The smaller mechas that are intermittently shown use more of the tactics that would be familiar to Julieta: they fight and move in small group formations, and occasionally some of them transform into more advanced, humanoid forms. On the other hand, there is no coordination between them and the Bird. Interaction between them is entirely them getting out of the Bird’s way, which brings us to our last revelation:
3.The Vermillion Bird’s pilot is not in full control of the machine. Its bouts of erratic behaviour and inability to follow a formation signal this to a fellow pilot, who might identify its actions as a sort of muscle memory or some kind of electrical instinct to kill. With Julieta’s military experience, she would realise the true extent of what she’s looking at: this is likely the fleet’s “secret weapon”, a machine so powerful it has not found a compatible pilot (or pilots), being operated on dangerous margins anyway because it is too powerful not to use.
