly bond.
However, he can't imagine how he is the only one to fully comprehend all his previous actions. In his own opinion, if he was completely honest in regards to Chongyun then he would have to admit his friend is weird. There is simply no denying that, but then he is weird himself, that's the pair they make. His own eccentricities are only known to close associates, along with a few people from the guild.
Now with Chongyun standing before him, surprise finally settles upon his features. There is something obvious to remark on, it isn't just visual though the change in wardrobe is the first thing noted. Seeing his friend cling to garments with only a single deviation this turns out to be delightfully unexpected.
Give him a moment. He wants to take this picture in full. It's not the view he suspects he will see often. ]
I guess so...
[ There isn't much else for him to do, he has been ready for hours. He takes a single step forward which reminds him that perhaps he should consider grabbing his shoes and putting them on before they head out. Then they can be on their way to observe the film. Which frankly at this point, it is the last thing on his mind, they could be watching paint dry and that would be just fine. It's only now that it feels odd knowing Chongyun was leading this excursion. Well, if need be he could always make plans of his own and deviate from the chosen path. ]
I mean give me just a moment.
[ It takes him less than a minute to get his shoes on and with that, he is ready to head out, for real this time. ]
Okay, now we can go.
no subject
Okay.
[ He smiles once his friend comes out again. It's a soft smile, affectionate and fond with a hint of something else. Something unspoken, but keenly felt in his chest. A few weeks ago it didn't really have a proper name, but Chongyun has worked hard at putting the pieces of his own feelings together. It's a bit clearer now, but still so new for him. What he knows best is exorcism. Anything other than that... he has much less experience with.
But what really matters is spending time with his friend—this cross-faction thing has really put a cramp in their normal time together, and, even if his feelings for the other boy have become something that no longer feels right being defined as friendship alone ... these are feelings he can nurse quietly.
Knowing that doesn't stop him from reaching out to thread their fingers together. Emboldened by how they've already held hands beneath the cherry blossoms, he gives Xingqiu's a gentle squeeze. ]
Let's go.
[ It isn't often that Chongyun leads the way, but this time, he does. The movie theater isn't far since they're already in Sutoku territory and he specifically chose a place that wouldn't be far from Xingqiu's flat. ]
I'm actually not too sure what this is about, but a friend of mine is involved to some degree. [ a friend he has zero idea that is the lead whatsoever. that's going to be a fun surprise. he's been thinking that perhaps the older man had offered some exorcist wisdom to make the story more realistic, or maybe purged a spirit from the set. ] Natori. Have you met him? He's in my clan. He is also an exorcist.
no subject
It causes him to pause in his steps, and briefly glance back as he considers returning to his flat. That notion is quickly discarded the moment Chongyun laces their fingers together, a reminder of the invitation he extended to attend the Night Parade together and the open offer he made. He extended his hand then and Chongyun took it. This time there is no prompting on his part, Chongyun takes the initiative much like when asking him to view the film. He does wonder what it all means. Perhaps the exorcist has decided to be more assertive in their collaboration. That is the simplest conclusion he can come to and yet he is left warm around the ears.
It's unpleasant. Embarrassment is generally uncomfortable, especially to this degree.
Setting his sights in front of him, it's a way to avoid looking at Chongyun, and more importantly, he hopes to collect himself before his friend notices any changes. Warmth won't completely desert him not while he holds Chongyun's hand but he does recover enough once they step into the elevator to produce a smile for the exorcist. Produce yes because he has to manufacture that expression as he would for guests of his father or brother. And yet, that was much more difficult than putting up an act for strangers. ]
The movie was mentioned to me before.
[ He doesn't attempt to wrestle the lead, he just lets Chongyun guide him along. Again there is a difference, an extreme one because he really is left with no thoughts to pursue over the course of action and possibilities that this excursion may take. So really all he is left to think about is what this change in Chongyun really means and that's about as stressful as considering his work left behind in Liyue. ]
But I am not sure who that may be. I do believe I have come across someone involved in the film myself. I'll admit that gentleman appears completely different in the movie's promotional art. It's not a stretch to say when I came across him there were peculiarities that made him noteworthy.

