August 2022 Event

MAIN NAVIGATION
Toraguma and Tenkohime were not exaggerating when they said that Sai no Kawara was bound to attract extraordinarily deep pockets. The Celestials are already familiar to the Lost Souls, but among the crowds of customers are humans and yokai of wealth that can only be calculated in the billions, and even trillions. Powerful executives have come out to play, the sort of power brokers that almost exist beyond faction politics, the tier who makes the most money out of the city's dealings.
The event has an air of class that is far beyond what the average Lost Soul will have ever imagined…
1. GAMBLING PROBLEM (1 POINT)
The main event comes in the form of the games. This is where the Shuten Clan shines, as they offer up a plethora of gambling opportunities for the rich and powerful to partake in. There might be a Lost Soul or two at the tables, if they're feeling particularly lucky. Buy-in to a game isn't cheap, but if you're low on cash, you can substitute a handful of stellar Stardust to the pot.
Western games like Poker, Blackjack, and Roulette share space with Eastern standards like Cee-lo and Cho-han. Shuten Clan dealers have been training hard for this moment. They have learned to cheat on behalf of the House to scrape as much from these high rollers as they can. Those Shuten attendants who win big for the House will be duly compensated for their fine efforts.
If you're very clever, or very lucky, you might just be able to secure quite a payout for yourself as a player too. Just don't get caught pulling any funny business. The Shuten Clan bouncers have also been training quite thoroughly for this event. If you're not one of the fabulously wealthy tycoons, the bouncers have little incentive to play nice with you.
Should fighting break out, there is an arena onsite. Bets are flying there, too. Are you willing to wager your own pretty face?
2. PLEASURE PALACE (1 POINT)
Tenkohime wasn't exaggerating when she called her turf in the newly renovated underground a palace. The attendants at the Palace of Sai greet their wealthy clientele warmly, and they have a host of wondrous and rare delights to offer. As a rare treat, the Lost Souls are encouraged to indulge in this decadence. If the prices make you choke, remember that a little bit of Stardust will go a long way this season.
Food and drinks are of the highest quality. Delicacies from across Japan and the world abroad have been prepared, including many dishes not even of the Earth as you might know it. Particular favorites from the drinks menu are:The pricey and fabulous drinks are just an encouragement. The Tamamo's best trained consorts are ready to offer their private services, usually in pairs. They have some Tanabata wishes of their own, and want to make them come true through their talents and skills. Not every encounter is sexual, some consorts simply wish to spend time with their clients and make them feel like the most important person in the world today. With the big price tags on their hours, the customer might very well be.
- Side Cars that have been made with cognac from a 300,000 yen bottle.
- Platinum Passions that have been made with L’esprit de Courvoisier; 800,000 yen per bottle.
- Eightfold Blessing is a captivating and aromatic mix considered to be Tenkohime's very own specialty. It grants the vigor to fulfill any desire; 1,000,000 yen a glass.
In addition to expensive meals, sex, and company, the Tamamo Clan also offers theater and performances. They have contracted with the highest caliber performers in the city, even those on loan from other factions. Dancers, musicians, and entertainers of all varieties are waiting in the wings to put on a show.
3. GOSSIP (1 POINT)
One of the performances gracing the stage in the Palace of Sai may seem familiar! The band Moonday played at the food truck festival last month. As it turns out, the lead singer -- a wolf girl named Ringo-chan -- is the daughter of one of the wealthiest executives within the Alliance's network of finance kings; Kaberou. She's run away from her restrictive life to rough it with her band. Big money is riding on convincing her to come home. There's another rumor floating around that the pirates attacking the supply lines have been putting pressure on Kaberou. Is he securing buyers for these pirated goods?
Rumors are flying: the kind of rumors that can bring riches or ruin. The Daitengu has commanded their people to keep their ears open. Do they happen upon a juicy lead? Do they find a way to reconnect Kaberou with his estranged daughter? Do they discover more about the pirates? Do tell, do tell!
Even the staff of the Enma Department will find lips much looser than usual around them. When you're this rich, you think you're above the standards of the law. There's plenty of conversation that might be of interest to the Department. In particular, one name does keep coming up...
It comes up when discussing Kaberou's dealings with these pirates, and how much of a wrench his daughter's negligence to the life has been for his business. It's spoken of in hushed tones, even by the Celestials. It is an ominous name: "Iron Bear"
4. TANABATA (2 POINTS)
The grand opening of the underground is the centerpiece of an otherwise familiar Tanabata celebration. Using the accumulated Stardust, the Tamamo Clan's onmyouji have collaborated with Kappa engineers and the Shuten Clan's resident blacksmith to create a truly wonderful spectacle for the festival.
