May 2022 Mini Event

MAIN NAVIGATION

As the Haniwa continue to pop up in the city and the turf war rages on, life goes on in the city.

1. SHUTEN CLAN

Remember the Isonade? Yeah, those guys. The surly shark-dudes who were no doubt involved in some black market smuggling along the banks of the Sanzu. They were too tough to fight off in order to figure out what they were up to, last time.

Well, Toraguma has caught wind of them now. Despite the ongoing turf war, he’s not about to lose out on an opportunity here! He wants his Shuten Clan operatives to scour the river looking for these guys. They will be a lot harder to find without the rabbits’ help, though. If you find them, you are to “inform them” that the Shuten Clan will be taking over their operation. If they have problems with that, well… you know what to do.

Don’t forget that they’re quite strong and that they aren’t too keen on giving up the information on their supply line without a fight. You’ll need to use teamwork to get what you need out of them.

Should you manage your way to their warehouse, you’ll find a fresh shipment of their products: specialized herbs, mineral-rich clay, and rarefied ore. None of these products can be found in the city naturally. The Isonade won’t dare name their primary buyer but they will let slip that all of this is being smuggled into the city from the outer Wastelands.

The Shuten Clan will demand their cut out of this operation, but you may get the impression that this is only one small piece of a much larger shadow creeping over the city…

2. SUTOKU ALLIANCE

The death and subsequent “rebirth” of the Daitengu has caused a considerable amount of chaos. Many of the subsidiary tribes have struggled under the weight of uncertainty during this debacle. The Daitengu has decided that an apology tour is owed. It’s good for the sake of the Alliance, after all.

Oh, but they’re not going to be doing it themselves. You, the Sutoku Lost Souls, will be fully responsible for it. ૮ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ა

Sutoku Souls are tasked with going to various businesses and tribe centers with an offering of gifts and deference to any and every group within the Alliance who will agree to meet with you. The gifts have been provided by the Daitengu, and are mainly snacks and coupons. Which will not be enough to please everyone. Some clans will demand more and some, in their rage, will try to take their anger out on you. You are an (lowly) ambassador right now, better to turn the other cheek.

This all boils down to be less of an apology tour and more of a bribe tour. What the Daitengu has provided won’t cover everything and you’re going to have to go out of pocket to truly placate the other clans. If you don’t have enough cash on hand, you may be asked to do various unpaid tasks and labors: washing dishes, scrubbing floors, cleaning windows, taking out the trash, serving kids’ birthday parties; any amount of the lowest work you can imagine.

It’s rough! But somebody’s gotta do it

3. DEPARTMENT OF THE ENMA

The chaos of the Night Parade has caused a resurgence of unaffiliated gangs popping up around Jigokucho. They can usually be found identifying themselves through the use of basic colors and mascots. They are made up almost entirely of violent youths with uncertain futures, who are lashing out at an uncaring world. The antics of the Daitengu, the accusations against the Enma, and the squabbling between Shuten and Tamamo is not inspiring their confidence nor loyalty.

In addition to this problem, the retrieval of the Haniwa is going poorly. Most residents are too uncomfortable to even touch the statues and their appearances don’t seem to be slowing down. There are too many for the Department to collect.

With an abundance of cursed objects in town, the petty gangs have decided this is an ample resource for them. They are using the Haniwa to harass the general public and against one another. They have weaponized the excess Haniwa and are using them as “curse bombs”, hurling them at both each other and the residents they want to intimidate. It’s getting nasty.

It’s the Department’s job to keep the Haniwa figures from falling into the wrong hands and to keep some semblance of order. The official orders from the Office of the Enma are directing all hands to converge against the youth gangs. Use any force necessary and retrieve those figurines.

4. TAMAMO CLAN

How inconvenient! In addition to the complications of the turf war, an extremely important time of the year has arrived for the Tamamo Clan.

It is time for the yearly visit of one of the clan’s greatest benefactors: the Tennin. These Celestial Immortals descend from the Heavenly Realms to spend time (and incredible amounts of money) in Hell’s Playground, Jigokucho. Hell simply offers the sort of delights you just can’t get in Heaven. Due to Tenkohime’s connections with them, the Celestials have had her host them for several years in a row now. She emphasizes how incredibly important it is to keep them happy.

