August 2022 Event

MAIN NAVIGATION
Toraguma and Tenkohime were not exaggerating when they said that Sai no Kawara was bound to attract extraordinarily deep pockets. The Celestials are already familiar to the Lost Souls, but among the crowds of customers are humans and yokai of wealth that can only be calculated in the billions, and even trillions. Powerful executives have come out to play, the sort of power brokers that almost exist beyond faction politics, the tier who makes the most money out of the city's dealings.
The event has an air of class that is far beyond what the average Lost Soul will have ever imagined…
1. GAMBLING PROBLEM (1 POINT)
The main event comes in the form of the games. This is where the Shuten Clan shines, as they offer up a plethora of gambling opportunities for the rich and powerful to partake in. There might be a Lost Soul or two at the tables, if they're feeling particularly lucky. Buy-in to a game isn't cheap, but if you're low on cash, you can substitute a handful of stellar Stardust to the pot.
Western games like Poker, Blackjack, and Roulette share space with Eastern standards like Cee-lo and Cho-han. Shuten Clan dealers have been training hard for this moment. They have learned to cheat on behalf of the House to scrape as much from these high rollers as they can. Those Shuten attendants who win big for the House will be duly compensated for their fine efforts.
If you're very clever, or very lucky, you might just be able to secure quite a payout for yourself as a player too. Just don't get caught pulling any funny business. The Shuten Clan bouncers have also been training quite thoroughly for this event. If you're not one of the fabulously wealthy tycoons, the bouncers have little incentive to play nice with you.
Should fighting break out, there is an arena onsite. Bets are flying there, too. Are you willing to wager your own pretty face?
2. PLEASURE PALACE (1 POINT)
Tenkohime wasn't exaggerating when she called her turf in the newly renovated underground a palace. The attendants at the Palace of Sai greet their wealthy clientele warmly, and they have a host of wondrous and rare delights to offer. As a rare treat, the Lost Souls are encouraged to indulge in this decadence. If the prices make you choke, remember that a little bit of Stardust will go a long way this season.
Food and drinks are of the highest quality. Delicacies from across Japan and the world abroad have been prepared, including many dishes not even of the Earth as you might know it. Particular favorites from the drinks menu are:The pricey and fabulous drinks are just an encouragement. The Tamamo's best trained consorts are ready to offer their private services, usually in pairs. They have some Tanabata wishes of their own, and want to make them come true through their talents and skills. Not every encounter is sexual, some consorts simply wish to spend time with their clients and make them feel like the most important person in the world today. With the big price tags on their hours, the customer might very well be.
- Side Cars that have been made with cognac from a 300,000 yen bottle.
- Platinum Passions that have been made with L’esprit de Courvoisier; 800,000 yen per bottle.
- Eightfold Blessing is a captivating and aromatic mix considered to be Tenkohime's very own specialty. It grants the vigor to fulfill any desire; 1,000,000 yen a glass.
In addition to expensive meals, sex, and company, the Tamamo Clan also offers theater and performances. They have contracted with the highest caliber performers in the city, even those on loan from other factions. Dancers, musicians, and entertainers of all varieties are waiting in the wings to put on a show.
3. GOSSIP (1 POINT)
One of the performances gracing the stage in the Palace of Sai may seem familiar! The band Moonday played at the food truck festival last month. As it turns out, the lead singer -- a wolf girl named Ringo-chan -- is the daughter of one of the wealthiest executives within the Alliance's network of finance kings; Kaberou. She's run away from her restrictive life to rough it with her band. Big money is riding on convincing her to come home. There's another rumor floating around that the pirates attacking the supply lines have been putting pressure on Kaberou. Is he securing buyers for these pirated goods?
Rumors are flying: the kind of rumors that can bring riches or ruin. The Daitengu has commanded their people to keep their ears open. Do they happen upon a juicy lead? Do they find a way to reconnect Kaberou with his estranged daughter? Do they discover more about the pirates? Do tell, do tell!
Even the staff of the Enma Department will find lips much looser than usual around them. When you're this rich, you think you're above the standards of the law. There's plenty of conversation that might be of interest to the Department. In particular, one name does keep coming up...
It comes up when discussing Kaberou's dealings with these pirates, and how much of a wrench his daughter's negligence to the life has been for his business. It's spoken of in hushed tones, even by the Celestials. It is an ominous name: "Iron Bear"
4. TANABATA (2 POINTS)
The grand opening of the underground is the centerpiece of an otherwise familiar Tanabata celebration. Using the accumulated Stardust, the Tamamo Clan's onmyouji have collaborated with Kappa engineers and the Shuten Clan's resident blacksmith to create a truly wonderful spectacle for the festival.