Despite Sai no Kawara existing underground, the overhead sky is full of brilliant stars on display. It is a one-to-one recreation of the cosmic tapestry of the Milky Way streaking through the sky like the astral river from the Tanabata legend.
The stars Vega and Altair, also known as Orihime and Hikoboshi, are highlighted in the tapestry. They take form and dance together above everyone, they encourage the feelings of love to fill the air. Romantic love, platonic love, familial love: it doesn't matter. This is the product of peace, hard work, and cooperation. This is the dream of the Daitengu and their lieutenants. Dance to the music. Drink your fill. This is a celebration of love, and there's so much love here, for everyone.
Attendees are encouraged to write their wishes on the colorful talismans distributed. Bamboo trees decorate the central square, waiting to be draped with wishes. Even if you are not familiar with Tanabata, it will be easy to pick up on the ritual. The magic in the air tonight is incredibly strong, these wishes might even come true.
5. "WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE" (2 POINTS)
Late into the evening, the Daitengu takes to the stage. They welcome everyone and hope that they have had a good night. Toraguma and Tenkohime flank them, and each says a few words to the crowd. Then, Sutoku lieutenant Sakamoto is called up to the stage for the moment of truth.
Toraguma, regretfully, announces that Sakamoto has made good on his promises. The holes in their supply lines have been uncovered found, the black market is becoming less of a bleed on their finances, and the road to finding out who -- or what -- is causing the disruption is becoming clearer. The great oni will always honor a promise kept, and reaches out his hand to shake Sakamoto's in a gesture of gratitude.
The timing, as usual, is a little dramatic.
A group of shadowy figures wearing rough-spun gear storm the stage. Several of them snatch Ringo-chan from where she is waiting to perform and drag her away. Another lunges at Sakamoto with a make-shift sword of crude metal. Just before the blade can cut Sakamoto, the would-be assassin is stopped by Toraguma. With their wrist snatched and broken, the assassin screams out:
"We come on behalf of the Iron Bear, and we know who you are!"
In his rage and fury, Toraguma breaks the assassin's neck, slamming him down to the stage. He dies within moments, while the rest of the attackers flee. They've kidnapped Ringo-chan.
Sai no Kawara is quickly flooded with armed and armored officers of the Enma Department. They instruct everyone to remain calm. No one panic. The Enma himself has arrived, and he is going to start questioning everyone about what just happened. Who is the Iron Bear? What in hell do they want? It's time for some answers.
Well… As far as parties in Jigoku-cho go… this one could have been worse, yeah?

Gao Yizhi | Iron Widow | Tamamo
People think you’re a fox spirit-
But I know that’s not true, because if you were you would’ve eaten me already, right?
Pleasure Palace
[The youngest fox of Mizukume’s den is finally starting to hunt.
His outfit for the event is elaborate for a purpose. Yizhi takes a shift at one of the Palace’s major bars, a luxurious circular affair with a beautiful faux tree at its center, and with him many of the Mizukume’s regular clientele are lured here to see what he’s like working the floor. There Yizhi smiles at them and guts their wallets, because the more you pay, the more he’ll talk to you, and who doesn’t want to try monopolizing this limited time?]
Tanabata / wildcard
customer i.
[Of course, Matoba isn't going to let the chance of rubbing elbows with Tamamo's expensive clientele go. The expensive bottle of sake that makes it way to Matoba befits the way he's dressed, accepting the bottle with offers to pour towards his Celestial guests.]
Quite well, thank you. You Tamamo seem busy as always.
[His razor smile suits the company he's in.] Due to your excellent sense of customer service, I'm sure.
no subject
He lowers his gaze at the compliment, as if bashful, before deftly handing out more sake cups to Matoba’s elite companions.]
Thank you, that’s very generous of you to say. We’re just doing what we can to make tonight a success.
no subject
[Minus the bed. The dividing factor.]
Everyone seems to be enjoying themselves. [Matoba pours a cup for each of his guests, bowing his head for each as he does so. He's accustomed to attending gods- whether they were the sworn protectors of a household, or enshrined and cranky deep in a mountainside.] We were just discussing the last time the Celestials came to visit us. Before...
[A calculated, soft tsk escapes him for the Celestials' benefit.] We were visited upon by that inauspicious and ragged kami, Haniyasu. Terrible, what's happened to it.
Oh yes, who would have thought those unclean ones would still be hanging around somewhere? [A Celestial comments haughtily while sipping at their sake. Matoba's eye slides up to watch Yizhi.]
no subject
Oh, I remember, it was terrible. [He murmurs quietly. Then, hearing the general disdain by the Celestials- inauspicious- impure- I certainly hope they don’t appear here again, or I’ll have to go elsewhere for my midautumn retreat- he adds:] But eventful, too. I heard a building caught on fire in the middle of the rain and it burnt all the way to the ground.
What, really?
