The way it was explained to me is that it's... the knowledge of magical
abilities from those who came before us. The Ancients. When you slot it
into armor, or weapons, you can use it to cast spells. Or have abilities
beyond what you can normally do. So a lightning materia would let you cast
lightning magic. But there are healing materia. Special abilities like
prayers that soothe others' wounds. Even things like being able to call
forth primal deities.
Of course, Materia is all crystallized mako... the same thing that powers
the city, cars... and is all controlled by Shinra. Some Materia occur
naturally in the world... but not much.
[ He sighs. ] And nothing like that here.
Maybe one or two will wash up. A friend from home has one. So it's not out
of the question they'll find their way here... eventually.
