SUBSTORY 1: MOON MEDICINE
(It was just mochi. How dangerous could mochi be? There's a reason why mochi is up high on Hizens' list of favorite foods and it's because mochi has never done him wrong.
β¦ Yeah, this definitely isn't his brightest moment and in his defense, he never pretended to be particularly smart.
It's a warm, sunny spring day but Hizen is bundled up in his hoodie and a scarf. No matter what does, he can't fight off this chill and even being out in the sun isn't helping. Desperate, he tries to buy a hot drink from a vending machine if only so he can have something to warm his hands with and
it just takes his money without giving him anything. He tries one more time and gets the exact same result! He can be found sticking his arm up the slot, shaking the machine, or punching it. Sensitive to being watched, he turns his head to see you. Yes, you and snaps, teeth chattering,)
What?! (He's defensive,) Stop looking!
(And please don't perceive the fact that he's literally shaking while he yells at you.)
SUBSTORY 2: VEND ME A DREAM
(They had to retrieve a photograph of a certain host and then bring a hitobashira some takoyaki from a particular vendor that required waiting in an obscenely long line that never seemed to move. After getting the takoyaki, they had to go to a cafe and find a kitsune who was actually a very offended tanuki who asked them if they tried the vending machine alley on the other side of the city. When they get to the alley, they find a strange vending machine in the place that should have had the vending machine they were looking for. It looks like it's been replaced with one that just gives ominous mystery items instead.
His body is small and can only hold so much frustration before he explodes. He lets out a yell when he sees the vending machine,)
Aaaaaaaah! (He kicks at it which makes it beep and flicker,) Where the hell is it?!
(An entire floor full of vending machines and the right one isn't even here.
Maybe you were already with Hizen on his quest. Or maybe you were also led to the hall of vending machines. Or you just heard about this weird place and want to try your luck for unrelated reasons.)
SUBSTORY 4: HANIWHAT?
(He isn't the most sensitive person, even back home when he knows what to look out for. It's easy for most things to slip past him if he isn't paying attention, especially in Jigoku-cho where there are so many things happening, a strange occurrence here and there can be overlooked. But these dolls are strange. He isn't an expert on them but he recognizes them for what they are. They're old; far beyond in his time or knowledge. At first, he hadn't thought much of them but the more he noticed them, the more uncomfortable he became.
These things just feel bad to him. They make him uncomfortable and put him on edge and when he hears that the Enma are calling for them, he's relieved. Good riddance. He has no idea what they're up to but it isn't going to be his problem.
But everyone is so nosy. Everyone wants to push their luck and see what they are. They touch them, they move them around, they treat them roughly, and it just makes him feel anxious. When he sees you checking one out, he snaps,)
Oi. Leave it alone.
(He's clearly irritated,)
You're gonna get in trouble if you keep messing with it.
GENERAL: SHUTEN TERRITORY
(Hizen can be found checking out some of the weapons stores in Shuten territory. He isn't looking for a new weaponβ he's perfectly content with his own sword, thank you very much. But when your true form is your sword, weapon maintenance is important. He's shopping for oil, cloth, and other things to take care of himself and he's also asking around to see if anyone can recommend a good smith but no one really wants to give out their source. Instead, they keep trying to sell him a new sword,)
I told ya already, I'm not interested.
(Yeah, but they really don't want to give out their suppliers. It's bad for business, you know?)
I don't give a shit about that. I'm just looking for a guy that can fix things.
(Well, if your sword is broken then might they recommend this one here? It's quite popular with the new recruitsβ)
I'm not broke!
(Kind of a weird thing to yell but yeah.)

[ in the end, there's no real innocent person here, is there? the oni that were agitated and causing trouble and the conniving kitsune that are always ready to make a quick buck. and, to defend their honors, a killer on each side.
jack's smile softens, breathing out an amused huff as they also unsheathe their knives. ]
No offense taken.
[ sensing the incoming battle, the kitsune run back into the safety of the indoors.
and once they sense that they are gone, jack launches themselves forward into an attack, slashing with a knife. ]

Gettin' right to it, huh?!
(He isn't used to fighting against an opponent who uses multiple knives but he's had plenty of practice against the tantou (dagger) spirits. In comparison, Hizen's sword is longer; practically standard length for him considering his own height. His longer reach will definitely be his advantage here. In one motion, he draws his sword and goes for a wide, defensive slash to keep Jack from getting too close. He also moves in to strike.)

