The most I've been able to ascertain is facts we already knew from home: They're funerary objects, meant to be in a tomb, not... in a downtown residence. [Or a bus stop, or lined up at the laundromat like they're in a queue, or (one that made him stare when he'd seen it) shoved inside a vending machine coil instead of a soda can, waiting to drop. That one was a mess waiting to happen, even if Minakami wasn't aware how dire.]