[ ... the continue chatting along the way to the theater, fingers intertwined the whole time. Even when they reach the front window to hand in their tickets, Chongyun keeps his hand clasped with Xingqiu's, one-handedly exchanging the stubs for new ones that allow them access.
The cashier is the same girl as the first time; she recognizes Chongyun and nods to Xingqiu, introducing herself as Kooki, and that Chongyun had lent her an ear when she had been upset with her cousin Kandi. She talks a bit more about the situation while she processes their pre-tickets and gives them the stubs to enter the theater with. Kandi's been parading Steve under her nose to brag about them being together, and she can't escape them no matter where she goes. She doesn't even really care about Steve, she swears while tapping on the computer and printing their receipt, it's the principle of it all. Who the heck steals someone's boyfriend like that?!
Feeling bad for ranting so much, she includes a free snack voucher with their tickets and waves them off with a smile. The snacks bar is stacked, and when Xingqiu looks indecisive between a pack of cookies and a cup of cinnamon sugar soft pretzels, Chongyun applies the voucher for one and buys the other so his friend has both. They each get a drink, and Chongyun also orders some gummies as well. So. Much. Sugar.
Weighed down with their loot, the boys drop into their assigned seats. The theater is surprisingly crowded with ... girls. Actually, they might be the only two guys—ah, wait, nope. There's one other guy sitting a few rows ahead of them with a girl openly snuggling against his shoulder, glancing expectantly toward the door, and then back to aggressively cuddling her date. But aside from the three of them, the rest of the movie-goers are excited young women clutching promotional art, eyes gleaming as they prepare to see "that handsome face" on the silver screen. ]
Uh ... wow. There are a lot of girls, huh?
[ Now he's starting to get a little nervous. Is this a girly flick or something? Like, a romance? ]
no subject
So then...
He could continue to ponder what possibly led his friend to miss the promotional works, or he could enjoy the moment. Ultimately Xingqiu opts to focus on the present; On their hands clasped together, the way their fingers are intertwined, and the warmth of Chongyun's touch.
Guided by Chongyun who had prior experience at this establishment, they make their way to the ticket booth. He doesn't fail to note the gleam of recognition in the cashier's eyes and soon it becomes obvious why she took note of Chongyun. The two had met prior. He opts to remain quiet, yet polite as he gives Kooki the utmost attention but it is truly his friend navigating the conversation. It was best if one of them attempted to take in details. It would appear this is the girl that gave Chongyun the information on the supposedly nefarious Kandi. Well, he doesn't condone Kandi's actions but he wouldn't go as far as refer to that young woman as the spawn of evil either.
After listening to the two converse it was unfortunate that the ticket shortage never came up in conversation. Now that is something he truly would have wanted to investigate rather than teen romances and betrayals. However, he is pleased that for all their trouble they would be able to get some snacks. His monetary situation isn't the best in hell so inevitably he feels some guilt in allowing his friend to treat him.
It leaves him wondering if Chongyun ever felt the same back in Liyue.
When they eventually drop in their seats, he does reach over to get a sip of the soda Chongyun bought. He had noted from the start there was a strong female presence among the crowd which made sense given it was mostly consisting of young women. Girls clutching posters, chatting and ever arguing amongst themselves, a strange group... ]
You just noticed? Even at the concession stand, there were mostly young ladies there.
[ Reaching for the pretzel he breaks off a piece before he holds it close to Chongyun's lips. ]
no subject
[ A little flustered, he takes a bit of the piece that Xingqiu holds to his lips. Normally he isn't too bad at noticing things ... but he's been distracted ever since Xingqiu agreed to come with him. So distracted that he forgot to even question Kooki about that spirit guzzling tickets. Thoughts of Xingqiu have been chewing on his brain for weeks now, and, for the first time in his life, the young exorcist hasn't been thinking about hunting spirits full force.
It isn't as though these feelings are new. It's just now that Chongyun understands them he can't stop focusing on them, all the passion that bubbles beneath the surface finally having another outlet other than single-minded determination to purge evil. It's almost becoming a problem, isn't it? How could he not have noticed all the girls?! It's like Xingqiu has a damn glowing force field around him that completely blocks everyone else out. Is that normal? Or is he dying? Can feelings like this make you die?
The exorcist tries to focus on chewing instead. Fails, because he realizes just how close those slender fingers had been to his lips, and that he licked one when he took a bite of that pretzel piece. And that, if he takes a sip of his drink? It'll be an indirect... and in, indirect.... indir,,,,,ect,,,,,ki,,.......sSSss...
His face has gone numb. ]
Sorry. I should have looked more into what it's about. [ that's his bad. he sighs, leaning in a little closer to Xingqiu, ] Well ... it's still good to support a friend. He seemed happy when I said I'd see it.
[ He smiles, reaching over to rest his fingers on Xingqiu's wrist lightly. ]
Thanks for coming.
no subject
Taking a sip he looks up at Chongyun as the other speaks, he soon sits up straight his attention diverted toward the large screen. Where movie previews were once playing there is now an advisement asking patrons to either turn their cellphones off or at least switch them to silent. That prompts Xingqiu to busy himself with lowering the volume on his phone. ]
That's quite okay. If I wanted a preview of what the film is about I could have done my own research. Maybe I wanted it to be a surprise?
[ Sensing Chongyun shifting in his seat Xingqiu looks up as he pockets his phone. They're definitely closer now, perhaps Chongyun found his seat uncomfortable? No, that's not it. Xingqiu comprehends as there is an utter lack of subtly. Of course, he could lie to himself and keep their friendship intact. If there is anything he knows is that he understands what he wants out of life and also what he can't have. Meanwhile, Chongyun is likely still sorting through a sea of emotions. ]
Thanks for inviting me.
You know I didn't get a chance to tell you earlier but you look good, Chongyun. I am impressed. Although it does take time to get used to.
no subject
It all feels good. So much so that he takes a sip of that drink, sealing the indirect kiss, to cool himself off a bit. ]
Thanks. Since I'm not working today, I thought it would be nice to change it up.
[ An exorcist's work is never done. Back home in Liyue, he was always on the road somewhere, seeking evil spirits or chasing rumors. Even here, he's been busting his ass on several fronts: trying to figure out how to get back home, following up on rumors of mischievous spirits, satisfying his contract, protecting the hapless Tamamos in his clan. The change is part of putting all of that aside to spend time with his favorite person.
Even if he's pulled away from the lean, Chongyun doesn't let go of Xingqiu's hand. Emboldened by the compliment, he takes another leap by sliding his grip down from the other boy's wrist so that he can lace their fingers together as the lights shut completely for the movie to begin playing.
He's almost relaxed again, finally settling into his nerves (though they still tingle) when Natori's face fills the damn screen. Which is why Chongyun chokes, gripping Xingqiu's hand while the girls in the audience squeal — and then squeal even louder when the shadow of the gecko crawls across the man's face. There he is!! some gasp, pointing at the shadow youkai as it slithers through the scene.
Chongyun leans in so he can whisper in Xingqiu's ear, not wanting to be loud and disturb anyone despite the girls doing exactly that in their lizard fan vapors, ]
I didn't know he was the lead actor... once, I tried to slap that off his face. I didn't know it's always there.
no subject
His eyebrows knit together in thought as the boy beside him enjoys the flush of warmth then tries to cool off with a drink. No, Xingqiu's thoughts are nowhere near the vicinity of musing over indirect kisses rather he puts consideration towards Chongyun's clothes. He would just have to ask him about them some other time. ]
If it's something you enjoy. Truthfully it's not a bad thing that you finally considered purchasing a second outfit.
[ Intention entirely conspicuous Xingqiu's attention falls to his wrist as he follows with sight Chongyun's fingers tracing skin until they find their way to his hand. He allows his friend to enjoy himself as he derives some sort of delight out of weaving their fingers together, while Xingqiu fights the urge to give the exorcist's hand a squeeze.
It takes him a moment to realize the film has begun, and it's only thrilled shrieks from the feminine audience members that has him look up. It's a face he has seen before, although there is a drastic difference, last he came across this person he appeared entirely suspicious... and if anything a little grab. ]
Chongyun that's rude.
[ Obviously the polite to do would have been pretend not to see anything while take as many opportunities to discretely follow that lizard as it traveled across that man's skin. ]
no subject
Chongyun sighs, nodding. He knows. Oh, he knows. It hadn't been planned or intentional—an automatic reaction that had ended ... badly. So badly that he had slapped Natori into the river. He'll omit that bit of information, though. ]
Yeah ... he's surprisingly fragile. I think he needs more vitamins.
[ Not that his fans seem to agree. They shriek in delight whenever his face shows on the screen, which is a lot considering he's apparently the lead?! An exorcist and an actor, where does the man find the time? Regardless, Chongyun settles into his seat, clasping his fingers over Xingqiu's again to hold his hand.
This is nice. The movie isn't bad—the story is actually interesting—but it's really pleasant to be with Xingqiu like this. It makes it easy to forget that they're surrounded by hordes of excited girls. ]
no subject
As for the man who stars in the film, if he were honest most of the relevant information he has gleaned has come from Chongyun himself. Unless he counts the prior knowledge gained through first-hand experience that the man is a paper bag-wearing oddball. And as far as Chongyun's suggestion goes, well, Xingqiu thinks it would take a lot more than vitamins to strengthen any frail man.
Regarding time and talent, Xingqiu wouldn't know, it's not like he has to juggle between responsibility and aspiration. So maybe he isn't as impressed as Chongyun. Instead, he lets his friend enjoy the film as he seemingly chokes his hand to death while a chorus of pleased squeals reverberates through the audience in intervals. In fact, he notes that he can even prepare himself for the delighted screams.
While he does follow the story along, his attention is also on the people within the audience. To his right is a freckled brunette who is holding a journal in her hands, the cover of the book is littered with pictures of the lead — some of these images he suspects were obtained without the man's approval.
Further past is a small girl whose features are quite similar to the brunette's, sisters perhaps? This girl is holding her phone up and it takes him a second to realize she is attempting to capture the whole of the film.
Turning his attention forward, in the seat ahead of them is a strawberry blond girl who is leaning forward in her seat. She is either the loudest person in the audience or their proximity gives her an edge. It takes him a moment before he opts to look back. There a girl wearing a shirt with Natori's face plastered on the front seems completed fixated on the movie until she notes him looking at her. Her expression turns sour before she mouths something that utterly confuses him.
He's mine.
Okay, yeah maybe he will keep his attention towards the front. It's through observing members of the audience that his gaze finally lands on the only other male member besides them. ]