[ though not deterred by the fact that hizen holds a much longer range weapon than they do, jack recognizes the fact that they are probably outmatched in both weaponry and skill. though they have their own innate skill written down into their spirit origin, the truth is that the body that they're imitating at the moment simply isn't specialized in close combat. flat may have come up close to enemies in fights, but it was thanks to both sheer luck and ability in magecraft that kept him alive.
and even then--
but, again, jack is not afraid. if anything, they're excited at the prospect of a good fight, and they attempt to parry off the sword slash by blocking with one knife and using the other to slice at any possible opening. ]
It's been a while since I've had prey like you.
[ it's exciting; hunting something stronger than your own self. ]
no subject
He keeps his sword drawn out to keep Jack from getting too close.)
I'm not prey! (He holds his head up high and smiles.) I'm a killer!
(As if stating a simple fact, crouches down low and charges boldly-- almost recklessly-- for Jack. It's an aggressive fighting style, like a fellow hunter going in for the kill. He aims to slash at Jack's side and if he gets hurt in the process...? Well, he's regained his regular strength and endurance. A few cuts are nothing he can't handle.)

and if jack had to guess, then they would admit that their chances of winning are terribly slim. though they manage to dodge most of the slash, part of it does connect, slicing through fabric and skin alike. it doesn't hurt, however. not with the surge of adrenaline flowing through their veins.
but as hizen charges forward, jack does so as well, trying to go around the sword and close the distance between them, aiming a slash straight at hizen's throat. ]
no subject
There's a wild look in his eye when he manages to draw blood but it doesn't last long because the moment he realizes where Jack is aiming, he sticks out his leg to kick the other back. He isn't afraid to fight dirty if it's for the sake of winning. Honor is for the privileged who have never had to worry about fighting just to survive. It's really Jack's fault for picking such a bad target. His neck is his most sensitive spot and he doesn't even let his own allies get close to it.)
What d'ya think you're aiming for?
(And he reaches for his sheath to use as a second, dull blade. He aims for Jack's face.)
no subject
still gripping both knives tightly, they block the attack just mere centimeters from their face. and what's the answer they give hizen as they push the other sword away? ]
For your carotid, of course!
[ well, they're nothing if not honest. but it's not a move that they're going to try again. instead, jack decides to take a more roundabout approach, attempting to stab the other's side. ]
no subject
(Jack that was weird. But also, Hizen is not exactly the most educated sword boy.\
He's going to move to catch that first strike with his sword. It's kind of an awkward angle that keeps him from really being able to move. He's going to have to pull back to really get into a good position. It's a good chance for Jack to get a nice strike in with their other knife if they want but Hizen is just confused? About? Carrots???)
no subject
[ despite the shock that's clear on jack's face, the heroic spirit does not waste time in trying to use that opening to try and slash at hizen's side despite the awkward position that they're both now in.
whether it lands or not, they try to jump back to readjust, but not without having a very necessary quip. ]
Nobody's talking about carrots!
no subject
Taking a step back, he snaps,)
You just were!
no subject
[ christ in heaven, is this really happening right now? the sight of blood is almost maddening, but they can't even enjoy that because this guy thinks that they're talking about vegetables!
they reposition their swords, looking equal amounts puzzled and frustrated. ]
Nobody has been talking about vegetables here. Do you need an anatomy lesson?
no subject
(Because he isn't deaf!! But one minute they're talking about carrots and now they're talking about bodies he's lost track of this entire conversation,)
Stop changing the subject!
no subject
[ what the hell is even going on anymore?! worst of all, weren't they just trying to fight to the near death? just a minute ago?
with frustration beginning to boil over, jack readies themselves again, a spark of insanity in their eye as they jump in the air, throwing a knife aimed at hizen. ]
I'm going to dissect you!
no subject
Jack might notice a cut appear on Hizen's face, bright red and bleeding as if he'd been cut.
Hizen doesn't react very much. There's a moment where he knits his brows together and turns his sword just slightly in the light as if to check something and he focuses his attention back on Jack,)
Annoying.
(It's all he says before he charges again. It looks the same as a previous attack, like it might be wide horizontal slash but at the last minute, he redirects, shifting positions and going for a more precise stabbing motion at his center. Jack might notice, however, there's no real killing intention in the attack itself. Hizen will stop just short of making contact. It's clearly meant to give more of a close warning than a deadly strike.)
