SUBSTORY 1: MOON MEDICINE
(It was just mochi. How dangerous could mochi be? There's a reason why mochi is up high on Hizens' list of favorite foods and it's because mochi has never done him wrong.
… Yeah, this definitely isn't his brightest moment and in his defense, he never pretended to be particularly smart.
It's a warm, sunny spring day but Hizen is bundled up in his hoodie and a scarf. No matter what does, he can't fight off this chill and even being out in the sun isn't helping. Desperate, he tries to buy a hot drink from a vending machine if only so he can have something to warm his hands with and
it just takes his money without giving him anything. He tries one more time and gets the exact same result! He can be found sticking his arm up the slot, shaking the machine, or punching it. Sensitive to being watched, he turns his head to see you. Yes, you and snaps, teeth chattering,)
What?! (He's defensive,) Stop looking!
(And please don't perceive the fact that he's literally shaking while he yells at you.)
SUBSTORY 2: VEND ME A DREAM
(They had to retrieve a photograph of a certain host and then bring a hitobashira some takoyaki from a particular vendor that required waiting in an obscenely long line that never seemed to move. After getting the takoyaki, they had to go to a cafe and find a kitsune who was actually a very offended tanuki who asked them if they tried the vending machine alley on the other side of the city. When they get to the alley, they find a strange vending machine in the place that should have had the vending machine they were looking for. It looks like it's been replaced with one that just gives ominous mystery items instead.
His body is small and can only hold so much frustration before he explodes. He lets out a yell when he sees the vending machine,)
Aaaaaaaah! (He kicks at it which makes it beep and flicker,) Where the hell is it?!
(An entire floor full of vending machines and the right one isn't even here.
Maybe you were already with Hizen on his quest. Or maybe you were also led to the hall of vending machines. Or you just heard about this weird place and want to try your luck for unrelated reasons.)
SUBSTORY 4: HANIWHAT?
(He isn't the most sensitive person, even back home when he knows what to look out for. It's easy for most things to slip past him if he isn't paying attention, especially in Jigoku-cho where there are so many things happening, a strange occurrence here and there can be overlooked. But these dolls are strange. He isn't an expert on them but he recognizes them for what they are. They're old; far beyond in his time or knowledge. At first, he hadn't thought much of them but the more he noticed them, the more uncomfortable he became.
These things just feel bad to him. They make him uncomfortable and put him on edge and when he hears that the Enma are calling for them, he's relieved. Good riddance. He has no idea what they're up to but it isn't going to be his problem.
But everyone is so nosy. Everyone wants to push their luck and see what they are. They touch them, they move them around, they treat them roughly, and it just makes him feel anxious. When he sees you checking one out, he snaps,)
Oi. Leave it alone.
(He's clearly irritated,)
You're gonna get in trouble if you keep messing with it.
GENERAL: SHUTEN TERRITORY
(Hizen can be found checking out some of the weapons stores in Shuten territory. He isn't looking for a new weapon— he's perfectly content with his own sword, thank you very much. But when your true form is your sword, weapon maintenance is important. He's shopping for oil, cloth, and other things to take care of himself and he's also asking around to see if anyone can recommend a good smith but no one really wants to give out their source. Instead, they keep trying to sell him a new sword,)
I told ya already, I'm not interested.
(Yeah, but they really don't want to give out their suppliers. It's bad for business, you know?)
I don't give a shit about that. I'm just looking for a guy that can fix things.
(Well, if your sword is broken then might they recommend this one here? It's quite popular with the new recruits—)
I'm not broke!
(Kind of a weird thing to yell but yeah.)

They're just bad! (He snaps. He has never been the most eloquent speaker. He speaks rather poorly but at least he speaks directly, ) If you go messing with 'em, something's gonna happen!
Why are you walking around with so many--
no subject
[ What he deems to be a silly question gets a silly answer; hadn't he already made it known he is aware the Enma Department is seeking these, hadn't he spoken of them being found within his residence? This was the best course of action to take unless he accidentally broke one while they littered his home. Besides, if he didn't get rid of them before his roommate found them then they could become a permanent addition.
The bag is soon shut and he hefts it over his shoulder. ]
But since you're so concerned for my safety then come along with me.
no subject
(Why does he feel like he's being teased? Like hes' being mocked? How dare you acknowledge him with that tone, Xingqiu? )
What? (Wait a second. That isn't what Hizen meant at all. Sure, he might have been worried for him but he had no intention of playing bodyguard or escort for anyone. And yet, it feels like being checked in a game of chess. If he refuses, he feels like it's giving the wrong idea and that these things aren't so bad. If he says yes though...) Where else... are ya going?
no subject
Did you all hear? This gentleman wishes to know where we're going so he can plan the best route for us to travel.
