A while. They keep us too busy for anything else. As if that would erase our being here.

[Majima with his many activities, Emily with her endless work. it affords less time to be themselves than one might actually like.

they won't be sentimental enough to say they missed him, but they did, and they fall into step easily enough beside him.]

I'm only surprised you haven't broken out more. This place...it was meant for us.

[ He inhales smoke deeply for a moment, then lets it drift out of his open mouth. A place for him? Truthfully, he's not much of an extrovert. He could spend a thousand years asleep in a warm vat of sake and be just as satisfied. Just replace 'warm vat of sake' with Majima. He is a cozy container to curl up inside. ]

What should I do with myself? Claim the sewers in the name of the Uwabami?

[ He snorts a little laugh. ]

He has begun to indulge in the world more, I hardly need to prod him. He is stoked warm under me.

I envy you, in that. It seems I'll need to push the fledgling from the nest. Yours has more sense, to engage in the world at hand.

[they're not terribly concerned, though. they have all the time they need to gently pull on the strings that will lead to the best performance, or she'll struggle to remain human, suspended in all the agony that brings. it is what it is, and Hibiki thinks it will be marvelous in the end.]

[ He contemplates this lazily, ashing his cigarette in a smooth motion. There are things that he and Majima have 'discussed' that he would not share with anyone. Pacts that were made in their interior world where no one else will ever go. ]

These 'yakuza' are simple creatures. They are the yokai of their world, the wild and uncontrolled forces that make the lives of 'decent folk' more difficult.

[ Inhale. Exhale. ]

I merely gave him something he wanted.

[ Power, the ability to fight back against the world encroaching on him. He will never again face an enemy alone. He won't have to cower like a katagi any longer. He has the mettle to show Toraguma and the other oni. He will represent the Uwabami gloriously. ]

The rest is his own doing. He's much more spirited than his former masters could break in to their liking.

[they hum contently, taking in the answer and rolling it around in their head before they lean closer, that knife sharp curiosity in their eyes again.]

And what do you want, Joku? To nestle inside that body now it's the right shape to hold you, and while away your time?

[it's not asked to judge, or to measure. just to know, as if Hibiki was any better - wisdom stretched and twisted until it came out in the exact shape they preferred today.]

And I will snap my fangs from time to time, to remind his enemies that I am yet here.

[ He purses his lips into a ring, blowing out a long stream of smoke. ]

Much of him is mine, he could be made to serve as a vessel for a very long time.

[the little laugh that comes from their throat is half breathed out, vaguely reminiscent of a crow's call.]

If that is so, then I suppose there is nothing for it. I shall have to set my own plans similarly. You're likely to get in enough situations where you'll need my advice.

[that, and they might be fond. just enough to keep hanging around, to let him come close and share their warmth. whatever they want to say, though it's obvious enough in the right light.]

[ He takes their hand, stopping and pulling them into the circle of his arms. He's laughing, like he usually is, smelling of smoke and sake like he has for thousands of years. ]

We'll live a long time, my bird.

[ They have survived what befell Hakagemachi where many others did not. Their friends. Their family. He nuzzles into their hair and thinks about it only a little. He isn't one to dwell. ]

[instead of some witty remark, they just turn their head, reaching up to fit their hand to his face and kiss him, swallowing that laughter with their own lips. not overly sweet, not tonight, but enough to speak their gladness that he's here at all. survival is a difficult enough game to play, all the more so being alone.

all this, tonight, the dim bustle of the streets and the way he smells, it's familiar enough to be grounding. to be well. they'll find their place again here, and laugh the whole way.]
