1. WELCOMING COMMITTEE

The influx of Lost Souls means the factions need to have a little welcoming party of sorts. The leaders of each faction each send a message to their new recruits, telling them to meet at their respective headquarters.

The Shuten Clan directs their new recruits to the Arena. There’s plenty of food and booze to go along with the exhibition matches from the toughest fighters they’ve got. Enjoy the view or get involved in an arena fight, if you’re feeling spicy. If bloodsport isn’t your cup of tea, there’s a number of gambling games to partake in, too – don’t worry, your money isn’t at stake here, unless you want it to be.

The Tamamo Clan recruits are sent to the brothel Mizukume. Hosts of all sorts are there to fill your every need. If you’re not one to be doted on, there’s also exotic dancers in every state of undress for you to look at. You may be tasked with being a host or a dancer yourself. If you’re not in the mood for that, there’s plenty of food from Tamamo-controlled restaurants to eat and seemingly endless drinks. The drinks may or may not have a little something extra in them, so check the labels carefully.

The Sutoku Alliance meets at the nightclub Konoha. It’s truly a celebration with an enormous amount of fast food from every joint in their district and an equal amount of cheap drinks. Sing your heart out with live band karaoke – don’t worry about them not knowing your song, they seem to have a depth of knowledge beyond this world. Once that settles down, there’s plenty of dancing to do or you can be a wallflower, whatever suits your mood.

The Department of the Enma meets at a meeting room on the top floor of Kaigo no Bou. The room is uncomfortably opulent and wouldn’t be out of place in a Heian imperial court. Fine silk tapestries cover the walls, richly lacquered wood is inlaid with gold, and it all feels like it was decorated by someone with more money than taste. There’s fine food and even finer drink available. Various multi-armed youkai play in a jazz band, playing their instruments in a much more complicated manner than strictly necessary. Stretch your legs and dance. Take a peek out the window for a bird’s eye view of the city. If the interior is too stuffy for you, escape to the roof for some fresh air – just be careful not to fall off.

2. PARTY TIME

After everyone’s had their fill of food, drink, and entertainment: the party isn’t over. They’re told to make their way to Konoha with the instruction to show their faction’s pride. That’s a careful way to tell them to raise hell. Upon arrival, all recruits are provided with an advance on their pay by The Enma. Food is provided by the Shuten Clan, a variety of all sorts of meaty foods. Drinks are provided by the Tamamo Clan, but be wary because some may have that special Tamamo kick to them (read: aphro). It’s technically a neutral meeting place, but there’s almost certain to be a fight sooner or later. Entertain yourself, meet the other factions, and raise some Hell.

Yeah! It's been great so far for me! [ day happily bounces in his chair - oh stars, the poor piece of furniture is creaking with distress at these turn of events - and nods with enthusiasm, his winglets fluttering in joy as he happily chatters away. ] -I love meeting new people, learning new names. It was one of the biggest draws for me! It's pretty fun learning the others here.

Buuuut... [ he pauses, seemingly thoughtful now that something occurs to him. ] If you want, we can sneak out to somewhere more quiet for a bit when you're ready? It wouldn't hurt to have a break from all the noise and bustle.

Been meaning to let my legs get a stretch before the joints start to lock up! [ a bit of a truth but also as much as an excuse to let junpei know that day is willing to accompany him so he doesn't stand out when leaving the room at the height of activity.

much as day enjoys observing the others here, simply soaking up the idle chatter and taking note of who is around and what they're doing, he doesn't mind skipping out for it if junpei needs to have an excuse or chance to get away from it all, even for a little while. ]

[ Junpei winces at every bounce, expecting the chair to collapse at any second.

When Day offers an excuse to leave, he can’t hide the way his face lights up. He had been nervous to attempt to leave by himself, but maybe if he’s accompanied they can achieve it. There were definitely some points scored in Junpei’s mind for the other for this selfless act.

He quickly starts to shovel as much of the food he’d taken into his mouth before standing up. His mouth is still full when he speaks. ]

Leff go!

Sure! [ the chair is no doubt rejoicing over these turn of events too as day is quick to stand up from his chair, nodding in agreement to get going now.

while there are some looks are sent their way as they head out of the room, day's size - and the fact he's been there for so long, hitting up others now and then in his attempts to make friends or acquaintances - the attention doesn't longer much and the two are able to leave to somewhere more quiet, more easy on the nerves as the noise and bustle fades in the background.

day stretches out his limbs and shakes out his winglets, happy in his own way to get out of there. he forgot how stiff his joints can get- ]

So- How are you settling in so far? [ he looks over to junpei, his expression curious and genuinely concerned on how the other guy has been doing since their arrival. ] I've been doing mostly gopher work so I've been feeling pretty restless... Hoping you've been doing more exciting stuff!

Exciting ... well, I guess I can’t call anything boring here.

[ It’s been more or less the same. Small tasks, especially considering he hasn’t got much in the way of abilities. Things they think a basic, nonathletic human can handle. Some insultingly easy if he’s honest. ]

I know they’re going to ask more dangerous things of us eventually. There’s no way we’re going to get these big rewards they’re promising just by fetching supplies.

[ He looks up at the other, expression darkening. There’s a moment of hesitation as he considers if he should even ask the question he wants to before curiosity wins out over politeness. ]

Day ... have you ever killed anyone?

[ day freezes up when he hears the question.

since arriving here, day has always made it clear that he's a lively and active sort of individual. he moves his helm a lot. he fidgets. he allows his winglets to reveal his feelings that he knows he should be keeping under wraps. it's how he is and it's something he never really thought to stop.

but the question has him stilling to the point of motionless now, falling quiet when he was, a mere moment ago, chatty and bright and chirpy. his optics go as so far to dim when memory files pop up, replaying key moments, certain words with a clarity he wishes he didn't have at times. ]

Um- [ he continues to flounder but he answers. eventually. haltingly. looking apologetic all the while to junpei. ] ... Kind of? Maybe? [ he pauses for a second before he looks away, as if afraid to see junpei's reaction when he finally says, ] Yeah. I have.

I- I could have saved him. I could have done better to keep him from dying but... If I had tried hard enough than he would be around and he's not so. Yeah.

[ he laughs now. it's weak and shaky, nervous as heck, but he seems to be doing his best to bounce back. day wonders why junpei is asking such a question but, in a way, he's a little relieved now.

better to have this out in the open sooner rather than later, right? he has a way of making day think harder than usual and day finds himself not minding it. ] At the very least, I promised myself I'll never do that again, no matter what. No matter how desperate I was or how dire it got, that's going to be a line I'll ever cross again.

But... Do you think we'll have to go through those sort of lengths while we're here? Against them? Against us?

[ the idea of hurting junpei or ms. dyer or chongyun makes him blanche, visibly so. ]

[ At first, Junpei looks quite surprised when the response isn’t just a quick and scandalized ‘no’. Then he hears the full explanation and his expression softens. It really wasn’t the type of scenario he’d had in mind at all when he asked the question, and frankly he doesn’t think it counts as actually killing someone. Or at least it doesn’t seem as if Day is implying he put the person in the position of dying in the first place?

There’s not even a sliver of doubt in Junpei’s mind about the question posed to him, however. He looks Day right in the eyes, completely blunt. ]

Absolutely.

[ Eye contact is broken a beat later as he favors looking at the ground instead. The other opened up to him, so it’s only fair he does the same. Slipping his hands into his pockets he speaks in a low tone. ]

I tried to kill someone. The only reason I didn’t succeed was that someone interrupted me ... and I can’t decide if I regret my actions or not. If I do, it’s not out of any sympathy for the victim, so does it really matter?
