I. Substory #3 Drifter Grifter

[He looks tiredly at the list of crimes of this grifter and for a moment he wonders if Bradley's out there stealing again? He's probably stealing, but is this specifically Bradley or just some idiot he doesn't have to care about?]

Okay, so what did this guy look like? Did he even have any information or was he just dining and dashing?

[Are there, for some reason, giant windows in your bathrooms? How is this guy getting out so easily?]

II. City of Rain, before hours
[Now more than Ever Nero's grateful to have his shop. An oasis of calm in the middle of the din of Jigokuchou. Of course, the quiet rule doesn't come into effect until the shop actually opens. Sometimes it is nice to be able to talk to his employees without having to write everything down on paper.

He has been cooking a little earlier than usual, but that might be because of the new hire. Bradley? Just somebody from home. At least it's very normal for Nero not to say much about himself.

He does send out a text to everyone who works there.]

Breakfast on Friday at 10 if you want to come early.

Oh. I guess it is.

[He's going to wander over to the kitchen area so he can peek in and see what it looks like.]

Don't go in there unless you're clean.

[It's a nice kitchen though, he could look into it if he sat at one of the cubicles that looked into the establishment.

It's clean and well maintained, pots and pans and other utensils easily within reach.]

[The temptation to knock stuff off the counter...but no, Lalli will be good and will stay out of the kitchen.]

I don't even know how to cook, I wouldn't go in there.

[Yes he would, he gets into trouble all the time.

But no, he'll sit down at one of the cubicles now. And he takes his time testing the seat too.]

This is a normal restaurant, isn't it? Not like the bars in the Tamamo territory.

It's a normal restaurant. We do have some wines for the dinner crowd.

When we're open, there's a silence rule in place. The rest of the city is so loud, this is the one place you can show up and get some quiet.

[For a given value of quiet. There's still the scrapes and clinks of glass, and the sound of cooking. But nobody's gonna talk to anybody in this space.]

Since you're here, what's your order?

[He actually looks interested when he hears that. This city is very loud, and he's always looking for quiet places.]

Okay, then I'll stay.

Do you know creamy salmon soup?

[Nero misses his City of Rain and it's Way Too Many Rules. So instead of porting all the rules, he ported the result. Silence within these walls from 11 to 11.]

I haven't made it before. Tell me about what goes into it.

[Does it stay silent with Bradley around now though?]

It's a cheesy soup with potatoes, onions, carrots, and salmon cut up and added to it.

[Not quite a recipe, but.]

[Bradley picks up deliveries and spends most of his time outside of the restaurant, thank you.]

Hmm... I could do somethin' like that.

[Guess it'll be the special of the day, since he's not just going to make one serving of a soup. Who does that?

He'll get out the ingredients, figuring he can taste it as he goes.]

Cheesy?

[No chatty wizards allowed inside, I see.

And you never know someone could make a whole line of 'soup for one' meals. It would be so much effort for one serving though.]

Mhmm. It's soup broth but it has butter and cheese in it. But it's not thick, it's still runny like soup is.

[Lalli, trying to describe a cream soup without being a chef.]

[ This seems like a cream soup to him? He doesn't think there's cheese in it, but maybe a lot of cream and butter. That might seem like cheese to somebody who didn't make it. Probably a seafood broth too, if it's salmon.

He'll start prepping the broth first, cream and butter, left to low simmer as he peels and cuts the rest of the ingredients. Can't go wrong with garlic.

He doesn't know about the dill, so that gets tragically left out. ]

[RIP to the dill, you will be missed. But it's fine Lalli is from a zombie deathworld so odds are they make soup with what's available, and dill might go missing sometimes.

Lalli will be good and won't go invade the kitchen, but he does watch from his spot at the booth. He has his phone and is texting people sometimes but at other times he'll holler directions over to Nero if Nero looks confused. Not that Lalli actually knows how to cook, but he can describe the soup at least.]

Bread with it too!

Two slices?

[ The good news is that he already had fresh sourdough. Some people (Bradley) like fresh toast in the morning.

He'll cut off two slices of bread for the soup.

It's starting to smell delicious and ready to eat. ]

Two is good.

[He's trying to be patient, but he does still have a cat inside of him. So he'll get up from the table and wander over to the doorway to watch more closely. He can smell it getting close to being done.]

[ He can stand at the doorway. It's only a problem if he walks in. ]

It's almost done.

[ He'll ladle out a generous helping for Lalli, two slices of bread on the side.

This has too much cream for him to want to eat it personally. ]

Yeah, I can smell it.

[He will be good and stay by the doorway. Poor Nero though, not eating the creamy soup.]

[He'll ladle a bowl out for Lalli and puts it on the desk he was sitting at.

It's better this way, he's still suspicious of all dairy.]

Eat up.

[Nero your CALCIUM

But it's fine, Lalli will go back over to the table and poke at the soup with a spoon, stirring through it and looking at it with a critical eye. Judging...judging...

But eventually he deems it to be safe, and he'll start eating. And it says something about the quality of Nero's cooking, that he keeps eating without complaining or stopping.]

[Well. If he's eating it, it means it's not terrible. He'll count this as a personal success. The stew isn't too hard to make either. Maybe he'll make it into special another day.]

[It would be a good special for today too, serve that soup and let people enjoy it.

Interestingly, Lalli finishes the soup entirely before eating the bread, without dunking the bread in the soup. That's just how he be.]

It's good.

An interesting way to eat bread and soup, but if it works for him that's the important bit.]
