SUBSTORY 1: MOON MEDICINE
(It was just mochi. How dangerous could mochi be? There's a reason why mochi is up high on Hizens' list of favorite foods and it's because mochi has never done him wrong.
โฆ Yeah, this definitely isn't his brightest moment and in his defense, he never pretended to be particularly smart.
It's a warm, sunny spring day but Hizen is bundled up in his hoodie and a scarf. No matter what does, he can't fight off this chill and even being out in the sun isn't helping. Desperate, he tries to buy a hot drink from a vending machine if only so he can have something to warm his hands with and
it just takes his money without giving him anything. He tries one more time and gets the exact same result! He can be found sticking his arm up the slot, shaking the machine, or punching it. Sensitive to being watched, he turns his head to see you. Yes, you and snaps, teeth chattering,)
What?! (He's defensive,) Stop looking!
(And please don't perceive the fact that he's literally shaking while he yells at you.)
SUBSTORY 2: VEND ME A DREAM
(They had to retrieve a photograph of a certain host and then bring a hitobashira some takoyaki from a particular vendor that required waiting in an obscenely long line that never seemed to move. After getting the takoyaki, they had to go to a cafe and find a kitsune who was actually a very offended tanuki who asked them if they tried the vending machine alley on the other side of the city. When they get to the alley, they find a strange vending machine in the place that should have had the vending machine they were looking for. It looks like it's been replaced with one that just gives ominous mystery items instead.
His body is small and can only hold so much frustration before he explodes. He lets out a yell when he sees the vending machine,)
Aaaaaaaah! (He kicks at it which makes it beep and flicker,) Where the hell is it?!
(An entire floor full of vending machines and the right one isn't even here.
Maybe you were already with Hizen on his quest. Or maybe you were also led to the hall of vending machines. Or you just heard about this weird place and want to try your luck for unrelated reasons.)
SUBSTORY 4: HANIWHAT?
(He isn't the most sensitive person, even back home when he knows what to look out for. It's easy for most things to slip past him if he isn't paying attention, especially in Jigoku-cho where there are so many things happening, a strange occurrence here and there can be overlooked. But these dolls are strange. He isn't an expert on them but he recognizes them for what they are. They're old; far beyond in his time or knowledge. At first, he hadn't thought much of them but the more he noticed them, the more uncomfortable he became.
These things just feel bad to him. They make him uncomfortable and put him on edge and when he hears that the Enma are calling for them, he's relieved. Good riddance. He has no idea what they're up to but it isn't going to be his problem.
But everyone is so nosy. Everyone wants to push their luck and see what they are. They touch them, they move them around, they treat them roughly, and it just makes him feel anxious. When he sees you checking one out, he snaps,)
Oi. Leave it alone.
(He's clearly irritated,)
You're gonna get in trouble if you keep messing with it.
GENERAL: SHUTEN TERRITORY
(Hizen can be found checking out some of the weapons stores in Shuten territory. He isn't looking for a new weaponโ he's perfectly content with his own sword, thank you very much. But when your true form is your sword, weapon maintenance is important. He's shopping for oil, cloth, and other things to take care of himself and he's also asking around to see if anyone can recommend a good smith but no one really wants to give out their source. Instead, they keep trying to sell him a new sword,)
I told ya already, I'm not interested.
(Yeah, but they really don't want to give out their suppliers. It's bad for business, you know?)
I don't give a shit about that. I'm just looking for a guy that can fix things.
(Well, if your sword is broken then might they recommend this one here? It's quite popular with the new recruitsโ)
I'm not broke!
(Kind of a weird thing to yell but yeah.)

Is he here, or an illusion? After meeting Ryouma and Izou, there's always a seed of doubt and expectations. Is that man getting closer, or moving further away? There's another crack in the air.]
Wait a moment!
[Normally, he avoid saying that man's name. His name only comes out either during work, or with certain company. That man's name is at the tip of his tongue, just waiting to be spoken out loud. What would he say if the man turn around and speak to him? Would he even act normal?
That man seems to pause during his walk, and slowly turns around.
Okita Souji.]

(It's a desperate call for attention while he chases after Norimune. Something Hizen has always had to his advantage is his speed so its easy to catch up to Norimune. He's very close behind and reaches out to try and grab him by his sleeve or whatever he can grab. He can see that blue figure up ahead and anyone would recognize that uniform if they knew what it was.)
He's not real!
(Okita Souji isn't here.)
no subject
Ooph!
[It's like a sudden jerk for Norimune. He briefly stumble before he regain his balance, just in time to hear Hizen's words. "He's not real!"
Logically, it makes sense. And Hizen's never one to misspoke about this, especially considering their respective roles and duties back home. But his eyes remain on Okita Souji, who somehow remain untouched by the rain. That man looks hearty and hale... (which is still possible, if he's from before his tuberculosis rear its ugly head, unless...).]
I need to confirm for myself...!
[One of his hand move behind him, trying to pry, yank Hizen's grip away.]
no subject
(Norimune is trying to pull himself free and he holds on harder.)
Stop ignoring me. (Why is everyone always ignoring him? Don't they trust him? Isn't he good enough to get their attention? He can feel his anxiety spike and the shadows whisper around him as they shift and try to latch on to whatever bit of misery they can feed off of. No, he can't waste his time feeling sorry about himself now. He has to take care of Norimune--)
He's not real. None of this is real. Just trust me...
(Ah, but Norimune will eventually be able to pull free and Hizen will panic all over again because this isn't like him. )