He had started dating Kooki after meeting her in a fast food chain (or something, he kind of doesn't remember). She had been friendly and thought he was cute. Girls didn't normally like him, so he had been thrilled by her attention. He had been even more thrilled when her cousin Kandi had suddenly shown interest as well after they met. Which is exactly why he's on a clandestine date with the latter; Kandi watches the movie while clutching his arm, but every so often she steals glances toward the doorway as though she's looking for someone else.
Steve doesn't mind. He doesn't mind much of anything. He's the kind of guy that fades into the background, has a face no one remembers, and doesn't have much of a personality. Which is why he doesn't mind sitting in this theater with a bunch of girls who are clearly a bit unhinged about the handsome actor starring in this movie.
Chongyun doesn't notice that the girls in the theater are ... aggressively fangirling. He doesn't notice Steve looking at Kandi with hearts in his boring eyes or Kandi looking away from Steve toward the doorway in wait of something. Well, not all that much. Drawn into the story and holding Xingqiu's hand, normally he would feel content—but he's restless. Drawing his eyes away from the screen, gaze lingers on his friend's face.
There's meaning in that look. Intention. That aching sweetness that keeps bubbling in his chest threatens to reach a boiling point, and as soon as Xingqiu turns his face toward his enough, he leans in to kiss him.
Which is exactly when Kandi shrieks, feigning shocked fury when Kooki comes in with a broom in anticipation of the end of the film—only about ten minutes away—flinging her large popcorn bucket behind her. The bucket flies and lands directly over Chongyun's head, soggy popcorn and butter smearing into his hair and stopping his kiss half-way there.
Shocked, Chongyun goes frigid as butter leaks down his face and neck and a fight over Steve breaks out between the two women, the rest of the theater erupting into fury that they've interrupted the end of the film.
It's scorned-women chaos. Beneath the bucket, Chongyun's face is on fire. Wha, what ... even just happened ..? ]

