[Cain takes a seat next to where he thinks the guy is, holding a hand out so he can finally see him.]

Sorry...I know I posted about it earlier, but I can't actually see you..? I don't think I've met you before either.

[ He had definitely skimmed over that post, but found it improbable somewhere around 'fighting the moon' and hadn't taken it too seriously. Woops. After a moment's hesitation he switches his cigarette to the other hand so he can reach out for Cain's hand. ]

Uh... M'Majima. One of th'Shuten lieutenants.

[Cain was realizing the hard part was keeping track of who was who online, since it seemed a lot of people didn't use their real names. Well, it still saved him time and Cain gladly accepted the hand.]

Cain Knightley, I'm with the Enma department. Though if you saw that I guess you know that already...

[Majima would be able to see the large black tattoo on Cain's right forearm, though it appeared to be more like a brand or a sigil than anything else.]

Nice to meet you-and wow...I don't think I've ever seen tattoos like yours before!

[ It's actually fairly complicated symbology that he doesn't want to get into at the moment. When he got it, he had something different in mind than how his life really turned out to be. ]

[Unfortunately, Cain was really curious about the unfamiliar word and the intricate designs. He honestly had never seen humans with tattoos like these before and it was seriously amazing.]

A hannya...oh, is this a type of youkai? The sage talks about them, since there are a lot of stories about them in their country-but the magical creatures we have are often different.

Is it for protection? Especially if its a witch.

It's, uh, it means I'm a member of th'yakuza. Ya get a tattoo that... emobdies yer spirit, I guess. T'tell other guys what kind of man ya are.

[ He is tortured. He is vicious. The snakes that twine around his arms convey his speed, his cunning, his ability to change and adapt. ]

[Oh, that made sense. He heard some humans practiced that, and he could see how it could be considered good luck. Cain wondered if there was actual magic in the tattoo..but that's something he couldn't sense right now.]

I see-oh, yakuza. I've heard that term before. That is...uh, it's kinda like a gang? But with a leader and a structure and everything. Kinda like Bradley's bandits, I think...

[Cain, Majima's not going to know what you're talking about.]

That's pretty amazing, though! From this I can definitely tell you are a fierce warrior, and you've been in many battles before.

[ He answers blandly, he is so beyond having to explain this to people. ]

Not everyody lives up t'their irezumi... but yer supposed t'try.

[It was probably a good thing, because there was no guarantee that Cain would even understand the nuances of what he was saying. Being a warrior though, he knew plenty about that.]

So you get them before you become a warrior? Sort of like a reminder to yourself, then. I don't know if any of the humans in our world do such things either but I got to respect your pride like that.

[He could tell there was something melancholic about the way this man said those words, but he doubted if asked directly he'd want to talk about it.]

What kind of things did you fight for then?

Yeah... ya hang 'round th'offices for a while as an apprentice. Then when ya prove ya can hack it, they swear ya in. Then th'tattoo shows yer one've them.

[ An unmistakable symbol of defiance. Tattoos are still regarded as criminal signifiers by the wider Japanese public. The yakuza wear theirs loudly, proudly. ]

Guess mine're... 'bout power. Always been better at fightin' than anythin' else. Never backin' down t'someone who don't deserve it.

[ One of many reasons people swear up: an unwillingness to be ground down by the status quo of mediocrity that respectable life enforces. ]

I see. This Yakuza is definitely more complicated than I realized.

[It seemed like there were a ton of rules actually; Cain was intrigued, and he briefly wondered how many rules Bradley had imposed with his own team. But what Majima said next....his own hand settled over the Sage's mark branded onto his skin.]

Even if I don't always agree with power at the expense of others, I can get you on that. I need to keep getting stronger than everyone else around me. For the prince I swore allegiance too-and our duty. You think we can do it?

[ He gives Cain a bemused look in response to this earnest declaration. Uh? ]

Promised somebody we wouldn't stop until we got to the top, so...

[ He keeps his promises. A small shrug, still looking amused. ]

[Sorry, Majima. That's kind of what he was like. At least he really was being genuine about it. As for the subject of promises...]

A promise? That's a hard thing to make and keep. I know it's different for humans, but...well, I guess I can just say that I admire your conviction.

[There were a lot of humans who took promises so lightly and broke them like it was nothing, trampling all over the feelings of others. The only person he could fathom making that much of a promise to was his liege but even then...the idea scared him.]

You're braver than me, I think.

[ He is so not even following. ]

[Oh. Right. Humans here don't really know anything about wizards from his world. That wouldn't make sense outside of that, he guessed.]

Well for wizards like me, if we break a promise like that we lose all our magic. It's probably a fate worse than death for most of us, since we use magic with our heart.

[ That's dramatic, but also kind of relatable. Only the magic that yakuza thrive on is their sense of honor. ]