He's moving closer towards Okita Souji, who still look like the very picture of health. And the closer he gets, the easier it is for him to see the sheathed blade at that swordsman's side. Norimune's footsteps slows down as he realise what he's seeing.
That's not Kashuu Kiyomitsu.
Or even Yamatonokami Yasusada.
It's even more clearer once he watches Okita unsheathe the blade, its form unmistakeable to Norimune's eyes. It's Kiku-Ichimonji Norimune.
And Okita "noticed" him. Real or trickery, that man's looking back at Norimune.]
... Uhahaha... of course. I should've expected this.
[There's always a possibility of meeting one Okita Souji here, hailing from a world where the stories are true. Such thoughts always give him mixed feelings. Now? It's intensified within his chest.]
no subject
He remembers the older touken danshi explaining their nature to those less likely to think about it. Their spirits are based on histories, legends, rumors, and even false stories... But in Jigoku where other worlds can meet and different stories can mix, anything is possible.
He doesn't like how Okita draws his sword though and he immediately goes on guard, a hand ready at his sword. Okita Souji was considered a genius swordsman. One of the best of the Shinsengumi. He's seen how Okita's swords fight and he believes it. Even Hizen, the sword of a genius swordsman in his own right, hast to work to keep up, and even then, he feels lacking compared to the careful training they inherited.)
Old man. (Now isn't the time to laugh. He needs Norimune to take this seriously because he's worried right now.) Norimune.
It's the rain. One of those bad spells...
no subject
I bet, ever since I saw illusions of those cracks. [As if emulating the derailed, destructive timelines.] Which brings up a very good question, Hizen Tadahiro...
[Okita Souji is take a step forward. From this distance, he can see his smile. It resembles those swords of Okita a lot, in Norimune's mind.]
If his blade cut us, will injured us or not?
no subject
(He's annoyed. There isn't as much bite as there would usually be but he's still snappy all the same,)
If we get cut, we get hurt! Stop being stupid!
no subject
[He laughs, before his smile drops for a more serious expression.]
But I'm assuming he's particularly powerful right now. Be on guard.
[Touken Danshi can typically overpower a regular human. Okita's swordsmanship, however, might let him keep up. Norimune doesn't know if they can outrun him.
If they get away, will Okita disappear? What if he doesn't? Maybe it's better to put him to rest, before others come across him (again). The genius swordsman himself is walking over towards them, never once dropping that friendly smile on his face. But the look in his eyes are focused onto Norimune.
After brief moment, Okita Souji charges right at them with his sword in hand.]
no subject
(But wait? Norimune is really going to fight Okita? He reaches for his sword, holding it tight,)
Wait a minute. You don't gotta--
(Fight Okita. Hizen knows what it's like to face someone important to your story. He knows how difficult and painful it is to be confronted with the story of you and have to cut it down. He wonders how Norimune feels when his story is something of a special circumstance though... no, it still has to be painful and he doesn't want his comrades to feel that. He doesn't want Norimune to feel that again?)
no subject
Well, he seems quite intent on fighting me.
[As usual, Norimune avoids using Okita's name whenever possible. It's easier that way, in an attempt to put some emotional distance between the stories and himself. Yet, watching Okita turns around and face themโface himโwith a smile gives him a tense feeling in his chest. He draws his sword, ready to meet Okita's next attack.]
Watch my back, Hizen.
[Is what he manage to say, before Okita charges in again. And Norimune quickly moves in to block the blow. Kiku-Ichimonji meet Kiku-Ichimonji.]
no subject
Watch yourself--!
(He says while doing exactly what he's told.
While Okita's and Norimune's blades cross, he goes in for a strike while Okita is distracted.)
flips a coin...
"How unusual. Our swords matched!"
[Okita is speaking, and Norimune's expression turn more serious and he sealed his lips. Conversing with this illusion is likely a bad idea, no matter how realistic he looks and acts.
Seemingly sensing Hizen, Okita push himself backward. However, Hizen's sword did graze the front of his uniform. Perhaps deep enough to reach skin? He glances at Hizen, before turning his gaze back onto Norimune.
Norimune is thinking quickly. Either he fully capture Okita's attention, or restrain him in some way... Or simply kill him.]
