March 2022 Mini Event

The Night Parade is fast-approaching and each faction will be busy with their own preparations.

1. SHUTEN CLAN

The Celestial Phoenix Casino, a fairly popular casino in the Shuten territory, is overdue on its protection money. This money is sorely needed for parade preparations. Unfortunately, the casino has decided it doesn't need to pay up because they've hired some new unaffiliated muscle. Neither the manager nor their new muscle are the type to listen to reason, so be prepared to exert some intimidation and force to convince these new bodyguards to take their business elsewhere.

The brute squad working for the Celestial Phoenix seems to be made up of several different youkai. Some of them are more human looking than others, but you'll notice no Oni. Even independent Oni wouldn't dare turn against the Shuten Clan. Even lacking in Oni, these thugs are armed to the teeth, swinging several deadly weapons and even a few firearms. This could get rough, so be prepared for the worst. Take the gangsters protecting the Celestial Phoenix out or convince them it’s not worth it.

Once inside, you'll discover that the owner, in a panic, has locked himself inside the casino's value with the protection money owed. This might take some doing to get open...

2. SUTOKU ALLIANCE

The Kappa want to be left alone and the Daitengu has asked Sutoku Alliance members to assure their wishes are respected. Members are tasked with convincing people to stay away from the Kappa's riverside facilities by whatever means necessary. Of course, you may want to take a look for yourself to see what they’re being so secretive about. That’s not recommended, if you don’t want to get into trouble.

It’s not just strangers who are nosy, though. Retinues from both the Shuten and Tamamo clans are making an appearance and asking why the inspections are taking so long. Why are the Kappa dragging their feet? The Alliance prefers to avoid direct violence, so it's up to you to talk to these clan captains in a way that convinces them to leave the Kappa alone.

If you're curious enough to dive deeper into the Kappa's business, however, even your Alliance membership isn't going to keep you safe. The Kappa themselves seem to disappear from sight the further into the sewers you go, as if invisible. Preventing yourself from being spotted by a security camera or a patrolling Kappa is almost impossible. Cover your faces, stick to the shadows, and you might just notice that... they’re building something down there.

Something for the Parade? Who knows? But it’s definitely not decorations or a float...

3. DEPARTMENT OF THE ENMA

The parade route for the Night Parade needs to be "cleaned up". The Department is tasked with getting the low level street gangs and squatters to clear out. The homeless population will resist and may not be so easily persuaded to give up their spots. Your best bet is to offer them food, booze, or shelter for the night. The street gangs will assuredly fight back. Use your strength or your wits to get the job done.

The gangs will not typically be that tough, most don’t want to step up to the Department's goon squad too heavily lest they wind up in a cell for the rest of their lives. Still, some might be hopped up on encouraging substances and try to escalate. Don’t worry, though. You have the authority of the Enma on your side! Don’t think they will get away with waving a weapon in your face.

The homeless, though, lack strength or weapons. They are more fueled by desperation to keep their spots. Winter hasn't been kind to them, after all, and they don’t have much respect for the Enma's authority. Their belligerent behavior is loud, and often violent despite their absence of means to properly defend themselves. At worst, they’ll probably try to use biological warfare. Don’t ask what's in those bottles...

4. TAMAMO CLAN

Parade costumes need to be designed, crafted, modeled, and then likely mended knowing the rough and tumble yokai. The textile shops and tailors of the area need Tamamo Clan members to help them out. Costumes vary from extremely ornate to extremely sexy. These costumes need to merge form and function, for the Tamamo clan parade marchers that means they need to be able to sell their specific wares while wearing them. (wink wonk)

None of the costumes are floor ready and the shop bosses urge you that these cannot be seen by the public until they are ready. This won’t stop some peeping toms and tammies from trying to scope out the goods. Most of the voyeurs are spying for perverted reasons, but some are from shops outside of Tamamo’s influence trying to copy the designs for themselves. Either way, Tamamo Clan members aren't expected to be just pretty faces. So rough’em up.

5. TASTE TEST (ALL FACTIONS)

For those less interested in their faction's work, the restaurants in the Tamamo territory also need help finalizing their menu offerings for the Night Parade. Taste testers and creative cooks wanted! These aren’t just any dishes though and may have some interesting effects. One may be so spicy that everything burns, your face turns red, and you need to cool yourself off. Or maybe your dish is so good that you need to take a nap – it doesn't matter where you are, you'll just fall asleep right on the spot. Another possibility is a dish that gives you unstoppable energy – literally. It will make you want to get up and go and never stop moving. If you stop moving, it may cause a bigger problem.

[ He shifts his gaze slightly to the kappa that chokes before returning his gaze back to Nehan. His lips twist into a scandalous smile, like he may laugh a little.

Pulling his chopsticks back, he drags his tongue along the tips of them before returning to his cheap meal. ]

I'm pleased to know that they satisfy. [ He stirs his rice some. It seems like he won't be able to get the man to explain what is going on, but he doesn't really mind it. He did get patched up after his run-in with a few gang members, after all, so he is grateful. ]

Oh. Would you like a gift? [ He sets the bento box down on his legs as he digs around his suit's pockets. A second later, he produces a watch that he lies on the bench between them. ] It's not the best, but it is something to pawn for a little extra bit of coin.

