[coming to him, she starts to peel away the gauze and bandages.]

Got some fingers in me. Not much else.

[the response comes swiftly, a little more brittle than normal. it's too small to be anything but deliberate, not an accident, and she exhales slowly, beginning to pick out the cut stitches.]

[still restrained. still removing what's broken. and not making eye contact.]

...You really have no idea of the situation you're in, do you?
[there's something like finely carved ice in her words, her expression as she turns away. posture as straight as iron as she pulls the tray closer to herself. he doesn't understand at all, and were she a worse person, she could send him away with no help. let him sit as infection no doubt comes in. but she's benevolent, and so she has another course of action in mind.
looking back at him, she has neither needle nor bandage in mind, but a scalpel. before he can protest, she's moved and cut all of the stitches, fully reopening the wound and cutting just a hair deeper in the process. not to the extent that it was, not the deadly blood loss, but it's still going to bleed. it's still going to sting and ache. and from where she stands, she simply looks, and watches, and does nothing to help him. not yet.]

Alright, baby, want to play dirty? I can play dirty!

[drip, drip, drip, and only then does she move, getting a syringe and injecting the medicine within none too gently under the skin.]
This is a local anesthetic, rather quick acting. You won't feel anything soon enough - there will be no pain. Barely any sensation.
[and therefore, a denial of all that would make this visit fun for him. her tone has frozen over, the dead of winter without hope of spring.]
Are you aware of how an infection can kill you? About how it can make your very blood turn traitor, carrying the poisons that will choke you, rot you from the inside out? How the flesh itself falls apart, how every moment is an agony as you feel death approaching? More drawn out than any blade can inflict, with fever and chills, with you begging for it to cease?
[now she'll get the forceps again. now she'll start to remove the broken pieces of the stitches that she cut, neat as anything.]
Do you understand why I'm not healing this, Nishitani? I could, I very well could. But there is a reason I am not doing so, and it's one you seem to be doing your best to ignore.

You want me to be careful? To play a saint and beg for forgiveness? I've fucking cut out a man's tongue and kept him alive long enough for him to die the way you described. I watched it in excruciating detail and kept him locked in my fucking backyard, too.
I know what my body can take. I know when to see a doctor. So do you fucking job, Emikko.
no subject
I have been doing my job. But ordinarily, my job isn't actively undermined by someone looking for a peculiar sort of thrill. If that's your aim, then know there are ways to achieve your satisfaction without reopening fatal injury. There is a way to do it sensibly - I'll put the blade in your hand and walk you through it directly if I have to, if it keeps you from toying with that life of yours.
[and that is her point, and even if he can't feel it, he'll know by her position that she's doing all that she needs to in order to stem the blood and fix him up again.]
You know what your body can take, but to gain those titles of yours, you've long since gone past what knowing what it should. And that is why I will not fully heal you right now, when you treat the life you said you'd give for me or any of the others so frivolously, as though it could be tossed away at any moment. Nothing else seems to be what would have you sit down and preserve yourself instead of running near death yet again.
[her tone is not entirely frosty, but it is stern, severe, and full of conviction. she can only talk like this because the clinic is her territory, where her rules and her methods aren't to be questioned. she's seen this time and time and time again - except usually, it's from those who know their deaths will be overturned, herself included.
so it's to protect him from himself, in the end.]
You don't only need a doctor when you're on the brink. You have one that will look to you before that, far before, because I care about seeing you alive and well. I don't want to see you die. So I deny you, for that very reason.
no subject
Alright, alright. I'll stop gutfucking this specific injury since it's got you so worked up.
no subject
[that said, her expression's fallen back into that tight, pinched annoyance, and the way her eyes flick back towards the scalpel, he can probably guess she's considering what it'd be like if she did that again.]
Though I'd prefer if you didn't do that to any of your injuries. It's counterproductive to healing.

[can you not be a masochist for 3 seconds]
Besides, you can't believe I'll be handing you or Andy that information before you're recovered.

[she says it calmly, with the faintest hint of amusement behind her words.]
You would enjoy it too much if you felt the entire process. That was clear enough when you came in. It's to encourage you to leave it alone.

[once she can focus on the stitches again, it goes rather swiftly, and she gives it one more pass with the antiseptic to make sure he won't be infected. if she was in a worse mood, she'd make him take antibiotics as a precaution, but if the smoking and drinking haven't yet wrecked his immune system, he's probably fine.
in any case, she's a lot gentler putting the bandages on now, even if he can't feel it.]

[ All it takes is one bad day. ]
Thanks, Emikko. I know I don't say it enough, so I'll say it now.
