SUBSTORY 1: MOON MEDICINE

(It was just mochi. How dangerous could mochi be? There's a reason why mochi is up high on Hizens' list of favorite foods and it's because mochi has never done him wrong.

… Yeah, this definitely isn't his brightest moment and in his defense, he never pretended to be particularly smart.

It's a warm, sunny spring day but Hizen is bundled up in his hoodie and a scarf. No matter what does, he can't fight off this chill and even being out in the sun isn't helping. Desperate, he tries to buy a hot drink from a vending machine if only so he can have something to warm his hands with and






it just takes his money without giving him anything. He tries one more time and gets the exact same result! He can be found sticking his arm up the slot, shaking the machine, or punching it. Sensitive to being watched, he turns his head to see you. Yes, you and snaps, teeth chattering,)

What?! (He's defensive,) Stop looking!

(And please don't perceive the fact that he's literally shaking while he yells at you.)

SUBSTORY 2: VEND ME A DREAM

(They had to retrieve a photograph of a certain host and then bring a hitobashira some takoyaki from a particular vendor that required waiting in an obscenely long line that never seemed to move. After getting the takoyaki, they had to go to a cafe and find a kitsune who was actually a very offended tanuki who asked them if they tried the vending machine alley on the other side of the city. When they get to the alley, they find a strange vending machine in the place that should have had the vending machine they were looking for. It looks like it's been replaced with one that just gives ominous mystery items instead.

His body is small and can only hold so much frustration before he explodes. He lets out a yell when he sees the vending machine,)

Aaaaaaaah! (He kicks at it which makes it beep and flicker,) Where the hell is it?!

(An entire floor full of vending machines and the right one isn't even here.

Maybe you were already with Hizen on his quest. Or maybe you were also led to the hall of vending machines. Or you just heard about this weird place and want to try your luck for unrelated reasons.)

SUBSTORY 4: HANIWHAT?

(He isn't the most sensitive person, even back home when he knows what to look out for. It's easy for most things to slip past him if he isn't paying attention, especially in Jigoku-cho where there are so many things happening, a strange occurrence here and there can be overlooked. But these dolls are strange. He isn't an expert on them but he recognizes them for what they are. They're old; far beyond in his time or knowledge. At first, he hadn't thought much of them but the more he noticed them, the more uncomfortable he became.

These things just feel bad to him. They make him uncomfortable and put him on edge and when he hears that the Enma are calling for them, he's relieved. Good riddance. He has no idea what they're up to but it isn't going to be his problem.

But everyone is so nosy. Everyone wants to push their luck and see what they are. They touch them, they move them around, they treat them roughly, and it just makes him feel anxious. When he sees you checking one out, he snaps,)

Oi. Leave it alone.

(He's clearly irritated,)

You're gonna get in trouble if you keep messing with it.

GENERAL: SHUTEN TERRITORY

(Hizen can be found checking out some of the weapons stores in Shuten territory. He isn't looking for a new weapon— he's perfectly content with his own sword, thank you very much. But when your true form is your sword, weapon maintenance is important. He's shopping for oil, cloth, and other things to take care of himself and he's also asking around to see if anyone can recommend a good smith but no one really wants to give out their source. Instead, they keep trying to sell him a new sword,)

I told ya already, I'm not interested.

(Yeah, but they really don't want to give out their suppliers. It's bad for business, you know?)

I don't give a shit about that. I'm just looking for a guy that can fix things.

(Well, if your sword is broken then might they recommend this one here? It's quite popular with the new recruits—)

I'm not broke!

(Kind of a weird thing to yell but yeah.)

(He thinks she won't think he's very nice if she spends too much time with him but he keeps that to himself. Ah, but the promise of food, in the end, is always enough to get Hizen on board with something. She can tell she's said the right thing by the way he seems to stand a little straighter and he actually looks at her instead of off to the side.)

... Alright.

(He's definitely trying to not look too hopeful or excited. He's just highly food motivated. The drink earlier had gotten him to calm down too, hadn't it...?

She mentions figurines and magazines though and his brows knit together in obvious confusion,)

Ya can't eat those.

(HE IS HIGHLY FOOD MOTIVATED.)

People eat with their eyes, you know. Or in this case, our friend in need eats with their one eyes. On a pair of buttocks.

[So she says, very lightly and catching on that he doesn't get her meaning. That's fine. Even MORE fun for Monts. This is why she walks further down the line of vending machines before stopping in front of one that sells some figurines of the overly cute catgirl maid variety of course.

Monts points to the pair of figurines cheerfully.]

Those seem expensive! Maybe that's what they're looking for?

(Why does he feel like he's missing something. It's not that he's naive; he's just........ not smart sometimes. Things like nuance and innuendo can go over his head very easily. He really needs things spelled out to him in certain moments.

They stop in front of the machine and he looks it over. There is, in fact, a figurine in A5. It's a maid with twin tails and pink hair looking extra innocent with her hand curled like a paw. She has a peach design or something but what gets Hizen is the price--)

Four thousand?! (4,000 yen?!) I have to spend my own money?!

(If they look very closely too... they might see... there seems to be something under her maid skirt too. A piece of paper? A rolled up note?)

4000 yen... Woof.

[Monts mutters this to herself as Hizen bristles over the price. They're of the same mind regarding that at least.

The rolled-up note doesn't escape her notice as she examines the figurine. It feels like this is a lead. Could it be? Sighing, she takes out her wallet.]

This is gonna cost us... I'll have to wear a skimpier dress for tomorrow night to make up for this.

[harimaya]

(It isn't even a good quality model what the heckity heck!!! Ah, but something Mont says stops him, catching him off guard and he looks??? Surprised???)

Wait a second. What d'ya mean you gotta wear a skimpier dress...

(He might not be the brightest sword but he isn't stupid either. He can understand the implication and he's suddenly taking out his own wallet to beat her to the punch. He's shoving his money into the vending machine. Don't look at him.)

This is my job.

(He can do it all himself?! Anyway, the figure comes out with a tumble and he already regrets it. Does he have to keep this stupid figurine now........)

[Monts looks way too happy to explain to Hizen, pausing halfway from pulling out a few bills.]

Oh, that. I work at the hostess club. And you see, Hizen, statistically, the more skin you show, the higher your chance of getting good tips or having customers order the most expensive drinks!

[Since Hizen has paid for the figurine, she gingerly pulls it out to look at the rolled-up note. She passes it to him while studying their anime girl.]

You know, I've seen these before or something akin to it. They sure get pricy, don't they?

Anyways, what's the note say? Our next clue?

(Stop, he's a good, sweet, virgin country boy who just doesn't want to think about these things with people he just met. They just met. Like dang, at least let them have dinner together or something.

It's obvious that he's getting flustered and he just keeps pushing the machine's buttons until the figure comes out.

He takes the note quickly and unravels it. It's... an advertisement! It looks the maid figurine is based off some model and the note promises some hot, sexy, r18 content if they go just around the corner a little bit. It even lists what can be found in the machine and how much everything will cost. It's different magazines!? Truly....... this is not how he wanted his first meeting with someone to go. He mumbles,)

... There's a machine nearby.

(He's filled with dread but this is also... his first clear clue. Every other lead has been roundabout but this note clearly says there are magazines for sale in this machine if they can find it.)

Says it sells magazines. (Just like the Shirime was looking for?) ... I think I got it.

(She... she doesn't have to come with him.)

[Hizen is too sweet, too pure for this world and for Monts' obvious attempts to fluster.

Her eyes are drawn to the advertisement that he unravels. Yup. That sure is some hot, R18 content they're being led towards. But the fact that it's magazines...]