[ And he takes another bite of rice. ]

[a gift, huh. nehan takes the watch and turns it this way and that. he wont speak until he's finished with the snack in his mouth, but that doesn't stop him from assessing the worth of the item.

worn leather, steel made to look dark, perhaps to mimic more expensive materials. at least it's unscrtched save for the leather strap, but it looks like it's been replaced at least once. oh well. he straps it onto his arm anyway.]

If I'm successful, you're invited to dinner at my place, my treat. And if you're lucky, even more. [just to make that kappa run.]

[ He leans forward a little as he listens to the kappa run away -- the slapping of their shoes against the pavement as they flee. ]

Wonder if he's disgusted because I'm a human?

[ Leaning back, he stirs his rice yet again. It just doesn't look stirred enough to warrant eating, or maybe he's just delaying the inevitable. ]

But dinner at your place? I look forward to it. [ It probably would look better than his. Soma is presently living like a deranged serial killer -- a cheap bed, small dresser drawer for clothes, and little else in the ways of furnishings. At least, he can have his suits look nice and give a different impression of how he lives... ]

[nehan snorts. the kappa doesn't matter, he just wanted to be alone with soma, for more security.]

I'm sure it would be better than the rice in that box. Clearly you're not interested in it. [does he not like rice? or perhaps... that rice looks a little underdone. a little mushy, and nehan decides he'll cook better.]

Any special request?

It could be better.

[ He can, at least, admit that much about what he has been making himself eat. ]

Special request, hm? [ Something classic maybe? His lips quirk into a little smile before he throws out: ] What about omurice?

What are you, a child? [as if nehan didn't have very decadent omurice not too long ago-- with wine, even.

still, the erune pets soma on the head.]

Fine, omurice for you. Don't say I never give you what you want.

[ He decides to reach out to rest his hand lightly on Nehan's knee, giving it a little squeeze. ]

I would never say something so untrue.

[nehan gives him a smile. to some nosy bastard trying to spy, if there are any, it looks pleasant. kind, caring, and all other sorts of adjectives meant for a smile given to a lover. but it really is not, it's borderline a sneer.

soma may not lie to him because of their agreement, but he knows the man is a liar through and through. they're both just like that.]

Because I spoil you.

[ His eyes soften as does his expression; it is a look of pure affection in response to the almost sneer he is given. ]

Well, someone needs to, because I am deserving of it.

[ He chuckles as he withdraws his hand finally. ]

I kid, I kid. [ Because his prize is ahead of him; he needs nothing else but what his contract will pay him. ] You know, you youkai are quite interesting. I've been learning as much as I can about your people... I suppose so that I can better love you.

[that, too was a bit much, and it's nehan's turn to place his hand on soma's knee to squeeze it. but this is a bit of a warning-- don't overdo it.]

I'm not sure you can find my kind in the books and library here. Then again... Jigoku-cho has a way of surprising you.

[meaning, nehan hasn't picked out what sort of youkai he wants to mimic yet. but there may be some sources of information that he hasn't gotten to yet.]

Fair enough.

[ He gives a little nod in turn, before continuing: ]

I've been told that the youkai here are much like our old occupations. They take the words that people say carelessly and use them against the speaker.

[ It's more of a little warning from what he's heard. ]

Something, something -- they eat the flesh and energy of others that aren't wary. I'm glad that the only energy that you devour is something we lose together.

[now nehan outright leers at soma.]

Who is to say that I don't eat humans? [he actually doesn't, that's disgusting, but soma has given him that tidbit-- more than that, in fact. a lot of information is found in these few lines, one only needs to read between them.] I am, of course, well-fed with you, but before you came along?

For instance... I could have had anything in my mouth.

I'm lucky not to be on the menu, then. [ A slight pause. ] Well, not that menu, anyway.

[ Still, he feels his information has been of some use. It seems wrong to him to only offer some soggy convenient store food for the care that he's been given. ]

But anything, hm? How scary... should I start to worry if I end up displeasing you?

You'll be fine. [he squeezes soma's knee again. not here, soma. nehan can think of things on the fly, but some details are better when well-thought out. they can discuss later over dinner.]

I give chances. It just so happens that you have more chances than others.

Of course, I would.

[ A slight smile follows before he lets out a long, pained sigh. ]

Well, I should go see if what I did ensured that the garbage I was trying to keep away will stay away.

[ He pats his thighs, acting like some old man that has to do some annoying task. ] But I'll see you for dinner... tonight? [ Soma hesitates on the word, wondering if it really will be "tonight" or some other night. ]

Yes. [nehan lets go of his thigh, and pats him on the back.]

Don't get yourself ruined before you come tonight, all right? It's not interesting making discussion with an invalid.

[because they definitely will have a lot to discuss.]

Naturally.

[ He stands, letting out a long sigh. Leaning over, he gives Nehan's ear a quick peck. ]

"Discussions."

[ Soma keeps his laughter to himself as he picks up his partially eaten bento box. He heads to toss the garbage away before reaching into his suit jacket to pull a small switchblade out.

Busy, busy, busy. Off to work. ]