The Celestials want entertainment and delights of every variety. It’s up to the Tamamo Clan’s Lost Souls to entertain them. Your entertainments can take many forms: keeping the Celestials company, putting on a performance, showing off your cooking and skills, tea ceremonies, and other exhibitions. Should you choose the carnal and kinky route for entertainments, know that you won’t be laying down with any Celestials themselves. Oh, no no no, they’re Heavenly, after all! This is still performance, so you may need a partner to help you out.

Keep in mind that the legends are true! The Celestials are deeply deeply fond of peaches. Both literal and metaphorical. 🍑

The Celestials love to chat and gossip, so keeping them entertained is also an excellent way to hear some interesting information. Tamamo artisans will likely learn that many Celestials openly trade with Tenkohime. In fact, the aphrodisiac goods that the Tamamos so famously deal in come, in large part, from the Celestials. Tamamo isn’t the only clan they do business with either. They also have connections within the Sutoku Alliance and are the land owners of several Alliance properties. They are considered one of the primary sources of capital in the real estate market.

Why would the Celestials want properties in a world they literally can’t live in? Doesn’t that just reek of capitalism.

5. TURF WAR (ALL FACTIONS)

The turf war between the Shuten and Tamamo clans is at a simmer right now. Which doesn’t mean that it’s over – not even close. Minor magical traps, similar to those found in the sewer, have been found in Shuten territory. Frustrated Shuten enforcers have been taking out their anger on anyone that so much as looks at them funny. Bars in both districts are regularly getting smashed up. Knife fights are breaking out in the streets. Cars known to belong to members of both clans turn up with slashed tires. There’s even rumors of hits being taken out on higher ranking members.

Watch your step if you’re out and about in either territory. Faction affiliation doesn’t matter when tensions are running high. What’s more, rumors are flying all over about which of the two warring clans is going to be the one to escalate the violence further.

Will tensions boil over at any moment? At what point does the Department of the Enma have to step in? Why haven’t they already?

It’s all getting too much to handle…

6. CURSED OBJECTS (ALL FACTIONS)

The presence of the Haniwa is having increasingly frightening effects. There are whispers about blood coming out of the walls and the floors in apartments, about black ooze pouring from faucets and coming up from storm drains. There are even whispers of terrible household hauntings.

These aren’t just rumors though. Bars are having to close early due to the presence of wailing ghosts inhabiting the toilet or blood pouring from the taps. People run screaming out of alleyways pursued by ghostly hands.

These curses and hauntings seem to be fairly localized; kept to one building or one block at a time. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason as to when these accursed sightings will take effect.

Be careful out there! Who knows what could happen with so much terrible energy running rampant.

[Yizhi startles at the hand, but after realising it belongs to Ydris, he relaxes. Smiles apologetically as he shakes the other’s attached hand.] I’m sorry- I thought it was a haniwa-related hand.

It’s nice to meet you. My name is Gao Yizhi. [He sets his drink on the table and sits, hands neatly folded in his lap.] That makes sense to me. Most of us are physically fit, too- the turf war probably wouldn’t get off the ground if it was all elderly uncles and aunties.

I wonder how many Lost Souls have hooked up since arriving here? What do you think the number is?

[Honestly it’s a bit embarrassing that he hasn’t realised the full extent of the hooking up. Like, look around you, kid. Look across the table.]

[Ydris just chuckles a bit at the question, which sounds like someone laughing while a campfire crackles loudly along with. They could probably pull up stats for that! They won't, because it's better if people don't know just how much information is being collected on their activities. Also, there's margin for error of how many might say on the app they plan to and how many actually do. Maybe collecting actually room bookings made through the app would be more sound for organizing accurately-

Thoughts for another time...]

Ember is facilitating plenty of meet ups, just a glance will show you that much. Funny how bold people get when locked into two dramatic choices, but that was the intention.
baofeng: (default)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-05-24 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ember? [Yizhi raises his eyebrows but doesn’t commit to any particular expression. It’s the polite man’s eye-roll.] It’s facilitating a lot, I’m sure. Its ability to kindle things into starting is its strength, but I really wish the app had less bugs.

