SUBSTORY #1.

My, there's a market for this kind of thing, is there?

[ once the illustrious manager has finished laying her troubles down and introducing their charge — shuten giggles, light, airy, full of new wonder. ancient wisdom and a lifetime of playing rough with humans means she knows blood and pain can make one plenty excited ... but how things have progressed since she was slain.

despite representing the clan that bears her name, shuten is dressed like tamamo staff — if staff were alive in an era a thousand years past and cared nothing for leaving anything to the imagination. she sits in a hot pink, plush velvet chair, fingers under her chin and the ends of her kimono riding the hills of her crossed thighs.

in the dimly lit room, lined with synthetic fur and soft silk, is a variety of tools, toys, a single shy hostess, and the two in charge of shaping her up. idly, shuten thumbs the leather of a muzzle strap atop the side table. she turns to her associate in this, head tilted. ]

Well, go on.

SUBSTORY #2.

[ after resisting the urge to nab and tease her adorable employers, shuten takes the curious little drug into her mouth and swallows it.

or so it seems. the gyokuto nod along, anyway, and instruct her to come back later to report her experiences. once she's out of sight, out of earshot, she lifts one enormous, flowing sleeve to eye-level—

—and slips the tablet from near-ether. magic trick.

if anyone's seen, well — she smiles, fangs flashing. ]

What do you suppose it does?

SUBSTORY #2.

[ when curiosity — or mind-numbing boredom, perhaps — gets the better of her, shuten decides to take the thing anyway, relying only on the safety net of being in shuten territory to catch her when the effects inevitably impair her coordination away.

it happens swiftly, but not unexpectedly, when the dizziness overtakes her and seats her on the side of the road, not far from the apartment she nabbed with ibaraki. ah, perhaps she should have waited to do this company — the more the merrier, no?

a sigh precedes a sudden "oh" as her vision begins to darken. ]

Do folks really like this kind of thing? It's all the fun of wine without the satisfaction of taste...

[ it's lucky her senses are honed to a bestial degree, and the presence of company rings louder than anything. hearing footsteps, shuten rises — and stumbles forward, grasping the one who happened upon her, falling into their welcoming (or unwelcoming) arms. ]

Oops!—

[ she smiles that fang-filled smile — though try as she might, her sharp, purple eyes remain unfocused. ]

... Say, care to direct a girl to the nearest watering hole? It just isn't the same without a drink.

iv. welcome to the night parade
SUBSTORY #4.

[ if it weren't for the promises her dear faction leader brusquely made to her, shuten would probably be all but absent for the setting-up phase of the night parade. as much as she loves liveliness and festivals, she's allergic to labor not asked of her by her beloved danna-han back home.

still, if sake (the best she's had in her entire life) can't motivate her, then nothing will. eventually, shuten can be found in several places: ]

A. [ on the rooftops. atop a towering high-rise, sat on a blinding billboard, further elevated. her perch gives her a view of several blocks worth of parade route and the angle of shady alleyways across the main streets, perfect for spotting any illicit goings-on. should an oni want to report any such thing, anyway.

up here, in the advent of spring, her breath forms thick misty clouds and shuten ... mostly seems thoughtful. the moon is bright despite the cloudy sky's best effort to blanket it.

it's a good thing she brought something to drink. ]

B. [ above the future site of a mask booth. tasked with a box of decorative masks by a moody heikegami, help is supposed to erect a towering banner and place the masks aptly along streetlights and concrete walls.

shuten has taken to wearing one of the masks — a blue-faced oni with golden horns and enormous white tusks, perfectly impressed in plastic and hooked on one of her own horns, far taller than the imitation meant for children. in her hand is a selection of others, which she takes turns holding up to an empty space on an overhang. ]

Mmmmm ... the tengu? No ... The kabuto?

C. [ hassling fellow shuten-clan members she can zero in on — particularly ones who look less than burly. ]

Not that I'm one to talk, but ... you don't look very prepared to be security, do you, dear?

[ following her breezy and admonishing assurances to toraguma, ibaraki's attempt to punish him and her inevitable, ignominious defeat at their former subordinate's blue fists, shuten makes good on her word, and shows up outside the head oni's building.

knowing that berserker stubbornness, and the rage it took to storm her way the full distance down here, shuten figures the girl'd look worse for wear. while she's not happy ibaraki challenged toraguma, shuten still wistfully wishes she could have seen that all go down. the brief conversation she had with their faction leader was enlightening; the two oni, so similar and blind to it, both wear their explosive emotions on their sleeves — ibaraki, her blazing pride and toraguma, his stinging regrets.

whether or not toraguma dealt with ibaraki all the way remains to be seen, but despite what the man had said ...

... ibaraki is not, in fact, his responsibility. not entirely, anyway. so she's here, in search of something that resembles that fiery oni, her charge. ]