I suppose that is rather exciting…
[Honestly, Haniyasu is old news to him. In the first days after the rain the Mizukume’s wealthy clients were all too eager to forget the whole incident; such is wealth, it makes ostriches of people. But since this darkly handsome eyepatch man brought it up, Yizhi can help tag-team it… if the other guy does the questioning and takes the heat for that. Hey, he’s just supposed to be making cute small-talk here. :3]

Staff
Should be going well. You haven't heard any angry customers, right?
no subject
[Though he can’t afford to fully relax yet, his faction member’s presence and the brief lull in activity has Yizhi leaning lightly against his side of the counter, letting out a silent exhale as he takes in the evening.]
Well, so far so good!
[He shoots Nero a conspiratorial look, one Tamamo member to another. Right?]
no subject
Nero's more relaxed in the back than out there on the floor, but eyes on him are things he doesn't generally enjoy.]
So far.
[Whatever happens on the stage will be a tragedy but for now, it's all work.]
Let me know if you need anythin' quick. I can move those orders up.
no subject
[Yizhi takes out his own bottle of water and takes a sip, covering his mouth with a sleeve for modesty.]
We do need the quality to be perfect every time, though. That’s okay, right? I haven’t gotten any complaints, but food isn’t my station’s main thing.

customer ii.
[ It is what he says as he comes to sit down at the table.
The young man looks familiar to him. It takes him a moment to realize that the reason is that they've spoken only a few times on the EMBER. His head tips slightly as he offers recognition to him.
In a kimono that Ydris had picked out for him, he actually looks somewhat respectable instead of how he always looks -- a little dirty, hands and face splattered in blood, and the air of someone that may kill at a moment's notice. ]
It sounds as though no one has won yet, though.
no subject
It’s no better keeping the stories in one’s heart, no?
[Yizhi smiles and tips his head in response as Artemy approaches.]
Your outfit is very handsome. [It’s sincere, with a touch of nostalgia; white and red are Shimin’s colors. Those are also colors on Yizhi’s own outfit, so perhaps one can guess why.] Can I get you anything to drink?
no subject
[ Artemy can’t help but agree with what he says, but adds: ]
Careful that they don’t take a life of their own and the audience decides to warp it to whatever narrative that they desire, though.
[ His tone of voice is not spoken as a warning, however, but gentle teasing. He tips his chin up as he makes a gesture with it toward the yokai milling about and grumbling to themselves.
A pause as he tugs lighty on his kimono. ]
Thank you. My dearheart chose it for me. They have a much better eye than I ever would have for clothes and patterns. [ He chuckles. ] And I would be a fool not to take you up on a free drink.
But I’ll make it whatever you are having. [ A beat. ] A good way to get to know one another is to see what the other likes, hm?
no subject
[Okay wait pause the presses. “Dearheart”!! Artemy’s also got a special someone!!! A sparkle comes into Yizhi’s eyes as he hears this- he loves love! He’s happy that a handsome man as this has a happy relationship.]
Do they?
I was going to say that the drinks aren’t free, but you know what, you can have one on the house. Lovers should be happy on Tanabata.
[The occasion is honestly an excuse, Yizhi is allowed to give out free drinks and he just wants to hear about the datefriend. His mood has improved just from the one adorable anecdote.]
I don’t drink, [he’s a tea guy,] but a good quality sake is hard to go wrong with. How about that?

customer i. `time for the goss`
It's the third time that he finally sits down at the counter, though. For the sake of not being further mobbed by celestials, he's let Frog Man take a well deserved break from being present, resting his chin in his palm and just trying to take it easy for a second. Socializing like this is exhausting. How do people do this day in and day out? But he's determined on his course of action... ]
Ah, no, this time I'm drinking for myself. Is this an improper place to ask for a cocktail, or are you only doing straight-pour? [ Are these even the 'modern' terms. He's not been to a bar, aside from that embarrassment at the tiki counter two months back. ] I really want a cherry mojito but...I'm worried the other servers would eat me alive. [ Literally or metaphorically. ]
goss! goss! goss!
No, I can do that for you. I’m not as good as Mr. Shylock, but I also don’t know any ban on mojitos if there is one.
[With a nod to acknowledge Tamamori’s order Yizhi sets a glass in front of him and reaches for tongs for the ingredients. If he was kind of celestial-like in the convenience store, he’s Definitely got an aura about him now: this is him actively trying to be refined. His voice is steady as if talking to a client; having to control his heavy sleeves makes his actions more measured and purposeful.]
Any success with socialising?