[He doesn’t know Ydris is the app’s creator. He’s not going to snoop at their computer screen with them right there, that’s too obvious!]

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-05-24 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[listen Ydris isn't going to turn down some free QA-]

You encountered some issues? What, did the machine determine you wanted to fight someone you'd rather fuck-?

[-but don't expect them to not be crass about it]

I can imagine that's a bit awkward to explain, though you could manually update the answer.
baofeng: (nooooooo)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-05-25 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Hey, Yizhi’s not gonna fault anyone for good entrepreneurial sense. He also takes the crass language in stride- his eyebrows raise again when Ydris says ‘fuck’, but he makes no scandalised comment on it. They all have an Enma-given right to say ‘fuck’ down here. ]

Not exactly. [Actually it comes pretty close] The app sent a “fight” invitation automatically when I was just browsing a guy’s profile, not intending to swipe at all! It’s hard to read profiles leisurely with the possibility of that happening again at the back of my mind, and I can’t imagine how many accidental swipes those who don’t know how to use technology have sent out without even realising.

Have you experienced a bug like that?
enterthe: (3)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-05-26 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe the phrase is "that is a feature, not a bug".

[oh, Yizhi, it's designed that way deliberately. Ydris knew people would hesitate and not engage, so they created something to demand interaction. They're a god designed to guide humanity, who are prone to dawdling as often as they are to rushing too quickly forward.

Far as they see it, that's for your own good]

Would you have sent either requested, without the algorithm deciding for you?
baofeng: (backview)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-05-27 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
[He sips his drink thoughtfully. If he had a nickel every time he came across a staunch defender of this shady-ass app, and all that. It’s clear what Ydris expects as an answer. Yizhi doesn’t want to just say something noncommittal and get absolutely Dunked On.]

There’s not much value in a choice that’s made for me. Many people think it’s fine if the one they’re making choices for benefits anyway, but the more it happens, the more it becomes just noise and not a real reflection of what the person is or wants.

That’s just a general thought, though. If the app just wants there to be more fights and sex, maybe they should advertise sex events and gang wars on a sidebar. Get some ad money while they’re at it.

[what’s a shady app without ads, y’know,]

[It might seem weird that it's happened twice, but consider that Artemy is just being #couplegoals and it suddenly makes a lot more sense.]

I believe you dodged my question, but I'll let it slide. [does that count as being Dunked On? They continue...] That's an interesting bit of philosophy, but I argue it misses the point. It presumes that instigation is control.

The app is designed to create social interaction, sex and fights are just extremes that reliably get a reaction from users. If you hesitate then it chooses for you, doesn't allow you to not choose. There are many options presented thereafter! All within your power. You could agree with the assessment, deny it, further explain yourself, blame the machine, play coy... any number of things really. Given the drama of the two primary options, most people won't ignore it.

[they grin as they speak, sometimes their mouth doesn't quite keep up with the words being said. A side effect of being very enthused, as they are proud of their creation. They think it works very well for their aims, which is to guide people into being social creatures.]

That is the death of the application, isn't it? It survives so long as it- [a hand lifts and they snap their fingers in emphasis,] -sparks!- [a little fire appearing for just a moment, so quick that the man would be forgiven for double taking and believing it just a trick of the light] -that social fire! It gets people talking, this is the design.
baofeng: (stressed)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-05-27 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
[You have no idea how sad it makes me that Yizhi doesn’t know they’re a couple.]

Well, I was considering it, but now that it’s happened one way I’ve never gone back to think about what-ifs. The conversation didn’t go anywhere in the end, so I suppose its biggest value is that it happened.

[With the events of the last weeks, not to mention being surrounded by yokai of every variety, it’s difficult for idiosyncracies to shock him anymore- the strange effect of Ydris’ mouth keeps sliding out of his thoughts like river water, before he can get around to finding it suspicious. Ydris is just an interesting new stranger, yknow, with a bit of fire magic. Maybe there's a haniwa around.]

