SUBSTORY 1: MOON MEDICINE

(It was just mochi. How dangerous could mochi be? There's a reason why mochi is up high on Hizens' list of favorite foods and it's because mochi has never done him wrong.

… Yeah, this definitely isn't his brightest moment and in his defense, he never pretended to be particularly smart.

It's a warm, sunny spring day but Hizen is bundled up in his hoodie and a scarf. No matter what does, he can't fight off this chill and even being out in the sun isn't helping. Desperate, he tries to buy a hot drink from a vending machine if only so he can have something to warm his hands with and

it just takes his money without giving him anything. He tries one more time and gets the exact same result! He can be found sticking his arm up the slot, shaking the machine, or punching it. Sensitive to being watched, he turns his head to see you. Yes, you and snaps, teeth chattering,)

What?! (He's defensive,) Stop looking!

(And please don't perceive the fact that he's literally shaking while he yells at you.)

SUBSTORY 2: VEND ME A DREAM

(They had to retrieve a photograph of a certain host and then bring a hitobashira some takoyaki from a particular vendor that required waiting in an obscenely long line that never seemed to move. After getting the takoyaki, they had to go to a cafe and find a kitsune who was actually a very offended tanuki who asked them if they tried the vending machine alley on the other side of the city. When they get to the alley, they find a strange vending machine in the place that should have had the vending machine they were looking for. It looks like it's been replaced with one that just gives ominous mystery items instead.

His body is small and can only hold so much frustration before he explodes. He lets out a yell when he sees the vending machine,)

Aaaaaaaah! (He kicks at it which makes it beep and flicker,) Where the hell is it?!

(An entire floor full of vending machines and the right one isn't even here.

Maybe you were already with Hizen on his quest. Or maybe you were also led to the hall of vending machines. Or you just heard about this weird place and want to try your luck for unrelated reasons.)

SUBSTORY 4: HANIWHAT?

(He isn't the most sensitive person, even back home when he knows what to look out for. It's easy for most things to slip past him if he isn't paying attention, especially in Jigoku-cho where there are so many things happening, a strange occurrence here and there can be overlooked. But these dolls are strange. He isn't an expert on them but he recognizes them for what they are. They're old; far beyond in his time or knowledge. At first, he hadn't thought much of them but the more he noticed them, the more uncomfortable he became.

These things just feel bad to him. They make him uncomfortable and put him on edge and when he hears that the Enma are calling for them, he's relieved. Good riddance. He has no idea what they're up to but it isn't going to be his problem.

But everyone is so nosy. Everyone wants to push their luck and see what they are. They touch them, they move them around, they treat them roughly, and it just makes him feel anxious. When he sees you checking one out, he snaps,)

Oi. Leave it alone.

(He's clearly irritated,)

You're gonna get in trouble if you keep messing with it.

GENERAL: SHUTEN TERRITORY

(Hizen can be found checking out some of the weapons stores in Shuten territory. He isn't looking for a new weapon— he's perfectly content with his own sword, thank you very much. But when your true form is your sword, weapon maintenance is important. He's shopping for oil, cloth, and other things to take care of himself and he's also asking around to see if anyone can recommend a good smith but no one really wants to give out their source. Instead, they keep trying to sell him a new sword,)

I told ya already, I'm not interested.

(Yeah, but they really don't want to give out their suppliers. It's bad for business, you know?)

I don't give a shit about that. I'm just looking for a guy that can fix things.

(Well, if your sword is broken then might they recommend this one here? It's quite popular with the new recruits—)

I'm not broke!

(Kind of a weird thing to yell but yeah.)

[Hey, rude Hizen! He has muscle. Cain perked up when he said the word Japanese, though it seems like several people here knew about the Sage's world already. He could tell they are different than the style he was used to already, so he hoped Hizen knew at least one good place.]

I know enough about swords, so I'll be able to tell if they're good or not. Can't really afford much right now though....

Kinda ironic, I got here with all my sword cleaning supplies but not my sword, you know?

(Oh, but now he's said something interesting. Hizen looks him up and down,)

... You're a real swordsman?

(Not just some random loser trying to find an easy weapon?)

[ Rude, Hizen. That's just rude. Anyway, Cain at least wouldn't look offended, just mildly suprised.]

Uh, yeah? I mean, I guess I don't have my sword with me right now so it's hard to tell. But I've been training with one my whole life.

(He is not a polite person.)

(He's quiet for a moment. Those gears in his head are turning and he's rubbing his two brain cells together to think about something........)

Fine. (And he turns on his heel and begins to lead the way,) Follow me.

What's your name?

[Well okay then, he wasn't gonna question it. Hizen was probably just the strong and silent type.]

Name is Cain Knightley. What about you then?

[He was going to walk right next to the shorter guy, and probably closer than what he wanted.]

Man, I am glad to meet someone who knows about swords too. I was starting to think I was the only one!

(Strong and silent is one way to put it...)

Hizen.

(That's it. No other name to go with it. The full name doesn't matter to most people here anyway.)

You aren't that special. (To be the only one like that.) Plenty of guys here know a thing or two.

[That was fine for Cain! Most north wizards didn't remember having a last name, and it wasn't that unusual.]

Well, I don't really think I'm all that special, but I guess I just haven't talked to the right people. A lot of the humans here know about swords, but don't really use them anymore. So I'm happy to meet someone else who knows about it!

"A lot of humans?"

(He catches that. Of course he does. In Jigoku where it's stranger to be human than not, he's gotten good at catching on things. There are plenty of beings here that look human but aren't really (including himself).)

[Reasonably, he knows he should be a little more careful with who he tells that too, but he hated lying and this world didn't seem to have the horrible prejudice against wizards and witches his did.]

Huh? Yeah, I mean...well I'm a wizard and not exactly human where I come from. They also know a lot about these technologies that have never been invested even in West kingdom!

I think I'll stick to a sword, though. What about you? What is it like where you are from?

(Ah, that gets Hizen's attention even more because he's heard of this before,)

... Like Shylock?

(A wizard? He'll answer Cain's question later but right now he just wants to get his information first.)

[That was definitely a name he recognized! Shylock knew how to get around.]

Oh, you know him? Yeah, he's a comrade of mine where I'm from. We're both wizards, along with Murr and Owen if you've met either of them. It's...well, it's a bit complicated where we're from. But it's heartening to see so many people who we can get along with.

What about you?

[No, Hizen, he's not dropping it.]

Mhm.

(He won't really explain how he knows Shylock or any of his thoughts or anything bt he'll at least acknowledge that yes, he knows him. Obviously or else he wouldn't have mentioned him at all. He can't really say he knows Murr or Owen, though? But Hizen also suffers from the antisocial bane that is never learning anyone's names so maybe he does know them but just didn't are to learn their names before.)

... I'm not human. (And neither are wizards, apparently. Even if they look human, too.) You can just call me a spirit.

(And no, he (unfortunately) will not elaborate on this just yet.)

[Unfortunately for Hizen, Cain's expression lit up at the revelation. He figured Hizen probably did not mean like the spirits in his world as they were invisible and as far as he knew, not human-looking, but it was still, regardless, really cool.]

Really? I must admit, I've been glad to meet others like me. Not that I wouldn't like you if you were human! But you know, it's cool sometimes to have others like you.

[He may not be a wizard, but Hizen was Friend in Cain's book. Even if he seemed a little grumpy.]

Say, I know you said you had a sword before, and I did come here with a fair amount of my supplies. I'm not gonna have much in the way of money to pay you if I get a decent sword, so did you need to use my stuff in the meantime? I'd be happy to share.
