[ That answer is not what Izō wanted to hear. He vastly prefers sake to anything else and the idea of drinking anything else after the annoyance he's dealt with is unpleasant. His expression is comically sour. ]

Yer fuckin' serious? [ No sake?? Does not compute. ] An' yer in a city that's fuckin' full of it. Jus' pick a bar an' ya should be able to get it.

[ He huffs. ]

Jus' not in this fuckin' place.

But don't you agree that alcohol tastes better with someone else's company?

[ he smiles. he was working on a patron's drink before izou stumbled upon here, so his magic is going to take care of that for him; various bottles begin hovering around him, pouring themselves into a wineglass as shylock adds the final touches to it by hand. ]

It's true that there are various bars in town that serve this traditional drink. But I'd much rather visit them with someone and make idle chatter with them than going off on my own. I'm not from any version of this world called Earth, if that clarifies anything.

[ Okay, maybe Shylock has his attention now. Izō tries not to look impressed by the display, but his curiosity is obvious. ]

I mean, do I look like a guy that cares who I drink with?

[ The answer is no. He drinks alone most of the time -- not that he minds company. A bar like this is definitely not to the tastes of the sort of hard drinker he and most of his drinking buddies are. ]

An' it don't clarify nothin'. I wandered in 'ere alone an' decided t' drink. What's that say 'bout me?

[ Don't answer that. ]

[ oh, he will answer that. shylock looks rather delighted at having to answer that rhetorical question too. ]

What it says about you is that you are lost, whether in a literal or metaphorical sense. Perhaps even both. If you are truly craving for sake, you would have turned tail by now and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

[ he finishes added the final touches, and the glass flies away towards a patron seated at the far corner of the establishment. ]

I could not offer you sake in this trying time, but I may be able to offer you a cheap Western alternative. Will you give it a chance regardless?

[ Izō does not seem pleased with Shylock answering the question. His expression turns sour once again -- he does not belong here and he's feeling that deeply. ]

Look, booze is booze. I'll drink whatever th' fuck it is so long as it'll get me drunk.

[breweries]

If you insist.

[ but instead of showing off his magical flair, shylock turns around to check the liquor cabinet behind him and selects a bottle of dry sherry. back when he was still working at various bars before he established hemlock, he'd heard all about alternatives to sake, so he may as well take advantage of that information with his rather choosy customer here.

he pours the sherry into the glass, silently placing it in front of izou. ]

[ Izō gives the glass a dubious look, but drinks it anyway. It's ... not the same, not unpleasant, but definitely not the same. He doesn't have the most discerning palette in the world, so he's going to drink it. ]

Eh...Ain't th' same. Rather drink whiskey'n this.

[ He's developed a taste for whiskey, at least. Maybe he should've said this sooner, but that'd make things too easy. ]

You could. But now you've drank more than one Western liquor. That's a lot of progres, if I do say so myself.

[ small steps, y'know. ]

Now, may I ask for your name if that's all right?

[heretic_blade]

[ Izō looks vaguely annoyed and rolls his eyes. Stop making him try things!! ]

Okada Izō, Shuten lieutenant. Who th' fuck are ya?

[ Pleasant. ]

[ but it's fun! also, hearing the familiar name causes shylock's eyes to light up as he takes a short bow. ]

The name's Shylock Bennett, partial lieutenant of the Tamamo Clan and the owner of this bar. And may I say that is an honor to have the Mr. Izou grace my humble establishment today. I've heard so many things about you already.

[ are they good? are they bad? who knows! ]

[ Now he's interested. There's only a handful of people that would talk about him and even fewer in a positive light. Izō looks extremely suspicious. ]

Oh yeah? What kinda things?

[ and shylock presses on with a gentle smile on his face. ]

Your sword has told me that you're a genius swordsman. That you kept fixing him no matter how much he broke, among other things.