You know, this is going in a bit of a circle. Let’s just say that I’m not the right person for this sort of thing. [Cute sigh with the little anime cloud coming out of his mouth. Aish…] You must’ve had more success, since you’ve figured out the best parts of it.
enterthe: (12)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-05-27 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
[it's a difficult thing to know, when neither will admit that's exactly what they got going on...

Ydris laughs, this time it's mostly in sync]

You got it correct, the value is that it happens at all. The instigation is the purpose, the excuse is what users are meant to utilize. It is meant for everybody, whether they realize or not. Sparking a conversation with someone new can be difficult, but it can lead to great things. Unexpected and dramatic things! [like fighting or fucking! Which was why they chose those options. Surely, that will evolve as they add on to the platform]

I am surprised you did not find success, you're both attractive and sharp witted. Do you become less bold over text? [whoops just... getting into your personal business, Ydris' favorite one way street]
baofeng: (nooooooo)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-05-28 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the problem is that I am too successful, [and also family trauma. The fact that his father built his fortune in the media industry inspires a certain reticence in him about participating in social media; but so many fictional characters have family issues that he’s not even going to bring it up.] -and I’m already in a relationship with people from home. How could I say that I want to sleep with someone else without even asking them? I am either disappointing people if I use the green checkmark, or disappointing other people by not being very good at fights.

[For all his weaknesses when it comes to using the app, at least Yizhi will tell people he’s happily dating?]
enterthe: (10)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-05-30 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
You're holding to an exclusive relationship with people from back home? [Ydris turns that one over for a moment, figurative dial up noises as their god-of-a-sex-comedy brain tries to make sense of it without being too dismissive.]

Bummer.

[they tried]
baofeng: (nooooooo)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-01 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yes?

[Now this is also a comedy. Yizhi’s not as offended as he is, just, confused. What??? What’s the reaction for????? He hasn’t even said the part where they’re both murderers???????]

Yeah, it is a bummer. [For slightly different reasons. Yizhi’s sad his partners aren’t here to try all the city’s indulgences with him.] But wh-what’s the matter with that?
enterthe: (15)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-01 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like a real waste of time. You mortals have such precious few youthful years. And you're going to... what? Be chaste? In hell, with all it's temptations-? Indefinitely? [they laugh under their breathe, if they drank, then they'd be raising a glass to Yizhi about now. Instead, they settle for a quirk of the head and a look that says they don't buy it]

Good luck with that.

[sorry, bud, not a lot of faith in their tone. They've known plenty of druids who tried similar, took vows and everything, only to not last all that long trying.]
baofeng: (scheming?)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-02 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
[He picks up on it finally, being called “you mortals”- okay, Ydris has got something weird going on. But that’s still such a bizarre hill to die on.

Yizhi squints and frowns.]

There’re plenty of other temptations.

[It’s not that different from other elders preaching at him about marriage and fidelity, just in the opposite direction, but… what is it with people thinking they know best about their descendants’ (not even, in the case of his conversation partner) sexuality?]

Sure, I can’t predict what will happen in a few years, but I’m not going to arrive in a new place and lose my mind immediately. It’s only been a few months. Humans aren’t mayflies.

I hope it’s not too rude to ask what you are?
enterthe: (13)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-02 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right, you seem to have plenty of youth left to waste.

[an admission that's still biting, but Ydris isn't going to insist beyond that. It's a ridiculous impulse, in their opinion, to remain physically exclusive to those who aren't around and may not ever be. If it provides the man some comfort, though, is a way to cope with that sense of loss, then... well, Ydris also finds that silly, but can keep that much to themself.

As for being asked what they are, they get a distant stare, then mutter as if mostly talking to themself]

I need to show what I am earlier to people, this illusion is getting too comfortable...

[and with that, they burn away the illusion wrapped around them, the form peeling and sizzling away as if it had been a paper shell all along. Their candle body rests in the chair, expression statuesque as it rests unmoving in it's carved state. The warm they exude is notable and even inviting, a quirk of their magic is it is distinctly comforting. The mouth does not move and their voice is directionless in this state, almost like it's in the mind more than the air]

I am the Fire Dragon of Myddvai. I wear that illusion as a courtesy, this form tends to concern mortals and yokai, alike. [like literally right now people are suddenly very aware of their table]
baofeng: (neutral)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-06 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
[Agree to disagree; that’s well enough for him. Yizhi thinks, with his limited perspective, that he can be open-minded, but there are also some things he’s not looking to have his mind changed on.