[ A nod before Hizen has his attention once more. ]
Moka and Miruku want to go to Cookie Palace, but Minto says we must go to Wow!Sweets next. After which Azuki wishes to visit Dog Ears and they're all in agreement, after we visit those shops they'll accept being turned over to the department. Shall we then?
no subject
What the heck.
This person is weird. He's decided they're a weirdo. Polite and well-spoken, quirky in this weird sort of way that reminds him of several spirits back home.)
That's not--
(And now he's being addressed directly.)
... Those are all food places? (STOP... Hizen is a simple food motivated spirit. He's successfully been roped in but he isn't going to be happy about it!) Stop yanking my tail. They can't eat.
no subject
Certainly a satisfying result; this is nothing he would so casually partake in back in Liyue. He does have a reputation to maintain but here he is nobody and nobody can easily engage in mischief. So what if he may be deemed strange, or even insane, he was having fun. ]
That's not? Oh, do you have any recommendations?
Or perhaps your own preferences? We can add in a few extra stops.
no subject
(He is not adding any more places to the list?!)
I'm not taking you to all of those places either! (He... he stomps his foot on the ground. He's standing his ground!) Pick one place. We ain't got all day to be carrying around some cursed dolls!
no subject
You won't guide me?
I understand, you're probably a busy man. Very well, I'll pick one place to discard from our journey and we can visit the other two.
[ The mention of the figurines being cursed doesn't even cause him to bat an eye; perhaps he should be surprised. All it does is cause him to want to make a further examination of the clay figures. Another time perhaps for now... he has to make two choices. No, he didn't misunderstand, he is purposely misconstruing Hizen's words. ]
Let's go to Cookie Palace and Dog Ears.
no subject
(He will not guide him around?! He'll just have to run into him at random food and bar locations around the city like everyone else.
He opens his mouth. That's not what he meant but he sees exactly what he did and he know exactly how the argument is going to play out already because he's been in this exact situation before more or less and god, he hates people sometimes so he just
hisses like a cat.)
Fine! (Because in all of his experience, sometimes it's easier to just go along with the thing than it is to resist. Truly, the easiest way would be to stomp off like he's known to do but he really is worried about these haniwa causing trouble. They make him uncomfortable and he can't tell if Xinqiu realizes what he's dealing with or not.) Let's just get this over with.
(And he leads the way by like ten steps before he stops and looks back,)
Well? Where is it?!
(He.... he has no idea.)
no subject
Reaching an agreement means he has acquired assistance; not that it's truly needed but he is curious to see how far any of this will go.
There seems to be some haste, even before he can make a move to lead or follow Hizen has taken an initial step. A step in the wrong direction that is. Xingqiu only smiles and is willing to follow only to further prolong whatever is happening here. So just like Hizen he takes the same number of steps in his wake and only stops as he does. ]
Well, we should actually be heading in the opposite direction.
no subject
(The look on the face when he finds out he was so wrong he was about to go in the complete and total opposite direction. He opens his mouth to yell but instead, bites down on his tongue. He takes a deep breath and tries to calm himself before he reveals too much but... his ears are definitely turning red. He tries again,)
You--
(He sputters and just ends up yelling,)
Then you lead the way if you know where we're going...!
((he doesn't want to be wrong again, okay. its embarrassing.))
no subject
Me?
[ There is a tilt of his head, an almost curious look. ]
Very well, I shall lead the way. Now you were asking before for my name correct?
[ No, no he wasn't and Xingqiu knows that. ]
It would only be correct if you were to introduce yourself first.
no subject
(He wasn't asking for Xingqiu's name but he's already going on. It's not a bad idea to introduce himself? But that means he wants to get to know this guy and... he isn't sure if he wants to.)
Do you always roll over everyone like this?
(He's mumbling to himself but it's definitely loud enough to hear. Is this the kind of person he's dealing with? Someone like Sensei who can get Hizen to go along with all of his crazy plans just because he never gives Hizen a chance to argue back? U)
... Hizen.
no subject
Actually, the truth is, if Hizen has not spoken to him first he would not be in this situation now.
With the man mumbling so close to him and not truly attempting to keep his feelings hidden, Xingqiu heard every word. However, he would pretend otherwise. He doesn't even have to skillfully deviate the conversation from that topic when Hizen himself gave him a reason not to address the words. ]
It's a pleasure meeting you today, Hizen. I am Xingqiu. Let's work together from now on.
[ Before there is any response Xingqiu beckons Hizen to follow him as he leads the way to their first stop. ]