If Xingqiu leans forward in his seat it's not due to interest in the awry couple, instead, he has been led to take action.
The moment they locked eyes in the dark theater room Rory know that this was her rival! Her bright strawberry blond hair was a contrast to deep blue locks and then there was that cool gaze that settled on her before it quickly became one of dismissive superiority. She knew immediately that she had to act. Silently she made her declaration: Natori Shuuichi is hers. All hers (Which would likely be news to the lead actor)! Not satisfied that her proclamation did not elicit any reaction out of her nemesis she began to kick the chair in front of her.
Light taps of her foot became progressively harder for Xingqiu to ignore as she ramped up the strength behind each kick.
And looking around once more, aside from girls transfixed by the actor's face there are a few squabbles breaking out. Their low whispers and murmurs are hurried words permeated with anger. There is an agitated feeling in the atmosphere, tension is high. Something has to give, something is going to happen. His free hand clenches tightly on the armchair until his knuckles are white.
These girls are crazy!
And that is exactly what he wants to tell Chongyun; unable to settle down and relax to calmly experience movie magic he may have missed some key points of the story being projected. Instead, he remains vigilant, cautious, looking about, and finally, he takes the opportunity to face his friend. Xingqiu needs to tell him they have to escape, there is another hard kick that almost has him standing on his feet to face the girl in the back row but he ends up transfixed by his friend's face.
Cheeks warmed a rosy red, eyes clear after a storm, that face he knows well seems to be getting closer. He wants to say something but he finds himself at a loss for words. Is this? Now? It's happening now? His desire to deepen their bond into something more has not waned, even in his clumsy attempts to convince himself that it would be for the best. With bated breath he waits for the moment their lips will meet, lashes flutter until finally, they fan against his cheeks but there never is a kiss.
A shriek resounds through the theater and it's pandemonium.
Great. See. These girls are crazy!
Xingqiu wordlessly stands and prompts Chongyun to do the same as he guides the exorcist between the battles that the young women are engaged in. While some of the girls want to get the film rolling again there are others starting to quarrel over who is Natori's true love or biggest fan so there is no progress. Best they leave.
It's not until they're out of the theater room that Xingqiu removes the popcorn bucket from Chongyun's head. ]
...That was an experience.