Despite Sai no Kawara existing underground, the overhead sky is full of brilliant stars on display. It is a one-to-one recreation of the cosmic tapestry of the Milky Way streaking through the sky like the astral river from the Tanabata legend.
The stars Vega and Altair, also known as Orihime and Hikoboshi, are highlighted in the tapestry. They take form and dance together above everyone, they encourage the feelings of love to fill the air. Romantic love, platonic love, familial love: it doesn't matter. This is the product of peace, hard work, and cooperation. This is the dream of the Daitengu and their lieutenants. Dance to the music. Drink your fill. This is a celebration of love, and there's so much love here, for everyone.
Attendees are encouraged to write their wishes on the colorful talismans distributed. Bamboo trees decorate the central square, waiting to be draped with wishes. Even if you are not familiar with Tanabata, it will be easy to pick up on the ritual. The magic in the air tonight is incredibly strong, these wishes might even come true.
5. "WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE" (2 POINTS)
Late into the evening, the Daitengu takes to the stage. They welcome everyone and hope that they have had a good night. Toraguma and Tenkohime flank them, and each says a few words to the crowd. Then, Sutoku lieutenant Sakamoto is called up to the stage for the moment of truth.
Toraguma, regretfully, announces that Sakamoto has made good on his promises. The holes in their supply lines have been uncovered found, the black market is becoming less of a bleed on their finances, and the road to finding out who -- or what -- is causing the disruption is becoming clearer. The great oni will always honor a promise kept, and reaches out his hand to shake Sakamoto's in a gesture of gratitude.
The timing, as usual, is a little dramatic.
A group of shadowy figures wearing rough-spun gear storm the stage. Several of them snatch Ringo-chan from where she is waiting to perform and drag her away. Another lunges at Sakamoto with a make-shift sword of crude metal. Just before the blade can cut Sakamoto, the would-be assassin is stopped by Toraguma. With their wrist snatched and broken, the assassin screams out:
"We come on behalf of the Iron Bear, and we know who you are!"
In his rage and fury, Toraguma breaks the assassin's neck, slamming him down to the stage. He dies within moments, while the rest of the attackers flee. They've kidnapped Ringo-chan.
Sai no Kawara is quickly flooded with armed and armored officers of the Enma Department. They instruct everyone to remain calm. No one panic. The Enma himself has arrived, and he is going to start questioning everyone about what just happened. Who is the Iron Bear? What in hell do they want? It's time for some answers.
Well… As far as parties in Jigoku-cho go… this one could have been worse, yeah?

Tenshi Hinanawari | Touhou Project | Tamamo (OTA)
Normally, people who were losing weren't in this good of a mood. But, there was Tenshi, laughing up a storm as she shouted out "Cho!" or "Han!" while watching the shirtless fellow rattle the dice to get the crowd worked up. Why was she laughing up a storm? Well, because this was fun and she never got to do anything like this back home. She'd always wanted to go into one of these seedy places, covered in smoke and stale sake, with a hint of desperation. But oh no, she had a family who worked for monks to think about so obviously not. Well, she wasn't there, and she wasn't in Gensokyo, so she was going to live it up.
Tenshi had had the good sense, however, to come with a very specific amount of money. Never bet more than you were willing to lose, and she was likely to lose most of that today, because she had no head for gambling, but... "This is great isn't it? You ever been to one of these?" she said to the person next to her, utterly ignorant that they were taking her to the cleaners."
Actually, she probably knew. She just didn't really care too much. It was fun!
2) The Pleasure Palace (Working Girl)
Tenshi was not here simply to enjoy herself. For all that Tenkohime had said that they were definitely free to indulge, and she was indulging in her own vices? She also was kind of in the dog-house. Look, she'd wanted the stardust to get some of those nifty potions from the bunny. And those birds had it coming, so she'd beat them up for their lunch money. So what. Still, she'd gotten off with a slap on the wrist, really, and now she was supposed to be showing off some of the skills they were teaching her. Security was covered, she was assured. They didn't need a bouncer.
Which meant, here she was with a bottle of sake in front of her as she started to mix one of those high dollar drinks for the customer and smiled at them with feigned interest. "Oh, please. Do tell. I'd love to hear more," she said to them as she batted her eyelashes and kept their attention just long enough to make sure they were happy with their drink. She glanced to the side as they walked off, breathing out a little. Feigning interest was exhausting with these clients. Seeing someone else slip up, she turned and kept the fake smile on.
