In the past, phones could only make calls between each other. Voice only! You couldn't text messages or use them to look things up on the internet. Even before that, they had to be connected directly to an actual wire to do anything. Having all those features and being able to send things through the air somehow is what makes smartphones "smart", I guess? Human innovation is really amazing!