[ Chongyun blinks, eyes burning because of the liquid butter having dripped into his eyes. Thankfully Xingqiu was able to navigate them out of the chaos while he was bucketed, and, honestly, he’s kind of glad he was blinded as the women turned on each other like angry raccoons.
It sounded savage. ]
Women in love may be more fearsome than demons.
[ Before he can feel sorry for himself about how his kiss had been completely ruined by that bucket, he can’t help to feel bad for Natori. Some of his fans really are—very aggressive.
Back to feeling bad for himself. A weight’s dropped in Chongyun’s stomach; he had been waiting to try and kiss Xingqiu and never expected that it would go so badly when he finally went for it. To top it all off, now he’s sticky and covered in grease. His clothes are stained, butter having leaked south and all over him. He feels terrible, so he must look terrible. There’s no way Xingqiu would want to kiss him now.
Chongyun wipes his face with the back of his sleeve. No point in trying to salvage it. ]
Should we head back?
[ He glances out the wide windows of the theater; it’s started to rain, clear droplets pounding the earth steadily. They don’t have an umbrella but between heading back into the theater to catch the end of the film or heading out … the safer choice is clear.
He turns back to Xingqiu with a little smile. ]
A walk in the rain sounds nice right now.

That's love? Looks like obsession to me.
[ Recalling those candid photographs of Natori all across the freckled brunette's journal, he can't help a shudder. Women alone weren't frightened, anyone could be when crazed infatuation leads to disregarding others' comfort and solely acting on impulse. There is a word for people that go to such lengths to know everything about a person, to maniacally learn every detail about them — and boy did he hear enough about Natori today in whispers.
A nod is all he can muster, there is no use in lingering here. Xingqiu barely got a grip on the story and there is no way they will be seeing its conclusion.
Before taking any steps towards the door, he reaches out to wipe at the grease that cakes Chongyun's fine features. It's a shame, after all the trouble the exorcist went through in selecting an outfit for the occasion yet butter does little to diminish good looks. A handsome face remains a handsome face. Maybe he should lean in and seal their lips together, reward Chongyun for his effort. Xingqiu doesn't. Another loud shriek and at the door of the theater room stands that red-haired girl. A blossoming blackeye forming and yet she is ready to continue fighting.
"He is mine!"
And that's fine. Xingqiu thinks she can have Natori, he doesn't want him! He grabs Chongyun's hand, it's time to run. ] Yeah, sure. Nice! Let's just go, let's just go.
[ No matter what, that is a fight he cannot win. If he beats her up and subdues her then he would have beat up a young teenage girl; if he does nothing then he would be beaten by an unarmed untrained teenage girl. Yeah, he is out. ]

He looks back and forth between his friend and the girl. It isn’t much of a battle; his hand is quickly grabbed and they’re out the door—there’s a highpitched scream from behind them, a stomping noise as the girl stomps her feet, but she doesn’t seem willing to chase them outside and into the deluge.
At least it makes him a little less buttery. Water soaks into his clothes and hair; he used his free hand to push blue strands away from his eyes, taking them back to clear his face. He ended up with this kind of hairstyle in the end, after all.
Their footsteps echo against the continuous fall of rain. ]
Who was that? What was she talking about?
[ The fact that a random girl perceived Xingqiu as her main competition for moviestar actor Natori’s feelings doesn’t even cross his mind as a possibility, given how absurd it is. ]