His understanding of Ydris, on the other hand, he can adapt just fine. Yizhi’s eyes widen in surprise as Ydris’ whole body changes, and he blinks in silence for a while, resting his chin on a hand so no surprised exclamations slip out. That sure is! He… doesn’t think that looks like a dragon, it’s still kind of humanoid, but he’s not going to make statements about something he doesn’t at all understand.]

I think that’s a good idea, if you prefer this form. It’s not that out of place next to the yokai.

[At least he’s doing a good job of keeping any shock and/or horror under control, unlike some of the other cafegoers. His tone is more polite than before when he was gossiping, but other than that, he’s able to continue as normal.]
enterthe: (13)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-06 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[good on Yizhi, really, for not making a surprised sound. It hurts Ydris' feelings! In that slight way of someone very used to it, but still, they prefer to avoid that familiar feeling of being seen as shocking. It's just how they are, they don't need the reminder they weren't made correctly...]

This form is limited, as my powers are lessened since arriving here. The illusion is practical, as well as more comforting to most. Still... it's intention is not to deceive.

[They do cap that off with returning their illusion into place, which forms in an outward glow of light. Their expression remains just as blank as their waxen face was, perhaps because they haven't settled on any other way to look. Taking resting bitch face to the next level, really.]
baofeng: (neutral)

gonna be slow for a bit! am sick ;w;

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-10 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
[He might not be the most carefree about sex, but if you need someone to not freak out at something that would ordinarily freak people out, he’s your guy. Yizhi doesn’t think it’s “shocking”! It’s more… not what he expected to encounter today.]

Do you feel like it might be deceiving people? Do you like it, in general?

[Also, he’s going to gently attempt an UNO reverse card on that personal-business-snooping. He did answer honestly when it was his turn so it’s only fair.]
enterthe: (16)

take your time!!

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-11 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
[Ydris doesn't have much issue sharing such things about themself, largely because it seems inconsequential, surface level maybe...]

It has incidentally deceived a few, but I consider that their fault. I'm not precisely subtle in my lack of humanity.

[like their suspicious lack of... breathing regularly or blinking or even normal fidgeting. Paying basically any attention to Ydris makes it pretty clear they're something odd, certainly not human.

Sapient fires housed in metal and wax is not more people's first guess, though]
baofeng: (pondering)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-15 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
[Ydris was right on the money with their observations- Yizhi puts together a socially graceful response with ease, thanks to how much he’s done so back home.]

Then frequenting the body you prefer seems like a great idea. Your true form is quite impressive, I wouldn’t call it concerning. [not to Ydris’ face, at least. It’s rude.]As you say, why hold back in Hell?

You could put it on your Ember profile.
enterthe: (12)

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-15 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ydris is genuinely surprised people are not rude about it. There really isn't much like them, so mortals and yokai alike tend to gawk at that form. The human one is easier for a variety of reasons...]

I might do just that, if also to make it more clear that the project is my own. Funny to me that I can be the default profile and people fail to recognize it as my creation. I want the credit.

[Less the blame, if it ends up backfiring for it's information collecting methods, buuuut that's a worry for Later-Ydris. Current Ydris wants acclaim.]
baofeng: (nooooooo)

[personal profile] baofeng 2022-06-19 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
Eh?! You’re the creator?

[Case in point.]

I thought you were just paid to model! [Yizhi says, and then cringes internally, because that’s kind of rude to say to their face and also all the app salt he said not ten minutes ago is coming back to haunt him. That explains some things, at least.] Yeah, I think you should state credit.
enterthe: (20)

Good stopping point here <3

[personal profile] enterthe 2022-06-19 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Very funny I could rattle on and on about it without you catching on to that. It is mine and I'm most proud of it. [Ydris looks very contented and smug]

I do appreciate your candid insight. I'll keep that in mind as I plan the next expansion.

[it'll be a doozie!]