"Oh, are you enjoying the evening's festivities? Maybe something to freshen up your mood and wet your whistle? Wouldn't want to go on stage with a parched throat, would we?" Please be nobody she knew...
3) The Arena
She was done with her stint at the party. She was almost out of cash, but she had just enough for an entry fee for what she really wanted. She'd heard all about it at the betting parlor. They were taking bets on fights, because of course they were. So, she was all too eager to make her appearance at the Arena and buy in on a bet for herself to win.
Standing across the arena floor from her competition, she was flashing them the most playful, polite grin while she rested a blunted steel blade up and against her shoulder. "You'll go easy on little old me, won't you?" she said with a laugh, that grin anything but innocent. In the back of her mind, she remembered not to reveal the Sword of Hisou. There were celestials at this event. She couldn't risk them realizing that she had that thing, and that it had re-awoken in her hands once more. So she'd be going with her hand to hand skills instead of too much magic. But, with her? That was enough.
4) We Know Who You Are!
Ever observant and watchful, Tenshi'd missed the whole thing go down. She might have been yawning through most of it. Hey, look, there was a crowd and she'd been told that the security was handled. When the Iron Bears or whatever showed up and caused the ruckus, she was quick to get back in, but she barely saw what happened, which meant that she really didn't have much to say.
Growling over at the Enma talking to her, she just shrugged and gestured. "They went that way with someone in tow. I can't exactly follow them through a crowd." Were you the Enma trying to get something useful out of this girl, or just one of the other bystanders trying to be at least a little helpful.
5) Wildcard
--Go for it! Anything you want. PM first or just get started.
2
Go on Tenshi, be the one that pushes her over the edge!
It's unfortunate that Enty still recognizes her. "Oh, hello again."
Smiles~! "A drink? Hm, I'm not sure if I can afford anything here. Maybe if you have something not quite as pricey on hand... but yes, to answer your question, I am enjoying myself. How about you? Have you been?"
no subject
"How've you been holding up so far? I haven't seen you as much lately." That had a lot to do with how much trouble she'd been getting into, which was why she was here instead of out having fun. Bah, responsibilities were a pain. "Today's... not my favorite, but I've gotten to see a few people perform, so that's been nice." And she'd had the good grace not to bring her singing voice into this equation. There might have been a few karaoke employees very grateful for that.
no subject
She said, still keeping a tab on her spendings and earning from the evening thus far. She had made a decent amount from the casino, but she would rather not spend most of it in one sitting. There are still other things she had to deal with first.
"I've been doing alright. All things considered, it could be worse, it could be better." It could be infinitely worse. Luckily it hasn't been thus far, which was good enough for her! Keeping things afloat, even if just barely, meant that things would keep running until safe harbor was reached. And after being here for a bit, she felt at least somewhat stable enough to continue her voyage thus far with a bit more gusto. "Oh? Did you have any favorites yet?"
no subject
"Oh, it can always be better. That's just part of life, though you seem to be doing ok by yourself," she said, making idle chit chat before laughing. "I'm trying not to pick favorites among the performers. Wouldn't want to go picking one new friend over another, now would I? Only thing I definitely won't be doing is giving people an earful of my singing voice."
Nobody needed that.
no subject
"Yes, life really is just like that, isn't it." She hums, smiling and listening to Tenshi talk happily. It was kind of calming, in its own way. "I'd argue that you wouldn't necessarily be chosing one, new, friend over another. More that you're simply expanding your friendships."
There was a tilt of her head following it. "I'm also sure you have a nice voice."
no subject
"It's not that bad, but I'm way too energetic on stage for this kind of thing. And besides, I keep getting told the music I sing at Karaoke isn't appropriate." She had a bad knack for singing the kinds of songs Aerosmith or the Chili Peppers sang, which meant they were heavy on innuendo.
no subject
She said with some amusement and a light blush over the wink. "Isn't energetic part of the performance, though?"
She thought it was. Given just how... well, how energetic, some of the people on stage could get. "Oh, but your choices might not be considered appropriate, even here?"
no subject
She snickered. "Well, I hear that the songs are kind of dirty. But I can't help it if so much music that I find at karaoke's dirty, can I?"
no subject
She shifts her gaze from the stage and gives Tenshi a small smile. "Still, you're right. I suppose you can't help it. You seem rather nonchalant about it."