There is no hesitation as he plunges into the night streets veiled by thick curtains of rain and he urges Chongyun to do the same. It's almost astounding that they aren't followed, after brief surprise he only finds gratitude towards the rain. However, their savior would only see them both become a sopping wet mess. Well, his own clothes are only waterlogged, Chongyun has to contend with buttery residue.
Steps don't falter even when he notes Chongyun brushing wet locks back away from his forehead. It's a good look he silently admits to him although the action prompts him to brush to the side his own uneven bangs as they stick to his forehead while obscuring his vision. ]
I have no clue.
[ Regarding which part? All of it!
This is the first time he has caught a glimpse of that girl, as for what she wants he only has a vague idea. In his mind, it is entirely preposterous which is what makes it difficult to accept that something so ridiculous is unfolding in his life. And — Chongyun was — great that moment was ruined. There is no helping a sigh. ]
Do you think we can still make a stop at that bakery in this rain?
no subject
Okay, it isn’t Natori’s fault, but Chongyun is feeling salty enough to blame his movie star face for the chaos in the theater.
And Steve. Fuck that guy. ]
I think so. The stores are still open.
[ But he isn’t looking in the direction of the bakery.
His eyes are rapt on Xingqiu, tone of his voice vaguely distracted. Droplets run down the other boy’s face and soak into his clothes, showing off the handsome lines of his figure. It’s cold, so light goosebumps flush across his pale skin. His lips are pale like peach blossoms. Even when drenched like a sewer rat, Xingqiu is still pretty.
The cold from the rain keeps Chongyun grounded even when his heart begins to beat a little faster in trepidation. ]
… Xingqiu.
[ Reaching out, the exorcist clasps his hands over Xingqiu’s shoulders. Without giving it any more damned thought, Chongyun leans in and finally does what he’s been wanting to do for a long time now.
He kisses him.
Lips meet lips. A little cold from the rain, with a hint of warmth hidden beneath the chill of getting caught in the storm. It’s a firm press, one that lingers as Chongyun’s light eyelashes droop. ]

Rather than look towards Chongyun for guidance, Xingqiu opts instead to make that suggestion but his friend's attention isn't on getting them moving now that they're some distance from the theater. It's perplexing to see such a distracted look upon the usually focused exorcist's face. He feels a smile tugging at his lips, just about ready to make a teasing remark before short laughter rings out as he leans in close. ]
What? Is there something on my face?
[ But in response he hears his own name spoken. That tone was odd, it lacks the usual exasperation that is typical of Chongyun.
When hands land on his shoulders, the remnants of his laughter fade away until all that is left is a calm expression on his face. Though he lacks experience, there is some understanding, he has read enough to know this scene. A couple caught under the rain and more importantly by their own emotions. It almost takes the magic away from what would be his first kiss. Not entirely, not the instant their lips meet. It's like a spark, weird how he can feel warm all over despite being soaked.
So he may not know what he is doing but he is content to make his best effort and kiss Chongyun back. And even when it all ends, there is a lingering sensation. ]
If you hadn't. I would have.
[ Because really. Maybe not while out in the rain, but tonight, he would have kissed Chongyun. ]

At the end of it he's a bit breathless, cheeks pink despite the continuous cool the storm provides. In a way, he's grateful for the deluge—something like this would normally have him overheating, but the constant rainfall keeps his condition in check.
When Xingqiu confirms that he would have, Chongyun smiles. A small thing. Gentle, fond, with a hint of shyness. ]
How about we head back? I have some snacks at my place. Not as good as the bakery, [ he reaches out to slide their hands together, twining their fingers together, ] but we should probably dry off.

Typically he can show far more restraint but after that kiss, he feels entirely giddy. He recognizes his own feelings of contentment, joy and there is a hint of pride. Chongyun can take the initiative, take the steps necessary to strive forward. Of course, he has always recognized that his friend has the capability but it is not often that he acts on a notion alone being cautious of his condition. Today was different, today they kissed. ]
Is that your way of asking for us to be alone? Do you want another kiss already?
[ Another kiss. That would be their second.
That's right. That kiss was their first.
His first kiss.
Funny how that idea only truly settles now when previously his attention had been on the scenery, then watching as Chongyun's face got closer until his features almost blurred comedically. Their lips touched, it felt soft, gentle in a way that he had only imagined a kind boy like Chongyun would approach romantic gestures. Imagined. But he had also imagined Chongyun stumbling through the whole process.
All these thoughts only made Chongyun more endearing; often he mused of them being together and that had all been ignited by their stroll through the cherry blossom grove veiled in the soft pink hue of petals.
The hand at his lips moves to his forehead as his gaze lowered.
Realization had been slow leaving his face heated. ]
Let's dry off.

Nn.
[ Chongyun's voice is low as he leads the way back to his apartment. They're already drenched from the storm, so there's little point in ducking into one of the flickering convenience stores to buy an umbrella now. It soaks to the bone, but he barely feels it when every one of his nerves is focused on the faint warmth of Xingqiu's hand in his. ]
I ... [ his voice breaks a little, a touch of rasp coloring its normal smoothness as his adam's apple bobs. awkwardly, he clears his throat. ] I wouldn't... mind... another one.
[ That's a yes. That's very much a yes. Despite how long it took to work up the strength to make a move, he wants to kiss Xingqiu a lot. Ever since that day he's been thinking about it too much. It's been distracting, even from his normal single-minded pursuit of evil spirits.
But he isn't sure how much is okay. He's never done this before, experience practically in the negatives.
The admission has even the tips of his ears turning red as he trudges forth, leading Xingqiu through the building's lobby and up the stairs to his room. It's quicker than waiting for the elevator, and he's only on the second floor.
Once inside his apartment, he kicks off his soaked shoes and peels off his waterlogged jacket, quickly moving to grab some towels to dry off with. Gently, he presses one into his friend's hands. ]
Here.

