I think I've have less problems if the latter were true.

The interpretation of 'having wings' usually does mean freedom, but in this case it might be the opposite.

Curious way to feel about it.

To be oppressed from being winged. Perhaps I have. I know what it's like to have them clipped and to be caged. Or to have a hunter release their hawks in the hopes of catching and crippling their prize.

A lot of that was long ago at this point, and probably isn't quite the same feeling as you have.

Although caterpillars can be beautiful as well. In fact, if I had to pick one for you... I'd say maybe the white-blotched heterocampas? They're one of the few caterpillars that can be purple.
