Chess huh? Sounds like a fairly long process for a fairly low profit though.

[And probably something Gojyo would do horribly in, truthfully. He loved counting cards and processing statistical outcomes in his own special barely-educated way. And perhaps, if given time, he could actually become good at things like chess. But since he knew jack-shit about playing such a "nerd-game" he really had no keen interest to pick it up.]

Well, this is definitely simpler than chess, so you'll probably pick it up fast at least.

[With that he started distributing cards. Two, face-up, for Sheliak. Two, one face-up and the other face-down, for himself.]

They even got playing cards in your world? Or do I gotta explain that part first?

Weird. Sheliak's eyes. Were they always so gorgeous? He never felt someone's gaze leave such an impact on him. They were almost like... Well, almost like the sea.]

That's because you're thinking too small. The final outcome isn't the only thing you can bet on. The longer the game, the more bets one can make along the way as each player tries to use the other's pride and greed to maneuver them into their downfall. It's a battle of wits as much as strategy.

[Sheliak would have to teach Gojyo sometime. Chess was an ancient and noble game, not some common "nerd game."

Normally Sheliak found Gojyo's crimson eyes comforting. The odd color reminded him of his own and the other mages he left behind. That was before he regained his magic though. Now Sheliak felt like he couldn't hide and he quickly looked down at the cards instead.]

We had something similar and Earth had playing cards so I know the basics.

Oh right. They were playing a game. And they were talking about other games. Gojyo had almost lost his train of thought there for a second.]

So it's like microtransactions then? Like a long term betting process between two people based around smaller actions in the game?

Right then, anyway, since you're familiar with how playing cards work you should be able to pick this up pretty easily.

[He nods his head toward Sheliak's cards. One seven and one four.]

Each on of those represents a certain number of points. Your goal, is to hit twenty-one points without going over. It's actually the same for me as well.

[He looks down at his own cards, a single queen of hearts presenting itself along side the mysterious face-down card.]

Main thing is, unlike you, we don't know what else I have and if it will bring me over or not.