It surely does nothing to help his heated state, a couple of deep breaths are about as effective as the rain. Flushed as he is, he still feels content through his introduction to absolute embarrassment. His sheepish laughter drowned by the sound of rain is probably all the hint there is to his state.
Walking hand in hand, Xingqiu only closes the distance between them and if he frees his hand it is only briefly to hook his arm with Chongyun's. Now with confirmation, he feels it is only appropriate that he takes a turn at boldly progressing their relationship even if it's not entirely defined by words actions are enough, that kiss spoke volumes. Leaning against Chongyun as they journey through the rain has to be one of the most fulfilling moments of his life as silly as it may be but there is something pleasing in this simplicity.
Yet he can't completely bask in the glow of this happiness, he does recall their homeland, Liyue is so far away even when they are not aware of the distance. Perhaps his time here is meant to be a fulfillment of his contract, the last vestiges of childhood and carefree days.
Soon they're out of the rain, there is no reason for him to complain as they make their way up the stairs, and then he finds himself in Chongyun's apartment. He stands in the foyer for a moment taking everything in, before much like his friend he removes his shoes and sets them aside.
His gaze drops to the towel pressed against his hand but he doesn't close his fingers around it. His gaze fixes itself upon Chongyun's face before he speaks. ]
You like me.

It's not even a question. After that kiss and admitting that he would like another one, it's obvious, and yet Chongyun's face heats up with that direct statement all the same. It's a good thing that he's still chilled from the rain, or he may have swooned over into the chair due to sudden overheating. As it stands, he swallows thickly before softly agreeing with a noise. ]
En.
[ Those eyes that stare at him without wavering are too pretty. Like stars plucked straight from a brilliant night sky, or coins caught in dazzling sunlight. Chongyun meets them with his own pale blue, cheeks pink and biting his bottom lip, quickly finding himself overwhelmed by Xingqiu's gaze.
Too much. Too much. Since Xingqiu doesn't take the towel, all the exorcist can do is take it upon himself and loop it over his friend's head to dry his hair. He rubs gently, squeezing water out.
It's easier to talk when Xingqiu's face is covered by towel. Which is why he finally speaks a proper sentence, still just as soft: ]
I like you.
no subject
Yes, he will continue teasing Chongyun, this is just a new angle to work with.
The smile doesn't waver, that is until he finds his face covered by a towel. If briefly, for an instance he flails his arms about but they only settle when the exorcist speaks. While confirmation isn't needed, it certainly left him with a pleasant warmth that settles in his chest after a deep sigh. Chongyun might as well have said hand in hand, I want to grow old with you.
Slowly he raises a hand to catch Chongyun's, it's only on the second attempt that he succeeds which takes a bit of skill when he can't see what he is doing. Once the exorcist's hand is in his grasp he shakes his head to the side in an attempt to uncover his face. He doesn't quite manage it completely but he can peak out enough to see his friend's face. ]
Dear Chongyun, today and always. No matter where you journey, I'll be forever at our side.

Blinking away the dampness burning at his eyes, the exorcist nods, rubbing his lips together as he clutches Xingqiu's hand. It takes a few thick swallows before he's able to speak again. When he does, his voice is a bit scratchy and softer than usual, reflecting the emotion that continues to clutch in his chest. ]
And I'll be at yours.
[ He isn't as verbose as Xingqiu ... but he hopes that his friend can sense how serious he is about this. How much it means to him. How much Xingqiu means to him. Thankfully, he knows that his friend knows him well, and the fact that he isn't verbose doesn't matter. ]

His clothes remain soaked, his socks a sopping mess. It's uncomfortable, so after a second he offers something of an awkward smile as he stands there making his discomfort clear. ]
Am I free to take my pick of your wardrobe?
[ Even he doesn't have to guess that choices are limited but he would make due. It's only for one evening so that they can spend but a little more time together. Besides, there are snacks waiting for the two of them. If Xingqiu's discomfort doesn't prompt Chongyun to offer him a change of clothes then perhaps the translucency of wet white fabric does. The shirt he wears does little to hide what lays beneath the cloth, the problem further exacerbated by the chill that runs through his body after traveling through the rain. The textile does little to hide perky pink buds. ]

