[ If it were anyone else, he'd get defensive and assume they were making fun of him. Izō hasn't made anyone proud; he just lets people down and disappoints them. Knowing that he actually made someone proud of him in a way that matters...He can't handle it.

Izō clings to him a bit longer before scrubbing at his face to hide his tears. It doesn't work -- he knows he isn't fooling anyone. ]

[ Of course he is, but it's so hard to just accept anyone being nice to him, even when he loves them. It's nearly impossible for him to let go of the idea that these relationships are transactional and only worth what they can get out of Izō. As time goes on, it's easier for him to accept it. ]