[His words are encouraging though, and deep down he is still encouraging.]
in this tag: fellas is it normal to space out because your friends are attractive
he has no idea how that metaphorical has become a higher possibility due to leshy but lets let him live in blissful ignoranceIt's a relief that he doesn't have to get sent off to another bar, and Tama slumps a little, but also waves off the mention of Shylock's skills. ] Don't worry. Even if he were here, I'd still be ordering from you. I was dared to order a drink from him at the beach party...it didn't go so well. [ He'd chickened out on asking for it, even. Why was the future so horny. He's just a simple Taisho repressed twink. ] I'm sure he's forgotten, but I'm very skilled at being embarrassed!
[ And despite his..."boast", Tama is all too aware of that refined aura. It's some mix of envy and...well. He'd always been quite certain that he wasn't interested in men, and with that proven twice over to be wrong, maybe he could internally admit to being a bit bashful over his appreciations, too. Stupid hell, introducing him to a legion of beautiful people, when he barely knew how to make friends...ah. Heck, Yizhi asked a question- Tama sat up a little straighter after zoning out a little. ] Yes and no. Apparently I have haters? [ He still doesn't quite understand the term, but- ] But Frog Man is quite popular, so people were willing to be more loose in their manner around him. I don't want to tucker him out, parading him around though...he's not used to anyone being able to see him.
no subject
Oh? Oh no, that sucks. [Tama probably shouldn’t have told Yizhi, because Yizhi absolutely wants to know the drama, but he has the sense to not press. He’s going to ask Shylock about it, of course.] And don’t listen to the haters, people will badmouth something for no good reason at all because it’s easy. Just stay away from them.
[As he speaks, Yizhi’s hands work on assembling the cherry mojito- muddling cherries and syrup, pouring ice, pouring rum. It’s ASMR that matches the decadent air of the place, the tinkling of crystal and glass.]
[Curiously:] Does Frog Man like being seen now?
Customer ii
He wouldn't have made it a riddle if the answer was easy to guess.
[Does that help at all? Probably not. But Lalli isn't always the most helpful.
He is going to go over to talk to Yizhi though. He looks very out of place when he slips up on a barstool- instead of dressing nicely, he's opted for his usual clothes and cloak- and he'll wait for Yizhi to make his way down to the end where he's sitting. It's only once Yuzi has approached that Lalli will say something in a quiet voice:]
You haven't found him yet, have you?
lalli!! i was thinking of tagging into his toplevel, but im glad he came to me first c:
A series of emotions flash across Yizhi’s face in rapid succession- confusion, then surprise, then melancholy. Then his face goes quiet, the calm that looks most natural on his soft features.]
No… it seems that he’s not here. [a beat, then:] But that tells me I’m probably not meant to be here, either. I’ll find my way to them eventually.
[He looks up- somewhere within the past few seconds his gaze had drifted downwards to the polished countertop- to give Lalli an amused glance and a smile.]
Why open with something so serious? It’s Tanabata. Are you enjoying yourself?
no subject
[He might as well give Yizhi an honest answer there. If Yizhi is trying to get people to guess, then he would know about it anyway. But then again, that sad look speaks to something else too. Was Yizhi trying to have some fun and Lalli just ruined it somehow? Hmm, he doesn't like that thought. Yizhi has been nice to him so far, he doesn't want to upset the guy. So he'll answer the other question too.]
I guess I'm enjoying myself? It seems like a holiday for lovers, and I don't have one.
[That probably doesn't help much either though. Lalli doesn't usually feel self-conscious about having no dating experience, but everything about Tanabata has been making him think about it more.]
no subject
[After the moment of sadness, Yizhi seems to recover his good humor easily- it’s probably fine, he’s good at doing that.]
Right… that’s true. I’m glad you’re still enjoying yourself, though. Do you want a drink? They’re pretty expensive, I can get you an iced water if you just want to talk for a bit.
[He’s curious about what Lalli’s seen and done, but he’s still on shift. It will look better to let Lalli rest here if the guy has something in front of him.]

Put simply? She's fucking parched. )
Think some of these people have never been allowed t' have fun.
( Whether that means in the "turning up and being scandalised that Tamamo areas are like this" or the "going fucking buckwild" way? ... Honestly, both. )
Re: staff times
[He doesn’t pick one or the other meaning either. Honestly, the elite do somehow juggle the paradox of being both unbelievably indulgent and incredibly vocal about other people’s morality, at the same time. Don't ask him how he knows. (Or do, he's not Kate's boss.)]
no subject
But this guy speaks with a kind of factual seriousness that suggests he's more accustomed to this sphere of life than her. Kate settles to one side of the table, leaving enough room for anyone who wants to drop by and get themselves a drink. She could use some conversation that has nothing to do with getting people food or drinks. )
Not bein' wealthy, too.
( There is at least one table where everyone sitting looks increasingly pale as their eyes scan down the menu, and she points it out with a nod of her head.
... To be fair to them, she'd be making the same expression if she wasn't used to fine dining prices from her job at the restaurant. )