Of course you are.
[ Chongyun glances back to his friend with a little smile, gaze falling down to his chest for a moment to take in the state of his soaked clothing.
... 👁👄👁
His eyes shoot back up to meet Xingqiu's gaze. No, he must not look down. Can't look down. Because his shirt is white and now soaked, in the light of the room he can clearly see his ni ... nip... nipples ...
Chongyun stalks over to his closet door and flings it open with way too much strength. He may have confessed his feelings, but he certainly can't ogle Xingqiu's wet chest and pink nipples like some kind of shameless creep.
As expected, the exorcist doesn't really keep much in the way of clothes. Even here in Hell he wears his uniform, comfortable in what he knows. He had spruced up today very much on purpose, but he hadn't really picked out the pieces himself, letting the girl at the store go wild with what she thought was cute. The rest of the clothes Xingqiu has to pick from are things like t-shirts and sweatpants, an oversized hoodie, some basketball shorts, a few things he had picked up or had been given to him when working shifts in some of the textile shops in Tamamo territory. ]
Come pick something.
[ And put those nipples away. ]
no subject
Unsurprised by what little choice there is to have, he begins riffling through the few garments available to him. Finally, he settles on a hoodie and some sweatpants. He ends up picking them off their hangers himself. ]
I'll go get changed. Perhaps in the time that I am gone, you too should seek to get out of those wet clothes.
[ It's sound advice, despite his condition, it didn't make Chongyun immune to illnesses that were aggravated by the cold. That rain, despite the proximity to summer months, was chilling. Already he felt another shiver run through him.
That said, he tries to get Chongyun's attention once more but his friend's continual refusal to look at him causes Xingqiu to search for a place to change away from the other boy and out of his line of sight on his own. It's how he ends up locking himself in Chongyun's room. It doesn't take long to undress and slide warm dry clothes in the place of what he previously wore. It almost meant he was left only wearing those two pieces.
Xingqiu doesn't immediately exit Chongyun's room, rather he makes a comparison of how these clothes fit him and he wonders how they settle on his friend's body. He had to pull the sweatpants strings taut before they would stop sliding off his waist and hips.
A moment later, he would finally step out expecting Chongyun to be changed already. ]

His wet clothes are quickly peeled off and hunt on a hanger to dry off some. The drenching may have been for the best given the butter stains; he sighs, studying the damage for a little longer than he should. These clothes hadn't been cheap, so he hopes that the butter will come out.
Lingering over the poor state of his clothes is exactly why Chongyun is not dressed when Xingqiu comes out. He has his sweatpants on, but he's shirtless, showing off his muscular frame. Because his normal over-jacket is loose, it's easy to forget that he's pretty built beneath those cotton white layers.
He glances over at Xingqiu and nods. Good, they fit. Their sizes aren't too different, but Xingqiu is definitely a bit slimmer than him. Naturally, he thinks absolutely nothing of his own shirtless state. ]
Comfortable? You can pick something else out if not.
no subject
Not that he doesn't appreciate what he saw, a glimpse is enough for him, his attention is quickly diverted somewhere else to anything within the space they're in. It's unsurprising to know how fit his friend is, Xingqiu is well aware that Chongyun is diligent with his training. Yet, there is a difference between them that he can't ignore.
A muscular sturdy frame gained from hard work and martial arts training; supplemented by years of travel. Chongyun is a well-built boy. ]
This will do.
[ With his reply leaving his lips he is going to hurry past his friend, with his arms crossed. No, he is not going to look at him again. Once is enough he reminds himself. Although maybe there is nothing to be embarrassed about. He'll ruminate on that thought later. There is a kitchen and he was promised snacks. ]
closes my eyes @ my typos
And, importantly: tea. Chongyun will have to wait for his to go cold but a hot cup should help warm Xingqiu right up. First thing, he puts on the electric kettle to boil water.
As for snacks … he did buy a few pastries just yesterday. Nothing big; he puts out a small assortment of cookies and mini rolls onto the table for his friend to take whatever he likes. The rolls have a few fillings, like jam and chocolate, and the cookies are normal flavors like short bread, sugar, and almond.
There. Warm tea and snacks. That certainly shows he’s boyfriend material, doesn’t it? ]
Here, have some.
prt sc
Instead, he remains still as he listens to Chongyun rummage through the kitchen in what he assumes to be a search for snacks. Fine, he can't win this one but it doesn't mean he has to settle his gaze on Chongyun.
Which is what does immediately the moment he whirls around to face his friend.
Well, damn. That's just how things are going to go. A sigh escapes as he relents to interacting with a shirtless Chongyun. Finally, he settles at the table where the spread of snacks is available. His right hand hovers over the choices until finally, he picks out a sugar cookie which he is quick to start nibbling on. ]