He leans against the bar. He already looks like he's been having some fun tonight, shirt untucked and tie missing by this point, some crusted blood around his temple from a jaunt in the arena. The mood is high.
"Wet my whistle?" he repeats. He knows what it means, he's just taking it as a double-entendre, given the local digs. "Sure! I'll have whatever your specialty is."
no subject
"Well, sailor," she said, gesturing to the brandy and giving him a crooked eyebrow. "I'm going to be real nice while the pit boss is watching and give you two choices. You want the best street car you'll have in your life, but that you'll be working off for the next week?" A low chuckle. "Or you want one hell of a kick in the head that won't leave you penniless?"
She... uh... meant the drink to be clear, not the literal kick in the head. Someone really needed to work on her phrasing.
no subject
"Depends," he says. "What's the deal with the Street Car? It worth the price?"
no subject
"A taste to show you the difference," she said with a wink. "Two snorts. You start with this one." She gestured to the basic stuff. The fact that they even had that in stock was just proof that after folks got drunk enough they'd buy anything, but it was damned good for this.
no subject
"Right, so it's just cheap vodka," he agrees. "Now let's try the good stuff."
Gimme gimme.
no subject
"The thing is?" She gestured to it as she offered it to drink. "This is the good stuff normally, but there's something more to that street car. They mass produce this. The cognac in that? It's aged. The year's old, older than they bother to keep track of. It gets aged with things that make the flavor complicated. It's like all those arguments you hear from someone who says 'No, no. Not this year, you want that year. The harvest was better.' The more you try it, sip it, the more you can tell."
She leaned in to whisper. 'honest, if you are paying that much money? Don't get that cognac in a street car. Get it in one of those snifter glasses. I saw a rich snob doing that and just sniffing it before he sipped. Guy practically shuddered with delight.' Because honestly! It was a Hors d'Age! Waste to put that in a mixed drink. That's why you made VS.
(*cough* apologies. I may have once been aa scotch snob in a former life.)
4
But she waited until the Enma had deemed this an avenue not worth pursuing any longer and moved on, before she raised her voice.
"Tenshi-san? Are you all right?"
no subject
"Oh, hi Haru. Fine... fine... missed another good fight. One of these days I'll be in the right place at the right time," she muttered, walking up to her. "You alright?"
no subject
That had looked far too chaotic to get caught up in, but this was definitely a competent woman who probably took on more than just bird familiars, given the opportunity. Hadn't she heard directly from her that she enjoyed that sort of thing?
"I'm a little glad you didn't get involved... but yes, I'm fine. I'm just waiting my turn to be questioned."
Unfortunately.
no subject
"Good, glad you're not hurt at all. And don't worry about the Enma. They're just bugging people. I don't think most of us know anything really. It was all kind of a mess."
no subject
"All the same, I'll do my best to answer succinctly, so as not to waste both their time and mine."
no subject
"They'll be putting an effort into getting her back safe and sound. You might get the chance to help soon enough. And don't worry about the cops too much. They've got plenty. You're not wasting their time, at least certain not anymore than I am."
no subject
Haru wasn't fond of cops. Some? Some were okay. And others were corrupt and abusive of their power and didn't deserve to call themselves any kind of upright figure. She's withholding judgment for now, if just because she doesn't know too much about how the Enma faction operates yet.
"But I hope you're right... that I'll be able to help with locating her."
no subject
"If you need backup... well, you know me. I'm usually raring for a fight. It being a good cause is an added bonus." She shrugged. "I get the feeling that there's someone outside the city who's trying real hard to cause trouble. One set of pieces at a time. At first, I thought the Haniwa were it. Now I think this whole thing's still a lead up."
There was a moment of thought. "It's different from youkai. Youkai get pissed off. something happens. They get over it. They don't keep plotting like this. It feels... like it's actually a villain?" Was that how she'd put it? Well, in her eyes, most of the youkai back home weren't actually bad guys. They were just idiots and insensitive brutes who didn't appreciate her power and position and caused trouble. This was calculated and repeated.
Nobody in Gensokyo took that much time and effort in anything, not even Yukari.
no subject
Another thing she had experience with. And usually, as Haru had come to learn, there was usually a perceived mastermind, only for it then to be revealed that there was a mastermind behind the mastermind. Which was something she dearly hoped was not the case here.
"So do you believe... this is also a piece of something? That this isn't the end goal?"
It would make sense. Haru hadn't been here long enough to witness much, but this seemed more like a means than an end.
